Recruits react to Nike

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

This stuff matters. Recruits care and Nike is a powerful tool.

If the rumblings of Michigan getting Air Jordan/Jumpman sponsorship are true, that would basketball recruiting a boost.

Michigan going to Nike yess.

To an extent - yes. Nike has become extremely attractive since they make their shoes extremely limited. If you want a pair of Jordan's or retro runners, you need to get up early to go camp out for them, or fight the bots online for the shoes. everything is extremely desired, and I gotta imagine with a Nike sponsorship, the players will be able to easily get the items that they want.

Yes.

See Oregon, see Boise St., see Pro Combat, see Maryland, etc.

Look at the uniforms for all of the High School camps and All-American Games (The Opening, ESPN, Army AA game)

It matters to these kids, it's NOT the reason you go with Nike...but it's a nice perk if all things are close to equal.

I was a pretty high level keeper in my day.   One thing that I was partial to was adidas Fingersave gloves.  I never found another glove that I liked as much as them.  I could see that being a tipping point if I put myself in their shoes (pun not intended, but left anyway).

I mean, it's nothing new. Nike is the premier sports apparel company in the world and because of that have a solid following. It's the same reason people go to Banana Republic to get nice jeans vs. Walmart.

Say what you will about this whole thing, but I haven't been able to find a good sweatshirt since Nike left. Adidas seems to make things fit tighter and are shorter. I just happen to like the fit of the Nike stuff better.

Banana Republic and Walmart is a bad comparison. It's more like getting excited about getting apparel from Banana Republic instead of J Crew. That is to say, it's a lateral move that only affects people who are interested in aligning themselves with a particular company's branding.

are fucking idiots.  I'm not that damn old and I didn't give a rat's ass about any of that stuff when I was 18.

You pick the school that gives you the best chance to succeed in life.  End of discussion.

All 18 year olds are idiots. Millenials just happen to be the ones who are 18 now. Most of us grow out of it when we get older, so give them time and they'll be replaced by a new generation of idiots who care about some other stupid thing. You were an idiot too, and if it wasn't about athletic apparel it was something else...

Every generation seems more moronic to the previous generation. I'm a millenial and even I notice that people say 5 years younger than me seem much more idiotic than I ever was at that age. It's not actually true since I'm looking at it from a more mature point of view. It's probably the same, if not even more so, for you.

Older people are by definition smarter than young people because they have experienced more life, developed common sense, wisdom, perspective, etc about things which seem obvious from an older persons perspective but require experience to "be smart about".  There was a point in your life before which you didn't know what "smoking" a food meant as well. You weren't born pre-programmed with that tidbit of knowledge nor with an intellect that was able to organically comprehend it a priori. You learned it somewhere along the way.  Don't make the mistake of assuming an entire generation comprised of millions people are innately more idiotic than another entire generation of people because of a few instances of life experience differential. If anything young generations are increasingly smarter because they are born with resources, learning opportunities and technological advantages that didn't exist when you were younger, in addition to a wider canon of human knowledge.

it depends on whether the salmon's been hot smoked (i.e., brought up to temperature during the smoking process) or just cured and cold smoked. in the second case, the fish is never "cooked" in a biochemical sense. most scottish smoked salmon is of the latter variety...it's similar to gravlax (which is also cured and never cooked), but some smoke is applied.

now, i don't know if i'd use the word "raw" to describe cold-smoked salmon. but depending on the fish, you don't necessarily have to cook it when you apply smoke.

i'll go back to lurking on your excellent site now...just can't resist a good smoking/curing discussion.

+1 to you sir,  my head was going to explode if no one had corrected him on that.  Few things are more annoying than people calling people stupid while being wrong themselves.

Take a bite of cold smoked lox, then take a bite each of salmon sashimi (raw) and a bite of a grilled/broiled/steamed/pan-seared/whatever your preferred method of cooking salmon is.  One of these things is not like the others.

Stupid people are stupid and age does not matter. 20 year olds now are not dumber than 20 year olds in 2000 or 20 year olds in 1980 or whenver. I've encountered college graduates that can't locate Germany on a map, I've worked with kind of decent salespeople that can't figure out a 10% discount without a calculator. I've met elderly people who are 1000% convinced Obama is a secret terrorist raised by ISIS to destroy America from within (no politics but whatever). I especially get annoyed hearing older people that bankrupted our fucking country and can't spell nor understand inflation bitch about idiot teenagers.

Honestly, most of the people I've known or met that believe absolutely stupid as hell, "how can you be this moronic" type things are over 40. As a college grad millennial I feel my generation on average ranks lower on the ignorant scale than the one before it. But that doesn't matter, stupid is stupid at all ages - and pretending a generation is 'dumber' than the previous one because you don't understand it well is especially freaking stupid.

I'll just quote Wikipedia.

Most smoked salmon is cold smoked, typically at 37 °C (99 °F). The cold smoking does not cook the fish, resulting in a delicate texture. Although some smoke houses go for a deliberately 'oaky' style with prolonged exposure to smoke from oak chips, industrial production favours less exposure to smoke and a blander style, using cheaper woods.
