Red Wings and Pistons - What Kind of Season Will they Have?
Mates,
Just watched the end of the Wings game, a 5-3 victory vs. the Predators. That's their 3rd straight win to get them to 3-2, after starting the season 0-for-Florida. They didn't do too much in free agancy and seem to be destined to be an 8 seed in the playoffs, just barely able to keep the play off streak alive. Are they better than that?
And for the Pistons, they did sign Drummond again and have most (all?) of their starting five back, and they too finally broke back into the playoffs last year as well.
So the question is this: What are these two teams going to do this season? Mediocre? Marked improvement? Deteriorate and crater? Why?
Hope you are all going to the game tomorrow. Enjoy.

Confident in Pistons due to roster depth and mainly, SVG. Red Wings have looked better last 3 games, but I fail to understand why Blashill changes the lines every game. I think he should let the players have some consistency with their linemates. Also, Mantha NEEDS to be on the team, he has six goals in four games in Grand Rapids and seems to be going to waste there. Bring the kid up.

Van Gundy seems to be doing right things w Pistons. Really young, talented, seem to mesh well. A couple more years, a couple more smart moves - could be great team.
Wings have bigger challenge - replacing Datysuk, close to 20% of cap spent on goalies, no stars. But so much parody in salary capped NHL - who knows. Love that they have given us 25 years of playoffs and great hockey. Ilitch and Holland rule! Hope they can work their magic again.
Live down South - but love my teams from the D!!!

no stars besides larkin. decent goal-tending, but back line is meh. love z, but he is past his prime. vanek doing well early, but the sseaon is young.
and for the pistons, good to read all the positive comments. maybe i'm just too used to them stinking up the joint. not a huge fan, but it is nice when they do well.

The Pistons are on the up-and-up. It was exciting to watch them last year. They are getting into the playoffs again this year. Stan Van Gundy is phenomenal.

are already a good team, and they're only going to get better. However, a big key of the offense is out for about 6 more weeks (Reggie Jackson) so hopes for a fast start are likely unrealistic. This team is really young though and is coached really well, they should be one of the top teams in the East with potential to eventually challenge the Cavs in the coming years.

Pistons will be a top three seed for sure. They may challenge the Cavs for the Eastern Conference. It is going to be tough to challenge the Warriors (assuming no injuries) this year though.

They were an 8-seed last year and got swept. What huge thing happened to make them "top three seed for sure" this off season?
Should they be improved? Absolutely! COULD they be a top 3 seed? I suppose. But it's far from a lock. There's only 1 team in the East that's a lock to be a top 3 seed...sorry, but it ain't Detroit.

do you see anyone threatening your cavs on their way to at least the ECF's? did they lose anyone in the off-season?

Huge Wings fan and I expect very little from them this year .
They have surprised me so far after going 0-2 to start the year . If the goaltending keeps playing the way it is , they will make the playoffs .

I like this emphasis the Wings seem to have on fighting more. Larkin got high-sticked by Yannick Weber, and then Weber came in and tried to bully him around with a cross check. The refs did nothing, so Larkin took care of things.
I was more impressed when I thought it was Shea Weber, before I remembered he was traded to Montreal, but still.

Pistons, I have no idea as I have lost interest in the NBA since every one joins forces and only 4 teams have a chance to win it all.

The Wings find a way into the playoffs. Holland makes a trade for a rental that does nothing.
I am not an NBA fan.

None.
Product way down - just bad.
Haven't watched pistons in 20 years.
Didn't watch a single regular season Wings game last year.
Only have so much free time and they are no longer part of that.

These are the comments I will just never understand. You neither watch nor enjoy either team. The post was asking what we think they'll do this season. Yet here we are.
Don't have enough time to watch them.. but have just enough to read and comment on a thread about them.

This is a great year if you want to attend some Pistons games. The team is getting better and better and is most certainly a playoff team. Couple that with the general 'meh' reaction that the Pistons seem to draw, as has been shown in this thread, and ticket prices will still be low. Good on court product combined with cheap tickets, win win. If they end up a top 4-5 seed and win a series the bandwagon will start to reform and tickets will go back up.

They'll probably both be playoff teams, though I think the Pistons will be the higher seed just because of the relative strength of the East. I could see them be a top-5 seed if someone at the 3 (maybe Stanley Johnson) can add some more scoring to go along with Drummond inside and Jackson at the point (when healthy). I'm actually interested to see how good Chicago and Atlanta look this year; both of those teams are going to be different beasts than last season, and if they stumble the Pistons could fight for the 3 seed behind Cleveland and Boston.
