Red Wings Camp Update

Submitted by Sac Fly on

Quick Wings update today about the upcoming training camp. The MOU was signed yesterday so camp will begin today at Compuware Arena until Wednesday. Practices will open today at Noon and 1:00 and Monday at the same times. Tuesday practice will start at 9:30 with the Red-White game at 6pm.

Helm, Eaves and Datsyuk are out. Mike Knuble has been given a tryout. Filppula is skating again after an MCL sprain in Finland, Carlo Colaiacovo expects to be ready after a shoulder injury. Nyquist and Tatar are staying in Grand Rapids, while Brendan Smith has been recalled.

Nyquist in Grand Rapids is a bit of a head-scratcher for me. Granted, they can call him up at any time, but in my opinion he should be practicing with the Wings. The Red Wings are no longer a Cup-threat and are, for the first time in a long time, at a bit of a rebuilding stage. So why not get your top young star playing at the top-level?

That said, I fully expect him to be called up relatively soon. Feels good to have hockey back!

They can, but it's not the position they are grooming him for, which is exactly why he should (and will) stay in Grand Rapids where he can play exactly that position, in the same role, and with the type of minuted he will play at the NHL level. He can't play a bottom six role, and neither can any of the others you mentioned (aside from Cleary and Tootoo, who he isn't going to replace in the bottom six), who are all under contract, so this is absolutely the right move. For the team and for his development. What do you propose they do with any of the top six forward that he would replace?

If Knuble makes the team he'd remove Holmstrom as the last player to play for the Wings from the 97-98 Cup team. A bit of an asterisk, and kind if strange after all the years, but so it would be.

Can't wait to see him out there. Won't be surprised if he finds himself on the scoring lines. Kid can play, and he's new so let's consider him our big FA pickup. Watch his highlight tapes, tore it up overseas
