Redd or Bacon: Someone is seriously mistaken

Submitted by Yo_Blue on

USC is disputing the section of John U Bacon's Fourth and Long book which deals with the USC "recruitment" of Silas Redd when he decided to leave Penn State.  The story in the book mentioned that Redd flew to LA on a private jet and Snoop Dog/Lion (whatever he was named at that point) picked him up at the airport and drove him to campus.

USC claims that Lane Kiffen picked up Redd at the airport after he flew commercial.

Someone's got some splainin' to do and I'm guessing it isn't Bacon (ummm. Bacon).

My prediction? USC will dispute it. Bacon will dispute the dispute. Redd will say nothing. No evidence will be produced by either side, and we'll all forget about it eventually.

but they still think they have plausible deniability that they know what they know. But as soon as they go after something like this and prove that they know, then they'll know that we know what they know even though we knew it all along and what they know should have proven that we know anyway so the fact that they play coy about not knowing what we know they know is just plain stupid.

Thing is, no one is under any obligation to produce any evidence. Both sides can just claim the other is wrong and leave it at that. Somehow I doubt USC wants to get in the business of digging up flight information every time someone accusses them of something.

In the end, it'll be just one more thing for Section1 to make comments about in every Bacon thread.

What are the consequences for USC if they don't? For now, nothing. And after the Bush investigation, USC doesn't appear to be terribly image conscious when it comes to complying with NCAA rules. They are under no obligation to prove anything. It's way easier for them to simply say that Bacon's wrong and leave it at that.

My semi-serious snarky comment sure is turning into a real life discussion. My fun hat has been straightened on my head and has become my serious hat.

My suspicion is that the account Bacon wrote was based on second-hand information, and that the story got "enhanced" bewteen the events and the eventual retelling of them to Bacon.  Both sides could be "right" even if both are not (or, more probably, neither is) accurate.

Michael Mauti and whatever other Nittany Lions Bacon talked to are probably the source for this.

Lord only knows where the PSU players got their version of the story.  I hope for the sake of Bacon's credibility that he has sourced this story beyond them.

the private jet / Snoop story from Redd's Nitany Lion teammates. The question is, does any commercial airline have Silas Redd on the passenger manifest on the days of travel?

The other question is: will the NCAA bother to check into it?

being the third person in this thread referencing Section 1, I would think that you all are actually hoping he does show up and comment. Christ.... he may post controversial opinions but at least it has depth. You guys (generalization not necessarily directed at you) mock someone like Section 1 and then turn around and up vote sophomoric off topic bantar.

especially things that many Michigan fans know off the top of their head, and he puts himself out there as a Michigan football historian, then yes, minor errors in detail should make you wonder what else he got wrong.  It's not like it was just a typo or something.

call doubt to a few small facts to blow up the overall assertion.

Was Bacon's book written from (in this case) Penn State Players' and in 3 and Out Rodriguez's point of view? Yes. Does he take some leaps to get his point across? Yes.

Do I think Bacon fabricated facts or statements? No. Should he have re-watched the games in his book and double checked the facts. Surely.

Do I as a reader have to accept his assertions as what really happened? No. Do I still like Bacon? Yes.

...this did not happen...or Haden would have fired Kiffin. I hate baseless speculation...after all the crap USC has gone through/is going through...something this public did not happen. If it did, Haden would have heads rolling down heritage hall...starting with Kiffin's.

"If sending Snoop Lion to pick up recruits is wrong, then I don't want to be right".  Also, Ole Tex always send a private jet to pick up Johnny Ballgame.

I'm depressed about Darboh in a way that's probably unhealthy -- so I'll ask this question to cheer me up:

Who would you want to pick you up after your  private jet ride for your recruitment trip? I would not choose Snoop Lion. I would choose the ghost of Maurice Sendak.
