Floyd Raven though he hasn't scheduled a visit yet. Maybe Pat Flavin, as well.
landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
Floyd Raven though he hasn't scheduled a visit yet. Maybe Pat Flavin, as well.
Flavin hasn't been offered though has he?
Probably might be telling after Hoke's in-house with Fisher.
Hopefully that's the case.
Do you know when this will happen?
Your screen name makes me laugh every time I see it, AND it pretty much sums up the state of our recruiting right now.
Put me in the "still hokeful" group though.
The coaches are to visit Frost so we still have a shot in the dark, especially since at one moment he was a lock to be Blue. I think if coaches tell him he can try WR he'll think about switching to Michigan. He told me via facebook message "Michigan still has shot"
also, since you have like 12 points, screenshot?
= no credibility around here?
is in personal contact with one of our top prospects? Dude, where in the hell have YOU been when we needed you? Seriously, is this for real?
Oh, and welcome aboard.
He's a huge possibility that nobody seems to be taking about in any other thread today. With his offer sheet I'd expect him to at least be somewhere in the scout 300
Everyone should be talking about him. He announces on the 23rd.
Do u think we still have a shot at Flowers? Seems like everyone we thought was a lock has gone elsewhere
Yes, I talked to him two nights ago, and nothing has changed with him.
for everytime I heard that, I would have many dollars. Hope you're correct
but I'm already sick of the hope/hoke thing especially from our own fan base.
I know I know I better get used to it.
[Edit: congratulations!!! You look happy.]
barely scratched the surface
Not necessarily. This class was never going to be more than about twenty players. If Hoke gets 15-17 guys, we'll be alright.
Like you said, though, we need really good classes in 2012 and 2013. There's a lot of good talent in Michigan in the 2012 class. Hoke said recruiting starts in Michigan, so we'll find out quickly how much he meant it.
Good shot at >15 players + tons of freshman/sophomores + bumper crop in 2012 class = very OK.
The WR Flowers is considering us.
Cool thanks for the info.
Yes, but it would appear that the coaching staff is focused, and rightly so, on the D. We are pretty deep at WR which is why Hoke tried to get Lucien to switch to DB. Not to metion Flowers is only a 3* recruit. So not a big loss is he goes elsewhere.
Being Coach Hoke just accepted the job last week. DB put him in a tough spot, but Coach Hoke and limited staff have done a pretty good job. It could certainly be a'lot worse.
On paper it won't have anything to do with the current recruiting class, but Coach Hoke keeping Denard on board was huge.
Very true...keeping Denard was EXTREMELY important but..........
1) Tate sounds like he's gone (though not of his choosing).
2) I haven't heard a peep about whether Devin Gardner is staying or going beyond those tweets the day Hoke was announced saying "I'm Gone" and questionable commentary as to what he was talking about. Even if he stays, we're down to two QBs.
Gardner is staying. His remarks regarding Hoke show support for the team and university.
I havent heard a word, from anyone, that Devin would leave. If anything, I think the pro-style fits him better.
With that bad back I don't think Devin should think about moving at all. He's in traction. SPINAL!!!
Last week Tate's dad was trying to get him re-enrolled. While DR is the QB, it would be great to have Tatre as a back-up. What is the status?
One of the sites indicated he's why we said no on Lucien.
Recruiting is an up and down phenomenon. Look at Miami. 2 weeks ago they were at the bottom and now they are beginning to clean up (at our expense perhaps).
We still have 2 weeks left with 2 big visit weekends left. Here are some things to consider:
- We find new names popping up every day with regards to Hoke's recruiting
- Last year, guys like Black came out of nowhere late in the process. It happens every year.
- There are some players who love Michigan but weren't a fan of the spread (Ray Hamilton). We might have a chance at these guys now.
I'd say this morning was the absolute nadir of our coaching U curve. It's coming back up. We'll get 15 commitments for a team that is only losing maybe 10 contributors. So this class wasn't supposed to be that huge anyway. It's 2012 where we will make our huge impact.
Stay the course, people. Stay the course.
Even if we close pretty well, there's almost no chance we finish with a top 25 class, and one class really can screw you (the epic fail that was the Mallett/Donovan Warren class caused major problems when those guys were supposed to be seniors).
It's not fatal or anything, but this is something that they'll have to find a way to dig out of.
Nonsense -- RichRod and his incompetent staff just failed to "coach up" those players.
- Lloyd Loyalist
Never understood that...a 25 player class with an average 3.5 star rating finishes higher than a 15 player class with a 3.8 average, regardless of team needs..
No - this makes perfect sense. Using your example - let's say there are two classes - Class A has 10 four stars and 5 three stars. Class B has those same 15 guys, plus has 3 more four stars and 7 more three stars.
Class A has a 3.66 star average, and Class B is 3.52. The first 15 on both teams have presumably the same probability of being good players. However the 10 extra players in Class B have some probability of being good as well, and those empty slots in Class A have zero chance.
I needed that.
I don't think that does appropriate justice to our situation. FUBAR might be a bit better. Really, I think jhackney needs to pull out his nuke again. That'll truly demonstrate our situation.
Im riding in your guys' boat. I like the hire .. but DB screwed Hoke by waiting so long ...
I keep hearing this comment over and over about how DB's waiting screwed our recruting. It's not surprising since the media is perpetuating it. Is our recruiting screwed right now? Absolutely. But this isn't something that we can lay at the feet of DB. It's not his fault. It just is what it is. What many fail to see is that in order for DB to interview JH and LM and BH, coaches under current contracts with major Universities, he would need to get permission to speak with those coaches. Doing this in December means that he would need to get that approval from the AD's/President's, while those coaches are preparing for bowl games to represent their respective Universities on a national platform. Who, in their right mind would give that permission to DB at that time of the year? You have to wait until January in order to have a legitimate chance to interview those candidates.
I'm pretty sure DB never asked for permission top speak to Hoke...
If there was ever a year that we could theoretically survive a bad recruiting class, this is likely it. The class above it, partially through redshirts, is pretty darn large and we don't really NEED many of these guys to go right into service save a kicker and maybe one or two d-backs since we have so many starters returning.
That said, yes, we'll need a strong 2012 class after the six kids from last years class that didn't qualify and the smaller class this year.
If he could close with Bryant, a kicker of some form and either McClure or Taylor and one other defensive player of some note we're at 15 and thats not death.
I beg to differ. We are comfortably lodged between a rock and a hard place.
^^ What he said.
IDK about you but that's deffinetly not where I am
We are good and screwed with recruiting this year, thanks to DB's handling of the whole coaching change.
Can we save it over the next 13 days? Maybe, but it ain't going to be easy. Of course Hoke could help himself out a bit if he would hire the rest of his staff already.
This will be appearing on the Red Cedar Message Board, the Buckeye Battle Cry, Eleven Warriors, the Black Shoe Diaries and on about 11,637 other websites in the next 60 seconds.
TIFWIW just read Rawls will be on his Official Visit to AA the 28th
I think there's no question we want him (now that D. Hart's spot is open) and it seems like he wants us (no doubt in part to the fact that Fred Jackson's other son is his coach) but I heard the last hurdle was his ACT score. Perhaps we accept his commitment since it doesn't look like we'll be in the situation where we'll run short on scholarships and if he doesn't get eligible, oh well.
As part of their scathing investigation into the questionable character and qualifications of Brady Hoke's Michigan recruits.
You haven't noticed how, with the exception of that jerkoff Drew Sharp, the Free Press has for the most part changed its tone towards Michigan since RR left.
In fact, I expect no such treatment of Rawls.
What I wrote was in the profoundest spirit of sarcasm. Why would a Free Press reporter go after a kid from Michigan, who might enroll at The University of Michigan, as one of Brady Hoke's Wolverines? 'Tis unthinkable. I may end up helping Mitch Albom write his inevitable human interest story on how the yongster rose up from his humble origins. If Mitch is too busy, I'll help Drew Sharp work on the story of how Rawls overcame the racist oppression of standardized testing.
For your part, JBA, you've got it exactly right about the Freep.
As I am sure this is sarcasm, I don't want to say it but isn't that exactly what happened to Dorsey, I'm sticking to my guns and saying fuck the Freep
That was his point, actually.
but he has to qualify first. It's all we've been hearing for months now and still hasn't happened. When is the last test he can take and still make it through the clearinghouse?
Am I the only one that laughs every time I see the abbreviation TIFWIW? It's so long...
We have pretty decent depth at RB so not sure we need another one, a 3* one at that. I'd rahter see some more OL/DL recruits and LB help.
if we can keep our current commits, and gain a few more i think Hoke deserves a lot of credit. he was thrust into an odd situation but has done a decent job of keeping it intact. but i will say it isn't helping him by not having a d-coordinator in place. speaking of which is there anything new on the DC position?
We have already lost commits
He's already lost goudis, crawford, frost, lucien, and fisher.kinard and Greer have now committed elsewhere, jones and others are looking around.Sign a DC and lock down some F' recruits.Hoke deserves credit for nothing as of right now, as he's nothing absolutely nothing to this point.
Kris Frost today. I would say this picture is accurate.
It's unfortunate that Kris decided to sign with Auburn. I just watched the Outside the Lines special on college over-signing (especially the SEC), so I hope it doesn't happen to him.
If you guys haven't seen it you should check it out.
This video makes me even more happy we have Hoke instead of Miles. I just can't imagine a Michigan Man doing a kid like that. VERY shady!
What's it going to take for the NCAA to fix this?
This is fucking ridiculous. Excuse my language, but the coaches that CONSISTENTLY and REPEATEDLY do this are a FUCKING DISGRACE to collegiate athletics.
I've known about this. I've read about this. I haven't seen this piece before, and you just have to wonder what more is it going to take to make this stop.
Houston Nutt signs 37 kids and jokes about it in a press conference that he could take 80 if he wanted?!?!?!? Holy fuck, I am absolutely baffled.
I saw some time ago that we could fill as many as 20 spots. Does anybody know the exact number of scholarships we have to offer in this class. Do you think we will fill it out? Would it be better to have a bigger class next year with potentially higher ranked recruits?
Mike Williams is likely to get a medical scholly so we are looking at 22-23 open spots. That is what makes the Lucien situation seem so stupid to me because we have plenty of spots open.
Say we only sign 15 or 16 in this recruiting class which seems likely if not probable. how many schollies does that leave us with in 2012. The way I was looking at it, it was going to be a bigger class already now add the 6-7 left over schollies. Next year Michigan signs 27?
One thing I learned, it ain't how many you sign, it's how many you get in.
Back in the day you played 10-11 games and had 105 schollies. Nowadays you play 13-14 games and have 85 schollies. Seems like bad math to me and a recipe for getting position groups devastated by injury.
Yeah, next year is supposed to be a huge year in Ohio recruit wise, so I'm thinking there's gonna be an artificial bump in UM's recruiting rank next year partially because I imagine seeing a big class coming in, and quantity counts more than I at least thought when it comes to team rankings.
I'm pretty sure the big ten only allows schools to sign 25 guys/year. However, I think early enrollees count towards the previous years class. So if UM did sign 27 they would need a couple of those guys to enroll early.
Next year i'm looking for Quantity as well as Quality! //after this class, at least looking at quantity, Next years depth chart is going to have to look like a naked swim suit model to potential recruits.
I'd rather take the 15 or so -- best players we can.
Then roll the extra number over for next year, and bring in a huge/great class. Does anyone know the rules on this?
I believe it's 25 with a max total of 85? SEC will offer more than 25 before trimming it down to 25. Somebody may correct me on that.
I wish we could get a breakdown from Brian or TomVH.
Somene said you can get around that, mostly with EE.
I am not sure, which is why I asked.
Or you could just be in the SEC and take 30+ players. You can always figure it out later by cutting/grey shirting guys or putting them on medical hardships.
We'd probably max out at 25. I'm pretty sure that's the number of scholarships you can give out in a year.
edit: too slow
EEs can count toward the previous class - if you have space. It may be limited to a total of 3 - but thyat can get you to 28
I'm not so sure about that. I mean Lucien looks like a quality recruit but he never received any offers from Pac10 schools including USC, UCLA or CAL in his home state. Makes one wonder. Plus we have pretty good depth at WR. Where we need help is on the defensive sie of the ball. Which is why I suspect BH asked him to switch to DB.
Well, Rivals lists that he does have a UCLA and Cal offer, but he did not get offers from USC, Stanford, Oregon, Washington or Arizona - every Pac Ten team with a winning record this year.
LET'S ALL PANIC FOR A CHANGE!
the inescapable gravitational field of this:
If we get too close, it'll be a long ride down and out the other side...
that fancy little gloryhole you have pictured there?
It's his 9-5, Making the world a better place one glory hole at a time.
but WTF is that? Anal space?
I lived in the same town as this guy* for two years:
The trick is to anticipate the gravitational pull and keep a safe distance.
*Miss you, big guy.
We will be ok. We will have 27 juniors on are team next year followed by and 47 kids who can be sophmores next year or RS freshman, if Gardner and some other players get the medical RS then that will be like them being in this class. In the end I believe one not so good class will be ok aslong as we come back strong next year in recruiting.
are teem our guna be gud. maibee
(and I hate to agree with Mike Valenti)
but, Michigan is going to have a hard time competing for elite recruits no matter who the head coach is, and that is because they refuse to "get their hands dirty".
I am in no way saying Michigan should start breaking the rules or "get around them" like other schools (SEC) , but reality is that schools who do those things land the elite recruits.
Valenti mentioned this on the show a bunch last week. If you look at the past few NC contenders, they all run dirty programs or have a major booster than no one can compete with (Oregon)
Michigan refuses to stoop to those levels (which is a good thing) and as a result, miss out on the elite recruits.
It is alarming, though, that right now UM seems to be missing out on any recruit of note.
Michigan never pulled in class worse than 16th to Rivals, and was in the top 10 like 4 times, despite generally signing smaller classes than SEC schools (which is a big factor in how they rank teams).
This isn't basketball recruiting. We compete for elite talent just fine.
Your point is valid.
I must have been focusing on the fact that our recent elite "talent" has left or not developed lately.
Hopefully we're on the turnaround and experience will help.
We also lost a lot of that elite talent that we had in those classes ie Mallet, McGuffie, Demar Dorsey, Anthony LaLota (4 star), Vlad Emilien (4 star), Justin Turner, Boubacar, Brandon Smith. Not that this is anything new, but a lot of the top talen we have recruiter, didnt stay very long.
This. God we've lost so much talent the last few years that should have put us in a better position.
Postive attitude! Let's go!
That isn't true at all. Michigan got top classes in the past. Notre Dame gets top classes regularly and they're about as clean recruiting wise as you can get.
the biggest needs in this class left are K (Matt Willie), DB (McClure), and DT....I saw on Rivals that Timmy Jernigan still has us in his "top" category, if not hopefully hoke can pull one of his former San Diego State targets
I really think that if Hoke had been hired earlier, we'd have had a chance at Jernigan. As he's said during the process, he doesn't want to be double teamed at NG, and Hoke could have (possibly still can) tell him if he comes in, his talent could very well put UM (if they aren't already) in a position to run a 4 man front, that's how good he can be, etc.
YOu made quite the comeback from Bolivia. Congrats!
Why didn't DB just fire RR AFTER national signing day?
so everybody in his recruiting class could transfer and then leave us completely screwed? this seems like the least logical option ever...
If Hoke says recruiting starts in Michigan than he is a fool. We are so close to Ohio and and Indiana and Wisconsin. There are plenty of recruits that will go to the OSU/Indiana/WI staff if they have the talent. That's the initial problem, our weak recruiting program or our lack of looking outside our own backyard. No disrespect to Michigan highschools, but man we gotta set our sights higher and farther and look outside of the box/state!
Good thing we didnt recruit Florida to find a QB made of dilithium named Denard.................
Or the fact that 3 out of 4 of our current players are from out of state, mostly florida, cali, and ohio
Has been on the rise as of late. I dont have it anymore, but the Maple Street Press' preseason review of Michigan had an excellent article in it about the return to recruiting in the midwest, especially in Ohio under the last few coaches. Had excellent points about how as the quantity of recruits from MI and OH tailed off so did the overall success of the team. This would have a lot more merit if I had a link to paste to it so if anyone wants to call BS go right ahead, I have nothing to back this claim up with!
If we are thinking of the same article it more specfiically referenced recruiting Ohio and tied it to the programs fortunes.
Then again, Dantonio made MSU relevant based almost entirely on in-state recruiting (and ignoring legal problems...but that's another post).
lol I live in Indiana. There's no where near the talent here as there is in Michigan. Maybe if you want a basketball team but not football.
I live in WI and i can verify that MI has way more football and basketball recruits than here.
We have some solid kids, sure, but nothink like MI and tsbm(that state below michigan)
And add a couple of guys like Stefan McClure...
Hoke can still salvage an average class, I think.
I agree secure the soft verbals and bring in flowers, mcclure and a DT and while this class won't be the best in Michigan history, at least it contains talent that wants to be at Michigan. I think Rawls would be a good addition also.
Does anyone know about Antonio Poole, 4* OLB from Cincinnati, he hasn't received an offer from Mich according to scout, but just wondering if we've extended an offer or if there's any info on him
Shouldn't we at least look around for a qb in this class too? Assuming Tate won't be back all we have is denard and devin...and Kennedy but I'm not counting that.
Well, at least we don't have a bunch of transfers like the last time around....
(as someone who's wearing a "The Dude Abides" T-shirt today, +1)
Not a lot of time, but Brady Hoke should be able to send quite a few new offers out, do some key in-home visits, and finish strong.
I doubt Michigan will get to 19-20 commits this year, which sucks since Michigan football recruiting has been in a perpetual state of "reconstruction" since the infamous "No. 2 ranked! 2005 recruiting class that later evaporated into the stratosphere.
Hoke is probably a decent recruiter in terms of building relationships over the longer term, but he *!news flash!* lacks the big name and celebrity-like star power to attract in a top 20 class in just 15 business days. Next year should be better.
I think it's wise to adjust expectations for February 2's recruiting haul. And while you're at it, think 7-5 for 2011. Seriously.
You may be right, but I am holding out for 8-4 because the conference is losing a lot of good seniors, the team will be older, and Denard is staying. And because I don't want to be "that guy" who complains because he doesn't see the sense of firing a 7-5 coach to get another guy to go 7-5.
I'm that guy.
Why make a coaching change and foobar the recruiting class if our expectations for next year are 7-5? Ugh!
I wasn't expecting 7-5 before the coaching change.
...on the news paper preview I think we'll win at least 8 games (MSU's is *primed* for a come to earth moment with at least 3 defensive starters graduating and I think at least 1-2 OL graduating).
Wherever we are, there is no "there" there.
But there is always hope, or Hoke, if you prefer.
Well, most of us think we're basically here:
...but a few people still insist that
...so I guess for now we need to
Is the last one supposed to be:
your heroine or your heroin?
How does the addition of Greg Mattison impact our recruiting? Seems like we have a few highly ranked defensive recruits that still show some interest in Michigan (i.e. Curtis Grant, Mickey Johnson, Tim Jernigan)
Do we have a shot at landing any of them?
