recruiting question...
So I was wondering something...
We see these young athletes can commit and de-commit to teams very easily. They seem to change their minds with the wind.
Can we change our mind if we want to at ANY time, for ANY reason? If we have offered, are we bound if they decide to come to our school?
until they sign LOI. Right now, and I think for the foreseeable future, 'a commit' simply creates pub for the recruit and the school.
Both parties can pretty much do whatever they want until the LOI is in.
See Jordan Barnes and DeWayne Peace.
It looks extremely bad to just pull a scholarship for no reason (see Kiffin, Lane) but there are ways of making your interest or non-interest known, such as just not contacting the guy anymore.
I would really have to say if we were bound to every offer out there if even half of them signed we would be up poo-poo river. No we are not bound to anything the same as they are not bound to us. When they sign the letter they are bound to us and likewise we are to them but until then it is an open game
it's for that reason that each offer has language that states that once a position has filled up, the offer is void.
You're right, although I think the language isn't about specific positions but the NCAA rule about roster limits. And this rarely comes into play, I'd imagine, hence all the subtle ways of letting recruits know they're not really wanted anymore.
but my question is... what if a position fills up and something better comes along. Can we can the low man for someone we want more?
And if we can...will we? Won't that make Michigan look horrible? Or don't we care?
Just stop making contact or tell the kid you want him to play a different position. Not the way I would like things handled, but....
