Recruiting Effect on Kelly to ND

Submitted by Knappster on

I keep hearing how Kelly to ND hurts Michigan's recruiting. I guess one optimistic way to look at it is that UM most likely won't be competing with Cincy AND ND, just ND now. Unless somehow Cincy can keep recruits high on them.

Charlie Weis never struggled to recruit great talent. I don't see this changing anything. We need to start delivering on the field every Saturday and worry about what we can do to improve our lot on the recruiting trail. Let's not get too preoccupied with this Kelly hire. It's still business as usual as far as I'm concerned.

I think Kelly's recruiting will affect more regional schools like OSU and MSU than it would Michigan, especially since RichRod has slowly shifted our branches of recruiting to more Southern states and other states nationally.

But Notre Dame has always had to recruit a different type of athlete so I dont think you'll see as big of an effect as you think.

OSU's recruiting pull is pretty damn strong and not just in the Great Lakes/midwest region. ND may cut into that a bit, but I don't see Tressel losing sleep over recruiting vs. ND, although he may lose sleep over gameplanning vs Kelly.

MSU might actually benefit because Dantonio's team isn't a spread team and they'll likely be stronger in recruiting than Cincinnati under Kelly's successor.

ND has always pulled well, and usually they've pulled a higher caliber of player than our friends in East Lansing.

I think the more interesting thing is how Kelly to ND will affect the coaching landscape with assistant coaches. Cinci may be able to retain some of his talent (at least until a new HC is named) but there will be a big scramble for assistant coaches. These are the guys who have made his recruiting possible. The grunt work done in the trenches for recruits is not done by the HC.

But I can imagine a lot of other coached asking recruits if they want to play for a coach that will probably be leaving in a few years to head to the NFL.

Exactly. What is ND going to do when either BC or the NFL has an opening. I believe that is the reason why he isn't here in the first place. It is obvious that Kelly is positioning himself for a future NFL or BC position. His rapid ascension is indicative of that. I did not want Michigan to be just another notch on his belt. Michigan is too good for that shit. ND, enjoy him while you can. And before somebody says it, no I am not envious. I am 100% behind RR.

Notre Dame had a higher rank (according to Rivals) in 4 of the last 6 recruiting classes (including the current 2010 class, although it's not complete yet). So, is BK really gonna have THAT much more of detrimental impact on our classes (in terms of us vs. them)?
