Recruiting: Remaining Need, Interest in Michigan, Best Available?

Submitted by StephenRKass on

So, I just can't get my mind around having 12 recruits already committed. This is completely unreal, and hard to fathom. That means we only have room for 10 or 11 more recruits in the 2013 class. Almost a year away til signing day. Unbelievable. Tremendous.

Having looked at Ace's "Hello" posts, and the interest from potential recruits still out there, I'm trying to think through how they match up. Magnus & Aquaman already put together a list of who they'd most like to see come to Michigan. There's no point in replicating the work they've already done. However, a corollary list would be remaining needs, and reasonable likelihood of coming to Michigan. Here's a list to start. I'd like to know three things:

  1. What needs are missing below?
  2. Who on the list below is unlikely to come to Michigan?
  3. Who has an offer in an area where we no longer have need. (for example, are we all set at TE, or would we still make room, say, for Breneman?)

Obviously, being a Michigan homer, I want just 5 star and four star recruits. But I also want a sense of who "realistically" might come to Michigan, and who would best fit the needs at Michigan.

WR Laquon Treadwell
WR (slot?? Who?)
LB E.J. Levenberry
LB Dorian O’Daniel (edited, per Aquaman.)
LB Mike McCray (added, per Aquaman.)
OL Ethan Pocic
DT Henry Poggi
DT Eddie Vanderdoes
RB Ty Isaac
CB? (Hargreaves? Who else? I don't know who is high on Michigan.)
SS? (is there an offer with serious interest? Do we need another beyond Dymonte?)

Best available for last 2 - 3 spots? (assuming we don't take 3 LB, or 2 WR?)

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel it is bad form to compare potential recruits to current players?  If it is just me, then disregard, if not, I hope our current LBs make you regret your underestimation of them.

I think he meant from a rating standpont.  Either way, I took it more of "as good as our LB haul was last year, that would be even better" which isn't really a knock on the 2012 guys.  People have made the same comment about out OL haul this year vs last year as well.

Another safety... perferably a SS.

And latest updates (primarily from Dukes interview) suggests that they are taking 3 WRs in this class.   Maybe a "slot" guy  (as in a Borges 5'10" slot guy... not the 5'6" type of yesteryore)

They are definitely going after slot guys in the Gallon mold....which, if they are trying to emulate the Pats' offense, having a Wes Welker/Troy Brown out there would be beneficial.

Quick is a guy that fits the mold (though he's just a good WR in general IMO), LaRue as well(whose video I really really like....though he showboats a bit too much), and Onwualu all seem to be that shifty bubble screen type guy they might be looking for.

The general consensus on mgoboard is that he's pretty underrated which like this is a fan site. It doesn't count for much. I personally doubt he's that underrated or OSU would have offered. I'm not someone who can break down a kid's game from a highlight package, but you don't have to be to tell that he has trouble getting separation. I'm not complaining about the commit, it's perfectly fine since we'll probably take another two receivers. But it sure would be nice to get an early impact gamebreaking type receiver in this class and Dukes doesn't look like that guy.

Setting aside the fact that anyone can be compared to anyone the Hemingway comparison is pretty lazy. Hem was an absolute freak at coming down with the ball. There aren't many people like him. Also Dukes is a long strider, unlike Hemingway. I doubt he'll be able to accelerate/plant like Hemingway could. He is a lot taller, though.

1) Your iteration makes no sense because you butchered what I said.

2) Urban's offense starts 2 outside wide receivers. You know how many outside wide receivers we'll start when we're playing BorgesBall? 2.

3) Jaron Dukes isn't any player. He's from Columbus. If he looks like a likely big time player, it's strange Ohio didn't offer.

The thing about the star system for WR's is that they typically favor the fast "playmaking" receivers. Outside of a few physical freaks, a receiver who is 6'5" is usually not going to have the speed of a Diggs-like receiver, so he won't get the 5*.

Our coaching staff knows what kind of guys they want for their offense and filled the need for a big outside receiver with Dukes, and due to the early offer, I would guess that we are in no way settling. I can't wait to see Dukes with a Michigan jersey on jumping over little corners in the back of the endzone.

He has a relationship with Hoke back from his days at SDSU. Fuller is an outside shot for CB, wouldn't be surprised if he ended up with us but wouldn't be surprised if he didn't.
