Recruiting Update from Sam Webb (including Marshall info)

Submitted by AnthonyThomas on

This is a pretty long and luckily free update from Webb that includes info about Will Lockett and Reagan Williams (two 2015 recruits that are visiting this weekend), 2015 QB recruiting, and how UM helped themselves with Donnie Corley, who is a 2016 WR from Detroit.

The most interesting bit was about Iman Marshall. Scout's main west coast analyst, Greg Biggins, talks at the end of the article about how the visit went as well as anyone could imagine and that the staff were adament about selling UM as a place where Marshall could earn early playing time and as a place that would get him ready for the NFL. Marshall is really close with his dad, which is one of the main reasons why USC has been and still is the favorite to land him, but if any school is going to pull him away from LA, Biggins thinks it would be Michigan (Biggins notes that Marshall seemed a lot more excited about Michigan than Florida State. Marshall visited FSU over the weekend).

I thought another interesting point the staff made to Marshall is that his physical style will play in the Big Ten much better than in the Pac-12. Officials let a lot more contact go here than on the west coast. Marshall is really physical for a corner, and he doesn't have the natural speed to be a hands-off type of defender, so maybe that will help. More than anything, I thought the Biggins quotes were an interesting insight into what the staff will focus on when recruits visit.

edit: Lorenz is reporting that Harbaugh will have an in-home visit with Marshall on Monday. Scheduling an in-home right after the campus visit makes me think the young man is serious about Michigan.

I'd love to get Marshall, but it's not as if he has some unique connection to Michigan that future recruits will lack. The fact that a kid from California is this interested in the program, and is this sold on the staff, who have been working for less than a month, bodes extremely well for the future. I'm sure FSU sold him on the same things Michigan did, yet UM appears to have won that battle. That's exciting to me, regardless of where Marshall ultimately signs.

I think you read it wrong. His father made the assertion about his style of play. The reporter wrote that his dad was watching an SEC game and then a PAC12 game and noticed the difference in officiating

Clark obviously is enjoying milking the process (which is fine, idc), so I don't think we should read into the things he says about other programs. Michigan is obviously the best fit for his future. I think for that reason he ends up here.

Lots of good work so far by Coach Harbaugh. He is casting a wide net.

These five stars are so dicey though, perhaps his rep can be a difference maker for us.

I am sure he will bring in good recruits, but I am a little suspect in the interest of some of these guys.

Seems like we were shoo ins for five stars before like Hand, Garnett and Treadwell and, in the end, no go.

I think JHs rep will make a difference, but until I see some LOIs, I am not getting to excited. The one thing JH probably did not miss about college ball is this recruiting game. It is tough and hyper competitive out there for these talented kids.

if you TRULY don't cheat. Most schools considered "clean" cheat in some way, however minor. If his philosophy truly is (and I hope it is) that cheaters have already lost than those truly upper echelon kids will almost always go to the same few schools. Paying Mom's bills beats a reputation as high as Harbaugh's almost every time.

Im being a bit of a homer but... I think the NFL coaches we have on our staff will pay off. These kids want to end up there and with a staff like this its almost like an NFL internship. I dont believe these kids care about the weather as a factor as most want you to believe. I mean come on Ive been to every Michigan home game since 94 and I can only think of a handful of games where the weather was really bad. Not to mention I know we all love Harbaugh and thats from a Michigan fans standpoint. Think of his influence to a kid thats an outsider...a college QB at this fine university....played in huge games. Hes also a QB with NFL experience but not only that.....hes coached college and took every team hes coached to a high level. On top of that an NFL coach that has taken his team to a Super Bowl. My gosh how can a kid that wants to make it to the NFL listen to anyone else? Sorry for my run on sentences and horrible writing skills but Im excited and on my cell phone. I think Marshall comes here. Cheers and Go Blue.

(nor should anyone) but I've been writing what a Harbaugh staff would be like since pre-Hoke. I'm not tooting my horn but I've got my hand on it as now that we have him and everything I've written that's been ignored is now being said as a new thought I'm finding bothersome. Maybe I want credit and it's an awful thing to want? I dunno? Again, a family friend played under Jim at Stanford. I wrote what would happen multiple times and it is. I even said Peppers would be a safety under Harbaugh (many thought he should always have been so no credit there). I guess I feel....*sniffles*.... underappreciated, guys. It hurts, ha. Ok, half joking aside, under Jim UM week be an NFL conduit from both the staff and player side. Of course it's going to pay dividends. Staff transitions will happen a lot but that's almost always a good thing if it's to or from the NFL.

I'm a joke of what I thought was a well known and mocked twitter user that cries about not being given credit over obvious "if UM hired Harbaugh" predictions. However, the "family friend playing under him part" is true and I've shared it. It's a joke about the guy going apeshit over JP moving to safety & Harbaugh "predictions" unnoticed by his 44 followers lol. Just a joke, man. A joke I assumed most would get (maybe did?).

I think this is a great development for us. His dad plays a large role in his recruitment (in a good way) and so having him be able to meet the coaches will go a long way. He is still planning to visit LSU but I think if he does end up leaving Cali and passing up USC it will be for us as opposed to LSU/FSU. My completely arbitrary odds are 80% USC / 20% non-USC.

know nothing about the kid's personal life and I just get the feeling he's a USC lock based on what I hear/read. That said, we seem to have covered a ton of ground in a short time. That's good but I'm off the mind that it's enough effort bit not enough time to break the bonds that he has with USC, his likely visions of already playing there, etc. I also wouldn't rule out LSU on regard to absolutely coming to UM if not USC. LSU is like DB university in the way they have churned good ones out lately & he WILL get the "full tour" in Baton Rouge. Plus, I know Les loves UM but this is recruiting. He's going to downplay UM & USC. Even if he doesn't go to LSU he could hear some things that turn him off to us (whatever these coaches say?!). Does being slighted for the job add some venom? I dunno? I'd expect the old Les that has openly told recruits "if not here than Michigan" after being turned down/cut but even if USC wasn't seeming like such an obvious lock, I don't see how going to LSU helps us. I'm unfortunately sticking with my "not enough time" notion and think we don't turn a top 100 type this class. No Marshall, Weber, Smith, KLS, etc. If we only had more time (!) but it rings great for future recruiting, IMO.

Clark, Marshall, Arnette, Reagan Williams, Reuben Jones, Will Lockett and Roquan Smith- think this might be how the class wraps up?  Maybe 1 or 2 OLine also in there.

not much on Marcus Lewis, KLS, John Kelly who we thought Harbaugh would nab right away.

Lewis seems bound for Miami. Lucier-South is UCLA unless Jim Mora disappears. Kelly has been somewhat wishy-washy. Not that it's a criticism, but I thought he would have committed SOMEWHERE by now, whether it's Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee, etc.
