Any quotes from all the elite recruiting talent that was in attendance last night? Amazing atmosphere, dominating performance, national exposure, and staff and players staying calm and poised through the 5 minute snake-bitten period in the fourth quarter...Have to think recruits and their parents were impressed with the visit.
Get the reactions out first, Coach Brown! This is where you overtake TomVH! He's getting complacent!
Replace "TomVH" with "ESPN" and you nailed it. ESPN decided to dump all their Recruiting Nation forums without explanation (just a "we're shutting down the forums August 26!" note). As a member, these are the days that decision really sucks because Tom and crew would be posting visitor reactions and tidbits all day. Now we get nothing and have to wait until at least Monday for Tom's article to be posted, all the while my Twitter feed is full of visitor reaction teasers from other pay sites. ESPN really dropped the ball on this, IMO.
They shut the nation sites down because over all they weren't making money. They didn't say they were shutting them down because it would be admitting defeat, so they just shut the forums which was the main reason. Now almost all the content is just the free Big Ten blog stuff with a few recruiting articles. No one really went there for anything outside of the recruiting stuff because you can get more in depth coverage from other outlets for free.
It probably didn't help that a ton of the people who signed up just did it through magazine deals at less than $4 per year instead of paying the $3 a month subscription so the revenue was low to non-existant to pay a staff of 3 plus the hosting and everything else. You would need around 50,000 members to justify the expenses and aside from Wolverine Nation the sites were pretty dead with practically no forum activity.
Of 19.99, I'll let you in on the secret recruiting news that no one else has seen yet.
If you listen to my presentation on timeshares in the Burmuda Triangle.
lol, good one
...a good deal on one of these. The best selling point is that it's about 2 miles away from the alien wormhole vortex of death, so I feel pretty safe.
"he (Hand) mentioned he wanted to see is how this coaching staff handles their players in the face adversity"
I don't know for sure if he will come here or not, but I know one thing for sure . . . he certainly won't be going to Notre Dame.
BK lit into Rees pretty bad after the late INT to Countess. Athough I am usually amused by BK's purpleness, that one kind of pissed me off. Early in a game I can maybe understand yelling at a player if that's what you think is necessary to get his attention. But at that point, the game was basically over--yelling isn't going to accomplish anything, it was just BK venting his frustration on a kid who had played his heart out for four quarters and was probably more disappointed in himself for that mistake than BK could ever be. If anyone wonders why UM is recruiting so well right now, just compare that scene with the coaches on Michigan's sideline who always put the kids first.
Yeah, if I was in Rees' position I wouldn't have been able to keep it together when Kelly did his petulant little sarcastic shrug as Rees came to the sidelines. Props to him for not blowing up.
I was wondering if Swarbrick made Kelly pop a Xanax before every game last year. Of course it is easier not to blow up when you are winning.
Can you imagine if Reese had thrown the ball away like dg in the end zone? Kelley would have killed him. Props to abc for showing it. NBC would have cut away.
Good thing the game was on ESPN--they probably would have shown the explosion, which would have made Eminem sound coherent.
So purple face rage is not hurting Kelly.
They don't see his purpleness until their first year at ND. Then they transfer. Boom, BK'd.
He might be recruiting them but they're not sticking around once they get to campus.
I had the same reaction. That's the time to put your arm around him, tell him you're proud of him for how he performed on that stage (which I thought was very well), and then tell him that you'll help him learn from the mistakes later in the week. That's an unbelievable amount of pressure for a college kid, and to lay into him on national television for a mistake that he already feels awful about is, to me, way over the top.
If I were a recruit, there's no way I'd want to play for an asshole like him. I strongly prefer the Hoke/Carr style of protecting players in the public and taking care of the discipline and criticism behind closed doors.
From my vantage point at the game Tommy Rees is a good player while BK is a donkey. I hope Rees can laugh about BK in 10 years after his pro career as a backup is over.
Can't upvote,but must say,You are spot on!
Parenting,Coaching or in the work place, this approach trumps all others.
Not sure how many people cought it because it was kind of under his breath, but Herbstreet (spell?) said "I'm sure glad that isn't me". I don't think he was out of place saying that, but it's pretty bad (the coaches actions) when the announcing team is making comments like that.
I think this might have been the perfect game for him to see.
1) While our D-line wasn't horrible, we were clearly not getting a ton of pressure from our ends. I don't know why that was, but I think Mr. Hand wouldn't have to look hard to see where he's needed to make a very good team great.
2) The kid wanted atmosphere. How's the largest crowd ever? How about the packed student section at the game's start? How about ESPN visiting campus? That probably couldn't have gone better.
3) Last, but not least, the contrast between Kelly and Hoke couldn't have been sharper. I'm not sure if Mr. Hand saw it, but Kelly absolutely lost his stuff when his offense needed a timeout right after an extended break (half or quarter, I forget).
4) The support teammates showed for Devin after his interception must've added to his expectations for a family atmosphere. Supportive with high expectations? Come on down.
In all, a great night for that particular recruit. It's likely that it was a great night for M's recruting generally.
I thought the same thing about point 3 (agree on all of the above really). That TO was a really good apples to apples comparisons between the two coaching staffs. Both teams burned a time out unnecessarily. Hoke was frustrated but was professional about it, called the players over, had a few words and sent them back out there and let the position coaches do their jobs. Kelly reprised his purple faced tantrum over what was a much less critical TO, yelling at the entire offensive line and Tommy Rees. Obviously Brian Kelly is an exceptional asshole, but the contrast couldn't be clearer.
a chance to sit down with Gibbons. If there is a better story out there, I'd be happy to read it.
That's an excellent point. With all the hoopla, I totally forgot about that success story. Both his field goals were so true. Great stuff.
Glenville recruits were there and apparently loved the atmosphere.
They all liked their visit
What a great night. How could you not want to commit? Anxious to hear the reactions.
Still not as big as Texas A&M's class last year...
There are some updates on 247($), positive of course from everyone. Doesn't sound like any commits are imminent. But very good reactions from Hand camp, McDowell camp, Lattimore, Hilliard and others.
They all committed. All of them.
Everyone in the 2014 class committed to Michigan
I committed. I'm in my 40s--and Michigan isn't actually recruiting me. I just got caught up in the moment.
They pressured you to commit even without an offer didn't they?
But pre-game, Da'Shawn Hand went into the first row of the stands through the band entrance to take a picture with a kid who had a sign that said:
"Te'o Still Snapchats Lenay"
With letters capitalized and such to spell ESPN. Obviously nothing big, but cool to see him so excited by the sign and the fans,
Yes tons of news, but we are hiding it from you
that the unbelieveable atmosphere and game results last night did Michigan very well. How much, we'll have to see. But, things couldn't have gone any better all around.
The 2015 OL who came up with Hand and Settle. He's been tweeting great things all the last day, such as:
Michigan is awesome!
I don't think Burrell will get offered, because it sounds like if the coaches find room to offer another OL they told Edoga it would be him.
Paging canzior to the recruiting reactions thread...
the commits should and will come soon!!!
I saw some tall kid who was being shown around the outside of the stadium before the game. My friend and I got overzealous and starting whispering, "look at him... I bet he's a recruit." He ends up turning aroud and talks to us. Told us his name was Prince, and he was a sophomore defensive end recruit. Had a slight african accent. We told him how great the girls an Ann Arbor are, at which point he says that he isn't choosing where to go to school based on the girls. We didn't know what to say, so we told him the food is great and Coach Hoke is the greatest coach ever. Yeah... I don't think he's considering Michigan anymore. Note to self: don't talk to recruits.
Minus all the points for you.
and are forbidden from not only talking to any recruits, but being within 100 yds of them.
You obviously are not in the B school
I got down voted for saying that a lot of recruits I hosted were not concerned with girls among their serious criteria. This guy might have been religious and possibly put off if he thought you were stereotyping him as one of those athletes that just wants to get laid.
He goes to a pretty conservative Christian academy here in Cincinnati, whch wouldn't necessarily imply anything about his own views about life but from the story told here it certainly fits.
you did not pay attention to your own signature.
It was a joke. We were just trying to get a chuckle out of him. He was honestly very cool about the whole thing and seemed interested in the campus/everything that was going on around him. Hopefully we can land this kid. He would be a terrifying defensive end with a little bit more weight.
Prince Michael Sammons from Cincinnati. He is a 6'7 255 pound Sophomore Defensive End. Apparantly he is in Ann Arbor this weekend. He is an athletic freak from Nigeria. Was playing basketball but his future is in football.
I'm not positive if this is true, as I don't have a Scout account, but apparently Allen Trieu tweeted that Erik Swenson's dad was wearing a Michigan Jersey with 'Swenson' on the back. For a guy who is considered a heavy favorite to go to Michigan, that is about as good of a sign as you can get without a Hello post following it.
Also, his own last name? Swenson.
That is true. I saw them walking up and down the aisle a couple times. I'm no detective, but that seems like a clue to what the family is thinking.
I saw Da'Shawn Hand and McDowell with a pack of current players crossing the busy intersection on South U. after the game. The rapport between all of them looked strong to say the least, seemed like they were having a good time.
As I passed by Hand I straight-up said to him, "Why haven't you committed yet?" He gave me a sly grin, nodded his head, and looked about the current players like he knew something I didn't.
I got kind of a good vibe.
...knows where he is going next year. He was interacting with everyone...Settle was with him in background (don't know if he got offered) but did not have the same positive vibes (obvious enthusiasm) that Hand did. Hand also looks like he is ready for the NFL...Settle needs a good year or two in the weight room. Also saw 2016 OL recruit Swenson and his father enjoying themselves...they are large people.
Swensons dad is one of the biggest humans I've ever seen. He has the head the size of a pumpkin. And when I saw Erik it was the summer before his 8th grade. He was enormous for that age.. He'll commit when he's ready, but he's a lock
Kinda creepy bro
...high school recruiting update thread. Kinda funny...bro.
Bc someone cannot comment negatively on a topic they are bringing negative thoughts into. Your point makes no sense; perhaps he came in to make sure people weren't taking their interest too far or, GASP, for columnist links
Um...and my comment makes no sense?...ok.
I got zero inkling of creepiness reading about these interactions. Perhaps it takes a creepy mind to read creepiness into them.
Someone on 247sports said he saw Hand, Mone, Prescott Burgess and Coach Manning in "church attire" at a restaurant.
Yeah, Mone and Hand were in the buffet line in front of me at Gandy Dancer Sunday morning. I'm surprised there was food left--Mone especially is a large human! Hand was wearing a Michigan T-shirt though, not church attire.
There were a couple other recruits and coaches there, in addition to the ones you named.
Awesome! What current players?
Just curious about how people feel about the loss of ND on future recruiting? Would the recruits think "this is wonderful but it's ending", or maybe "this is wonderful and it will still be great with other top programs"?
The second one
On who replaces ND. Likely it will be a 9 conference schedule, which includes PSU, RU, and MD. Those other schools are not awesome, but there is a ton of talent in those states. Therefore, it will help us.
I'm not saying at all that A guy like Peppers comes to Michigan without RU, but now, his family and friends will see him in NJ 2x in his career and will see him within a short drive if PSU and UMD
But Notre Dame seems irrelevant without the Michigan rivalry.
Add on to it that USC is pretty bad right now, and that MSU, Purdue, and Navy are all declining, and you have a pretty unimpressive ND lineup for the next few years . . .
-of-the-road team in a resurgent ACC? They could be in a world of hurt.
I believe that spots will loosen up by a fair amount by the end of the season (really by the end of '14 spring practice)...
I count maybe 4 on the roster that may not be granted a 5th year, plus maybe 5 transfer candidates in search of PT. I won't name names out of respect for the kids, but I think there will be another 3-6 spots or more opening up for the next two classes.
On the thoughts of "Leroy Hoard"
Word on the street is that a certain legacy recruit for the 2015 class is trying to get his parents to let him commit.
Bo Harbaugh Brady Henne Yost Jr?
If the class keeps filling up, I'll be doing '16 scouting reports soon...
I thought his parents would love for him to go blue.
There were 23 silent commits this weekend, however I am sworn to secrecy to tell you which ones. Look for them to be unveiled in the weeks and months ahead, one by one...or perhaps two by two.
Anybody have a true visitors list? How about a list of confirmed sightings?
