Red Wings ink Luke Glendening to an AHL-only contract

 

The Red Wings tend to do this from time to time: via RedWingsFeed, the Grand Rapids Griffins, and, by extension, the Wings, inked outgoing University of Michigan captain Luke Glendening to an AHL-only contract:

The Grand Rapids Griffins on Tuesday signed forward and East Grand Rapids native Luke Glendening to a one-year contract. Glendening becomes the first player from Greater Grand Rapids to ever sign with the club.

This spring, Glendening capped off a successful collegiate career at the University of Michigan by tying a career-high with 21 points (10-11—21) in 41 games and reaching new career bests with 10 goals and a plus-18 rating. He signed an amateur tryout with the Providence Bruins at the conclusion of his senior year, skating in three AHL contests to close out the 2011-12 season.

Other than Abdelkader from Muskegon who else have the Wings had from the West side?

Went to East Kentwood high school......although IIRC he was born in Canada so he's not technically a native

Maybe this means that Luke is the first player to sign with just the Griffins. Luke's is an AHL only contract while Abdelkader would have signed with the Wings to an NHL contract despite the fact that he spent a little time with the Griffins.

Where was Knuble from??  Maybe they mean, signed by the griffins and not signed by the wings and assigned to the minor league affiliate. 

Of course Knuble might have been before the GR affiliation.

I'm sure they mean the first Grand Rapids area player to sign with the Griffins.  The Griffins have only been around for about 15 years.  This is definately the first player from around GR that I can recall playing for the Griffs.

Wow! This is awesome news! Luke is a great, hard-working kid who was a great player at East Grand Rapids, went to a prep school in Connecticut for a year to get better, became a preferred walk-on at Michigan, and went on to become captain. Just a really nice kid from a great family. I was not thinking he would make the pros, however, so this is a great surprise!

Wonderful for the fans of the Griffins to be able to cheer for a hometown guy, and who knows? Hard work can sometimes accomplish great things...
