I don't even think he left in a bad way.

No one expected the USC job to open up when it did.

It took him by surprise as much as anyway and so it made it look worse than it was. But in reality, he was just handed a golden opportunity that he didn't expect. It would be like one of us having a scholarship to play for Wisconsin (Division 1 school, successful, etc.) and then at the last moment having our dream school (Michigan) offer us. You'd take it every time, even if it left a few hurt feelings in Wisconsin.

Fact is most fans of any school would support any coach once hired and especially if surrounding himself with coaches/recruiters the way he does. Guy is a spoiled pile of garbage living off of his Dad's name. He has accomplished nothing on his own in life and somehow remains arrogant and lwft with the attitude of a spoiled 14 year old. Make zero mistake, the guy is a good coach as far as knowing football. In fact, I dont even have issue with the way he left Tennessee as I hate Tennessee and Kiffin is a usc guy who considers that job in the same esteem as Hoke does Michigan. However, also make no mistake in giving credit. What he was building at UT and is doing at a sanctioned usc has more to do with who he surrounds himself with than himself. Orgeron is THE best recruiter in the business. Not even close. Might not like his or Kiffin's methods (rampant rumors of cheating in his year at UT) but they get who they want. End of story. Oh, and the DC happens to be his Daddy and only one of the best defensive minds in all of football, regardless of level. That helps when Orgeron and Lane need that extra push on a LB or DT and Monte can pop in some tape of those old Sapp and Brooks Bucs defenses he led. Though, in fairness, I see Hoke the same way (just with ethics). GMatt, Borges and Funk are as much or more to do with our turnaround than Hoke. Popping in Ravens tape helps. Having orchestrated great offenses at everywhere from UCLA to Auburn helps. etc..... That said, generally agree as fans will always rally (I HATE the spread offense but welcomed and supported RR) a new coach. However, Lane Kiffin is a spoiled brat man-child who has accomplished zero on his own. Guy is a grade A douchebag and a liar.

I don't remember fans really giving high profile players who transferred a hard time except for Justin Boren. Considering he trashed the program on his way out to transfer to Ohio, I think he also brought a lot of it on himself.

But I thought the general feeling was people wished Ryan Mallett well even though it left a gaping hole at QB that Michigan paid dearly for in 2008.

RM was gone even if Carr had not retired or we hired a "Michigan Man" instead of RR. It's a poorly kept secret that during his Freshman year (while playing for a hurt Henne) Carr became so sick of him, his threats to leave and attitude that he (allegedly, lol) found him in Schemmy Hall and read him the riot act and handed him transfer papers. This story has been told by many and all accounts have Carr tossing the paper to him and saying "I dont like anything about you. Have that back to me by tonight." before walking away. Kid was gone regardless. MAYBE a Miles or Harbaugh could have kept him but he wanted to go home. Michigan (then) was right for him to prepare for the NFL but was wrong for him in every other way. Coaches thought they could change him, mature him and guide him but we all now know the kid was who he was and nothing was going to change him (at least while in college).

I'm pretty sure neither Miles nor Harbaugh would have kept him. He was a poison to the team. Go back to the Illinois game in 2007 and watch Manningham and Mallett get into it on the sideline. In the same game, watch Carr (his typical hohum self) call Mallett over to talk to him about a turnover he just committed. Mallett rolls his eyes and walks away while Carr is still speaking, prompting Carr to flip out, spin Mallett around, and lay into the kid. It was awesome

This, 100%. Braylon & Perry never had the kind of issues that RM had. Braylon was a "doghouse" case, took it to heart as it helped him grow as a man and he wasn't going anywhere. Perry was just homesick and semi-frustrated with PT. Neither were open drug using, arrogant, pissed off, lazy to learn Freshman. Carr and RM just did not get along because the "doghouse" just didn't matter to Ryan, by all accounts.

Most of them stuck it out, and a number of them went on to do great things. Chris Perry comes to mind. I wouldn't doubt Braylon got  it either with all the time he spent in the doghouse his first THREE years.  Someone being a cocky jackass as a freshman wasn't something only Mallett did.

"Doghouse" and Perry's constant debate over transferring were completely different than RM's situation. Other reply has it right on. I'm not sure even Miles or Harbaugh could have kept him here. Kid wanted out. Kid wanted to go home. Kid acted like a jackass here and at Arkansas but no attack as it is his life and many 18-22 year olds do.

Penn State's rushing game will now be in the hands of a sophomore (converted WR who caught exactly one pass as a receiver) who has taken all of 13 snaps to date, so the offense could be fun in State College. Losing Redd is a pretty significant hit certainly. O'Brien might be able to piece an offense together, but it just became much harder.

In reality, it's like RB grad school. Brighter lights, more glitter, taste of Hollywood/ big market media. And, oh yes, the ladies....

A no brainer.

All the best to the kid. And, PSU is lucky there was not a total exodus. They deserved to be shut down.

As it is, I bet the civil settlements/judgements set them back hundreds of millions. That will leave a mark.

They won't get back to where they were in football for a decade, if ever. And, even that was less than spectacular.

Can't say I blame him. He wants to play for championships, and PSU is a trainwreck right now. He's got a chance to play for a national title, and even had this scandal never happened, PSU is in no shape to play for a title anytime soon.

I can certainly understand if PSU fans are pissed, but even having Redd return would not change the team's fortunes that much.

Evidently he was #2 on the depth chart, but after this week, depth at the skill positions is going to be quite a problem for PSU, and that's only this year. It's going to get worse with graduation attrition, more transfers later, and who knows what will happen over the coming months with recruits.

HB and general depth was usc's only offensive weakness and it wasn't even that severe. With Redd (and health at OL) their team will remind me a lot of our last Henson led team. Both teams basically unstoppable running a general pro style offense but an above average (and scary low depth in usc's case) defense that could keep them from a guaranteed NC game appearance. usc has maybe the best QB in the country, 2 of the top 10 WRs in the country (IMO), a top 10-15 HB in Redd (and a good backup), good OL, TE, etc. Offense will be scary good. However, will their defense pull a NW/Purdue like we did and cost us a NC spot? We'll see. However, even after/with sanctions, adding Redd makes them my P12 favorite.

In addition to Silas Redd, the following players are also tranferring from Penn State:

Rob Bolden (LSU)

Khairi Fortt (California)

Kevin Haplea (FSU)

Jamil Pollard (Rutgers)

Tim Buckley (NC State)

- Penn State's 2010 recruiting class has just been demolished. It was originally a class of 19 commits. Their 3 highest rated players transferred this week and only 11 players are still on the roster from the class.  Should be interesting when Penn State comes back on Michigan's schedule next year as Michigan's 2010 class has had a similar fate--only 15 of the original 27 commits are still left on the roster. Both teams will be extremely young in 2013.
