Recruit Reactions to BBQ

Submitted by RakeFight on

For those who can't wait for Ace's recruiting update tomorrow, here's a few tidbits from post-BBQ recruiting interviews (please see earlier thread for comprehensive coverage of Derrick Green).  Feel free to add other reactions that you've come across.

2013 WR Devon Allen has no stated leaders.  On the impact of his visit to the BBQ on his interest in Michigan:  “It increased,” Allen said. “It really opened my eyes.”

2014 CB Parrker Westphal has Michigan as leader per 247.  His reaction to the BBQ visit: "They're [Michigan] still the standard."

2014 OT Tommy Doles, Michigan and ND leading per 247.  “I like it a lot,” Doles said of Michigan. “The fact that they offered me first – that means something. And they stress leadership and academics and a lot of cool stuff there. I really don’t have a list of schools, but I really do like it at Michigan a lot.”

2014 LB Michael Ferns, Michigan, ND, PSU leading.  On whether or not he almost commited at the BBQ: "It crossed my mind," Ferns stated.  "You get up there and you start seeing the people you're going to be around for the three, four years I'll be there. It's a great group. The coaching staff is great and knowing you're going to be around great people, it's kind of an easy deal."

2014 WR Artavis Scott (not yet offered), no stated leaders.  Impressions: “It was raw,” Scott said. “I liked it. Everything – there’s nothing not to like. The campus – it’s raw. There’s nothing else to say about it. It’s sick.”  On whether Michigan would be amongst his leaders if they offer: "Hell yes."

2014 DE Conor Sheehy, offered at the BBQ, no stated leaders.  “The long-lasting tradition, and just the way they do things right, and always have, stand out to me about Michigan.”

2014 OT Mason Cole, Michigan now stated leader.  "Very high," Cole said. "It just had that home feeling. For right now, it's my favorite."

It's a great group. The coaching staff is great and knowing you're going to be around great people, it's kind of an easy deal."

For the older generation, the following statement represents variations of saying "I think it was great!"

"That shit was [nasty][raw][real][crazy][wicked][retarded]!"

You can also add in the adjective "f_cking" in order to add emphasis.

I know that the coaches have 2013 essentially locked up, but we have yet to see anybody from the class of 2012 play a single down of college football.  Not trying to be all uppity in a thread about mostly 2014 recruits, but with the exception of a couple guys (*cough*MalikMcDowell*cough*) it's just way too early, man.

So you're saying there's a chance?  I read ya.

Frog....what I'm gonna say is gonna hurt you deeply, but you know you're White right? I'm talking raised on Polock Street White. Where your mommy used to drag you down to St.Casmere like all the Piss-pants on the block. And you know what? I'm also White. Not hanging on the corner and don't give a f White. But locus-point, IBS, local-47-White. I don't work without a contract, and I don't stand around listening to excuses like my cousin Ziggy, whom, is STILL owed money by YOU and all your down street-wise wiggers.

If you follow Tremendous on Facebook, there are some updates there as well.

For example, Conor Sheehy was actually given his offer in person by Brady Hoke after the BBQ, and according to the interview summary posted there, Hoke actually did tell Devon Allen that they would like to add him because Michigan is "looking for that speed guy".

11 of the 24 recruits for 2014 who were invited to the BBQ already held Michigan offers, as I recall, and I think Green and Allen were the only 2013 recruits there that were not Michigan commits. If nothing else, it's great to hear that the impression of the facilities and the campus were very positive - that certainly helps.

Regarding the discussion on semantic change, "ridiculous"....I still have trouble when someone says, "That guy is a ridiculous athlete", for example, or when Mario Impemba describes Justin Verlander's stuff as "ridiculous", and I have to consciously remember that this is now a compliment.

a kickoff return guy mainly, or as a receiver to run under Morris's bombs?  Either way I guess I'd love to see him a Wolverine (as would the track coach I imagine).

Why in the hell would anyone consider going to PSU. You wont even go to a bowl game. PSU will be eligible for a bowl game Fern's senior year at PSU but highly unlikely to happen. Hell they will have a hard time getting enough kids to play. I dont get it.

I'm not sure if those truly represent his current leaders... those were his stated leaders prior to the NCAA sanctions, and the leaders the article where the quote came from mentioned.  But I have not seen anything that directly addresses whether PSU is still among his leaders since the NCAA investigation.  I agree, you would think that would drop them.  Then again, there's at least half a doazen 2013 commits that have reaffirmed their commitment to PSU, so you never know.
