Recruiting Updates

Hey fellas..a lil disappointed/surprised with Steve Elmer's commitment. But don't fret, we have plenty of other options for the 2013 class. And we currently have the best o-line class in the country with the possibility to add either Banner, Diamond, or Garnett. The depth in 2012 class might scare some prospects away, maybe a factor with Elmer. I think we need to address the center position in 2013, especially because Christian Pace is no longer with the program. Two other options at OT for 2013 are Bosch and Pocic both hailing from Illinois, which I mentioned in a previous update.

2012
PA RB Greg Garmon- We're in his top four right now. This consists of OSU, TAMU, Iowa, and UM. TAMU already has Trey Williams (beast) in their class and are pursuing a community college prospect. OSU is stacked at RB, including two blue chippers in this class. I think it is a battle between us and Iowa. We need to get him back on campus, anyone aware of his visit plans?

IA WR Amara Darboh- A lot of us panicked when he didn't visit for the ND game, but he will take an official here. Either on Nov. 19 or 26, per our boy TOMVH.

NJ CB Yuri Wright- Here is a Detriot News article (good read) by Sam Webb. He speaks pretty highly of michigan. He is not orginally from New Jersey and says he reps New York. Him playing with his teammates at RU will not be a deciding factor. Playing early will be a factor for him and I think he will have a good chance of that at michigan. He is also pretty high on MSU and may visit east lansing oct. 15 for the um vs msu game. His suitors at this point : us, UGA, Cal, RU, MSU. I think RU leads just because he has been on campus so many times...hasn't finalized any officials but he may be in town for either SDSU or Minny.

EDIT: according to fellow Mgobloger BGG34, michigan has the edge right now. Man if we land him.... cheeky

2012 DT commit Ondre Pipkins has been dominate so far, recording 15 tackles, 4tfl, 1 sack this week. His stock is on the rise, no doubt a top 10 tackle.

Pretty much what has gone down the last week...let us know what else you are hearing? Any predictions on how this class pans out?

Wouldn't be surprised if Caleb Stacey ended up playing center, with all of our other o-line commits in this class.  He seems a little smaller than the other guys and like a really bright kid who could take on the role of center quite well.

Stacey seems to be a versatile kid, whose stock is on the rise. I think he ends up at C, Kalis at RT, Magnuson at LT, and Bars at G. I'm not sure where Braden will end up, probably also at tackle, but it also depends on how we round out the class.

Braden's stock has been on the rise too, and he sounds like he could be the best of the 2012  commits at LT.  And I think the thought on Kalis is he would be a better guard than tackle.  But depending on Garnett, Banner, or Diamond, those positions could shift.

There's a lot to be excited about with Hoke's O-line recruiting thus far. A line with Braden/Magnuson/Banner (my favorite left if I had to pick one) as the tackles, Kalis/Bars/Bryant as the guards, and Stacey/Miller at C would be a pretty good unit in a few years. Unfortunately these guys will probably be forced into action earlier than usual for Michigan linemen.

I hope Caleb Stacey ends up as our Center. He's a smallish recruit and to the extend he doesn't take up one of the Guard slots on the roster it opens  up the possibilities for higher rated recruits who may be considering Michigan. Banner / Diamond would only have Braden / Bars / Bryant / Magnusson and Kalis to contend with for future playing time. I was very dissapointed to see Elmer shy away from playing at the greatest university in the United States...

I wish people would give this kid a chance. Yeah, he wasn't highly rated by the recruiting services, but hes a very smart kid, plays hard, and will have a year on any current commit. He also has a story behind his family that makes you pull for a guy like him. If I had to put money on our starting center for the 2013 season, it would be on Miller, nothing against Stacey.

FWIW Pipkins is playing against strong competition so those numbers he has are against some of the better OL's in the country. A big game to see just how good he is, is Oct 7. He is going to be going against Evan Boehm who is one of the best guards in the country.
