Regents ALSO approve Crisler expansion
I know we have that other thread two posts down, but we have a new tweet from DB:
A great day for U-M BB! Crisler Arena expansion & renovation project also approved by Regents. It will be incredible!
Commence amplified exuberance!

I am anxious to hear the details.
So much work needs to be done to it to bring it up to today's standards. I am really hoping it ends up beautiful and can be an asset instead of a hindrance while recruiting.

I'm all about the renovation part it badly needs it but expansion? I dont think this is Field of Dreams here. If we build it they will come........
January 20th, 2011 at 5:03 PM ^
Probably has little to do with seating and much to do with the concourse and other areas of the arena.
Dollars to donuts says the capacity either remains relatively the same or slightly decreases.
January 20th, 2011 at 5:05 PM ^
Maybe they're redoing the seating to accommodate people that have legs.
January 20th, 2011 at 5:08 PM ^
That's an over represented demographic.
January 20th, 2011 at 5:14 PM ^
I'm 6'5". I was convinced the stadium seating configuration was designed by little people so any expansion that involves taking out seats and adding room I'm all for.

I can't say I enjoyed watching games at Crisler feeling like this:

while making the seats way more comfortable and roomy. Additionally they should lower ticket prices. We never fill er up so make the experience more enjoyable and intimate for those of us who do go.
January 20th, 2011 at 7:28 PM ^
$5 tickets this year a couple of times? If I lived closer, I'd go to every $5 game. What a deal!
January 20th, 2011 at 10:20 PM ^
i bet once its all done and fancy looking, more people would want to go (which would fill er' up.)
January 20th, 2011 at 5:18 PM ^
This is great news. I'd be ok with them reducing capacity, but hopefully this will help put a product on the court that would fill up the arena no matter how many seats there are.
Nicely done DB.

Press Release:
Board of Regents Approve Phase 2 of Crisler Arena Renovations
ANN ARBOR --The University of Michigan Board of Regents today (Jan. 20) approved the second phase of renovations and an expansion of Crisler Arena.
“The renovations will take our classic facility and make it a first-class, modern venue that will be among the best in the country,” said Athletic Director Dave Brandon. “Our goal is to create a home court advantage for our teams while making the fan experience memorable from the moment they walk into the arena.”
The expansion will add approximately 63,000 gross square feet for new fan entrances, additional retail spaces and ticketing areas, as well as a private club space.
The renovation will improve seating for people with disabilities and provide expanded and renovated concourses to allow for an increase in restrooms, concessions and other fan amenities. All seats throughout the arena will be replaced.
Athletic resources and gifts will fund the $52 million project. The construction schedule for the second phase will be presented to the Regents when approval is sought for the schematic design.
TMP Architecture, assisted by Sink Combs Dethlefs, will begin the design work immediately. Those firms designed the new $23.2 million Basketball Player Development Center, which is scheduled to be completed later this year.
In October 2010, the Board of Regents approved the first phase of the Crisler renovation at a cost of $20 million. This first phase addresses the highest priority infrastructure needs such as repair of the roof, electrical, plumbing and air handling systems.
During the last decade, improvements to Crisler Arena have included renovations to the men's and women's locker rooms, new lighting and sound systems, installation of courtside seating and updates to the strength and conditioning areas.
Construction of Crisler Arena was initially completed in 1968.

I just hope the renovation improves the Maize section so that it doesn't feel like you're watching the game inside a closet.
January 20th, 2011 at 6:40 PM ^
I don't mean landscaping outside. And I don't mean more shots from behind the arc.
What Crisler really needs are some big bad boys to be bangin' on the inside with the rest of the big 10. I'm all for upgrades of the arena, but we need to upgrade some playaz!
January 20th, 2011 at 6:48 PM ^
are less than 45k per year, otherwise it might be tough to fill them all.

Goosebumps. As long as they can get the dated/70s feel out of the place I'm All In for RenovationFest 2011.
Now we just need some HD scoreboards at the Big House and Yost...
January 20th, 2011 at 6:53 PM ^
would be nice.
January 20th, 2011 at 7:20 PM ^
Can we get a lightbulb or two in there?
January 20th, 2011 at 7:32 PM ^
have practice facility but it's going as of now. Crisler definitely need a face lift, they're a dump by Michigan standards. There are tons of basketball arenas that I would choose over Crisler.
Once both of it are done, it will help recruiting. That's an understatement. Basketball recruits are more into facilities, uniforms and winning. As of now, Michigan has none.
January 21st, 2011 at 1:37 AM ^
Bring back the Fab 5 uni's with the big bold proud block M. Those belong to Michigan, not Chris Webber. Don't let Webber screw us twice.
January 20th, 2011 at 7:44 PM ^
Don't waste the $100 M or whatever on renovations, just build a new arena next to it in the parking lot. All the money in the world couldn't turn that dump into a home court advantage.
January 20th, 2011 at 10:16 PM ^
Cazzie Russell would like to have a word with you.
January 20th, 2011 at 8:01 PM ^
this will definitely help with recruiting. we have nailed two solid recruits next season, just need to start competing in bigger games and winning them as well. once we can start doing that....good bye little brother.
January 20th, 2011 at 8:34 PM ^
Hopefully they will make it feel less like an auditorium.
January 20th, 2011 at 10:17 PM ^
To keep with the architectural theme of the athletic campus..
