Recruiting for the O-line?

I know that we need as many bodies as we can get on D, but is any one else a little disturbed to see that there is still only one O-lineman in the '10 recruiting class? Tom or anyone else have any insights?

I would've liked to see one more, but I'm not disturbed. Given the situation with our defense, and the depth we have at OL, I'm ok with it. Molk will only be a redshirt junior next year, Omameh has taken over the right guard spot as a redshirt freshman (which is great), Ricky Barnum is progressing well, Taylor Lewan was mentioned by Rich Rodriguez as showing progress, etc. They need to focus on D, we'll get a couple OL in this next class, I'm sure.

I'm not really concerned with the lack of O-lineman recruits as much as I'm concerned with the talent of the recruits. You can recruit 10 O-linemen, but if none of them are very good you're going to have a poor O-line. We had a pretty good recruiting class last year, but we need to repeat that. The redshirt freshmen we have on the O-line this year can be good for us in the future but as of right now, this O-line doesn't look like it's ever going to be one of the best in the Big Ten like it used to be. We need a couple of elite O-linemen recruits to hold down the O-line and the rest can take care of depth.

I would like to see a little more concentration on the offensive line. I think we're a little heavy on wide receivers/slot receivers (if none of those guys switch positions), and we might even end up with cornerback overkill (4 cornerbacks might be a bit much). It would be nice to get just one more offensive lineman in this class.

O-line is a numbers position. I think you want to have roughly 15 scholarship guys on the roster competing for starting spots. I'm not all that worried about the current situation (given the number of quality freshmen) but I would like to see us land one more guy. A class with one o-lineman (or zero if Pace for some reason doesn't pan out) can put a lot of pressure on the neighboring classes.

I really do not think 4 CB's is overkill at all. If there is even a 20% chance ONE of them could contribute as a safety in 2 years, it is worth it. Getting as many talented CB's as you can get right now makes complete sense even at the minimal expense of other position groups.

I don't think we need to be thinking about the offense at this point in time. We are one of the top offenses in college football and we put up enough points per game to be able to keep every game close against most teams. Obviously, our main weakness is our defense. You typically don't win football games when you give up 42 points to a good Wisconsin team. from everything i've heard, we have a lot of depth with the o-line. We should focus on recruiting defensively now that RR has his guys for the offense.

We are one of the top offenses in college football and we put up enough points per game to be able to keep every game close against most teams. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but we are nowhere CLOSE to being one of the top offensive teams in college football. But hey I guess if you think putting up 10 points on Penn State, 21 on Iowa (7 were the defense),20 at State, and 17 on Wisconsin (another 7 by the defense) - the 4 best defense we have faced - qualify you has a high powered offense more power to you. 17 points a game on average against good teams with a terrible defense won't win you any games and it hasn't.

(superb post above) The team that wins is the one who has the most points at the end of regulation play. I agree, mr bern. Just imagine what the offensive production in two years will be. If we continue to have a bad defense, we will still win two years from now. With a defense, we will win soon.
