Red-Shirt Status
so with one game to go, who didn't play?
QB - McCaffrey
RB - Taylor
WR - Martin (Black - played, but likely medical RS)
Tackle - Hudson, Stueber, Honigford
Guard - Filiaga, Hall
DE - Vilain
DT - Irving-Bey, Jeter, Paea
LB - Singleton, Anthony
is that accurate?
even before accounting for 2018 recruits it looks like the defense backfills those leaving pretty handily
time to develop some of those offensive tackles!!!
edit to add Black

Tarik Black is likely to get a medical redshirt, too.

I would play him in the bowl game if he was ready. Probably not staying 5 years.
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:42 PM ^
We’ll see. Hard to predict that.
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:50 PM ^
Yup. Coach and players can obviously have that conversation.
Future looks bright. Good reminder.
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:45 PM ^
not many stay 5 long years... if he is cleared... play him
November 22nd, 2017 at 5:38 PM ^
Don't take away a 1yr option for a meaningless bowl game. 1 game isn't going to determine whether he leaves early.
November 22nd, 2017 at 9:39 PM ^
assuming he is relatively healthy for the full slate of bowl practices. Redshirting gives both Black and the team more options moving forward but I wouldn't begrudge him wanting to get back to full speed ASAP to compete in a bowl game and get in some more development. He's almost certainly not going to be here for 5 years.
November 23rd, 2017 at 4:27 PM ^
Lots of examples. Most pertinent this year being Dymonte Thomas, former 5* recruit.
You don't know whether he'll stay. Why burn that bridge for something of no consequence?
November 23rd, 2017 at 12:27 PM ^
And if he leaves early, as most people seem to expect him to do, then you actually did nothing except bench him for an extra game. Play him. Michigan has recruited WRs well enough to not need to worry about the depth chart four years from now. If you can recruit at that elite level, and you trust your staff with player development, screw redshirts. Play the best kids whenever they are ready.

Stueber played on special teams against Florida. I have no idea what Harbaugh was thinking. Some have suggested that he will get a medical redshirt. Color me skeptical.

Skeptical why? This happens every year. He’s getting his redshirt. Freshmen play in the first few games every year and then we never see them again the rest of the season. All get their redshirts. Not sure what exactly you’re skeptical of, considering every team in the country does this.
November 23rd, 2017 at 4:41 PM ^
About his sanity.
He thinks he's sane. But deep down he knows only insane people forget about medical redshirts.
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:40 PM ^
I thought Filiaga played?
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:41 PM ^
I don’t remember that. When?
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:51 PM ^
Filiaga is a tackle right?
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:53 PM ^
not completely sure where he ends up - seems like weight is more aligned for G
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:57 PM ^
He's played both in practice, but more at OG. He's very top-heavy for an OT and doesn't really fit Frey's prototype.
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:58 PM ^
Okay, fellas, here’s what I found:
I could’ve sworn that I saw him on the field at some point. But the participation reports from every game indicate that he didn’t see the field. I’m good with that, if you guys are.
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:41 PM ^
Your list looks accurate to me
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:42 PM ^
shocked Martin never played.
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:48 PM ^
thought Martin would see the field too...
must be the player didn't live up to the hype. (not yet anyway).
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:52 PM ^
Perry likely has kept him off the field - probably knows the routes better
3 of our 4 freshman WR played
November 22nd, 2017 at 8:08 PM ^
You also have McDoom and Schoenle at that position so there wasn't a desparate need for Martin.
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:54 PM ^
He was hurt for at least part of the year
November 23rd, 2017 at 10:17 AM ^
Reminder that GordonG is a concern troll and not a Michigan fan
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:58 PM ^
He had an injury for a while. And what's the point in burning everyone's redshirts if we can't throw the ball to the wide receivers?
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:53 PM ^
Mgoblue says Stueber played special teams against Florida
November 22nd, 2017 at 3:55 PM ^
If that's it, he can still get a redshirt
November 22nd, 2017 at 6:41 PM ^
Not unless he had a season ending injury.
November 22nd, 2017 at 7:25 PM ^
That's very easy to fake. Ask MSU.
November 22nd, 2017 at 7:57 PM ^
add the steroids to the mix and that's why their 2/3* players seem like 4/5* players.
November 23rd, 2017 at 1:28 AM ^
Yep, they really need to test in college
November 23rd, 2017 at 7:12 AM ^
It's not only cheating other athletes out of potentially winning conference/national honors who don't use, but very unsafe as well for the athletes taking the steroids if not strictly monitored by a Doctor.
November 23rd, 2017 at 12:46 PM ^
“Season ending” injury. In the case of freshmen playing in the first three games, stubbing your toe and not appearing in another game is a justification for redshirt.
November 22nd, 2017 at 4:33 PM ^
but they've made a few errors. That sounds like one.
November 22nd, 2017 at 5:22 PM ^
That is correct. I remember seeing him play and hoping it would be the only time since he was still under sized. He should be able to get it back though.
November 22nd, 2017 at 4:01 PM ^
ny word if these kids have a blue collar attitude?
November 22nd, 2017 at 4:15 PM ^
We gotta lota dogs comin off that redshirt next year.
November 22nd, 2017 at 4:26 PM ^
In my day, dogs were dogs, not dudes.
November 22nd, 2017 at 4:51 PM ^
Haha. Yeah. These guys some dogs, they ain't no puppies.
November 22nd, 2017 at 5:29 PM ^
Yeah dawg
November 22nd, 2017 at 4:34 PM ^
I could have sworn Vilian played. PSU maybe? Or am I mistaking him with Paye?
November 22nd, 2017 at 4:37 PM ^
That was Kwitty Paye
November 22nd, 2017 at 4:54 PM ^
Vilain got hurt early in camp so likely was behind the curve and determined redshirt would be more productive than playing a snap or two.
November 22nd, 2017 at 4:37 PM ^
Wonder if we will try to get a medical redshirt for Nico since he was injured after playing only a couple of games.
November 22nd, 2017 at 5:01 PM ^
How many games doesn't matter if you play in the second half of the season. Oddly, Nico has only played in the second half of the season.
November 22nd, 2017 at 5:21 PM ^
Expecting some of these guys to really start to contribute. Defense will be top tier again and offense will definitely be better! Start the hype train!
GO BLUE!!
November 22nd, 2017 at 6:12 PM ^
Five offensive lineman redshirting. Nice.
November 22nd, 2017 at 6:24 PM ^
We’re going to be so nasty in 2018 and beyond
