Recruiting Questions: Frost & Lyons

Submitted by StephenRKass on

With the commitment of Desmond Morgan, and the prior commitment of Kellen Jones, we have two linebackers. Obviously, we still have Frost as a prospect. How many LBs could we take, and how interchangable or different are the needs at OLB & MLB?

Regarding Avery Walls going to Cal, the comment was made that we better hope to get Royster, as the only remaining safety prospect. Does this mean that we are no longer being considered by Lyons, who I thought was also a safety? Or are the roles filled by Royster & Lyons significantly different?

I was being sarcastic. Some people on this board are really stupid and ONLY WANT DEFENSIVE PLAYERS!!1!! Frost is coming in as a WR (if he comes) and some people here have been too stupid to realize players can switch. So my comment was making fun of them... I was kidding.

Frost would be a great get. So would any other division-1 talent of any position that wants to play for UofM, especially given the cirumstances.

without researching too heavily my guess is that if he is a potential LB candidate who happens to play WR then he is a large WR.  methinks similar to Cam Gordon's path of WR to FS, well maybe he's too big and slow for the FS role, lets move him down to a SS spot.  I'd rather see Frost just come in at one and excel at it than get bounced around Cam Gordon style.  however, if it takes he and the coaches a year or so to come to terms with where he is best suited fine.  but I don't think that will be at FS...

I think having them bounce around can be a very good thing. You learn the responsibilities of those positions, which helps in integrating yourself into the defense as a whole. For Cam, he learned how to play in space and how to play pass coverage, which will help him be a better all around LB.

Kris Frost is playing in the annual NC/SC Shrine Bowl. His coaches have him playing SAM in practice this week (closer to the line of scrimmage) where they said he's excelled.

I think our linebacker corps would end up like this in a few years,

WLB - Jones

MLB - Morgan

SLB - Frost

Not bad. We'll see what happens.

I talked to a former player at St. Ignatius, who is now coaching in the area. He thinks Jake Ryan has more potential at LB than the higher ranked kid from Ignatius who went to tOSU. And as mentioned below, there is also the possibility of Kinard.

Ryan has been moved to DE.  As for Frost, while I hope we get him I suspect that he goes elsewhere.  With him being an EE and the mess we're in with the coaching decision looming sometime after the bowl I just don't forsee any big timers committing here.  I suspect it played a role in us losing Walls too.  Luckily some recruits are waiting, but I suspect DB is blowing a huge opportunity for Michigan with this recruiting class.  My bet is with a coaching change Zettel is a Sparty, Dee looks elsewhere, and Michigan is lucky to end up in the top 35 recruiting not to mention the attrition.

Walls was lost to us ever since he visited out west months ago.  People only thought he was a Michigan lean b/c that was the last that anyone had heard.  He shut down after those visits, with some suspecting he was a silent commit to Oregon or Cal.  Even if Brandon had come out and said that Rich Rod was staying Walls would be going to Cal.  The mods over at Rivals have been saying for a while that they didn't have a good feeling about Walls coming to Michigan.

Walls was a strong lean and recruiting for us until he went out west for some visits.  But, if my memory serves me correctly, he was going to visit other schools after those visit.  He wanted to visit Sparty, UConn and a couple of other schools.  He didn't shut down because of that, I think he shut down because his grandmother got sick and focused on that.

DB's decision probably didn't have a direct effect on Wall's decision.  DGDestroys, Tom or anyone else correct me if I am wrong.

Jeez Negative Nancy. First of all, I don't know why Zettel would be less likely to play for JH - especially if he brings his D staff with him. We'll have a month to sway him anyway. Maybe DB lost us Walls, but probably not, he just liked the West Coast. If JH comes, maybe we lose Dee, but maybe not, and we'd likely take Hayes and Rawls at RB - not bad. Maybe we'd lose Crawford, but things sound good for Countess and 3 CBs is adequate. We don't have much longer, everyone needs to chill for a few weeks. All will end well.

He was doing well at Hargrave, but I think the coaches realize that they need to recruit lower risk players (thus solid student-athletes like Jones and Morgan).  And I also don't think Kinard's ceiling was extremely high, which means the coaches might think that Jones, Morgan, and others are just better players.

If a kid can't qualify coming out of high school, is he going to be able to keep up once he gets to college?  That's got to be a big question in a case like this...

Yeah, unless the coaches think Kinard can play TE (his body type is perfect fore it) then I'd suggest we don't take him at this point. We have bigger needs elsewhere, OL, TE, DT, S, QB, WR. Almost every position group but LB. Cam Gordon and MRob are freshmen this year, and one or both will be LBs next fall, Mike Jones and Isaiah Bell will be sophs as well and Jake Ryan and Furman both redshirted. Add in Morgan and Kellen Jones and that's a lot of young LBs, even if Frost isn't included. I can't believe I'm saying this, but LB looks pretty good for the foreseeable future.

Pros:

  • Apparently doesn't mind the cold.
  • Aboverage jaw strength.
  • Excellent pad level.

Cons:

  • Isn't from Michigan. Further cements Dantonio's dominance over the state.
  • Would result in even more Lion King references. Would rather have a tiger so Kipling references would be more natural.
  • Stumpy legs.

Whether as a LB or WR Frost is a MUST get recruit. He have no WR in this class right now because of the unfortunate Conway DNQ. At this point Forst/Zettel/Bryant are the top remaining recruits on our board. If we can lock up those 3 (and keep what we have) I'll be ecstatic...

Frost, Zettel, Bryant these remaining recruits are critical along with obtaining one or two more secondary commits. Need to keep hart and get some of the recruits listed above to complete this recruiting class(strong).

kind of a big deal

Where are the DT commits?  Football games are won and lost in the trenches, and I'm fearing that this part of the team is extremely lacking.

We're losing some seniors from what wasn't a great line this year, and replacing them with Redshirt freshman and a position switch player in Q Washington.  Martin and RVB will be great and solid if healthy, J Black looks promising, after that...

We're basically an angry michigan DL hating god tantrum away from next years DL being equivalent to this years secondary.
