Recommended places to eat this weekend

Submitted by cincymichman on

I'm bringing a group of 10 to Ann Arbor to watch the game this weekend.  If you guys/gals could give me some spots that are "can't miss" restaurants I would appreciate it.

I'm very familiar with the Brown Jug because that is usually the only place I go because I'm in town only on game day.  This weekend we are heading up Friday so we will have at least 2 times to eat out.

Suggestions are much appreciated.  All of the sUCks fans understand they will be dominated on the field.  GO BLUE!!!!!

I would only say Deli > Roadhouse. I took my gf to Frita Batidos on our second date; I thought she was mad at me for some reason because she was not speaking. Turns out your first Frita Batidos experience is a spiritual one. I have not had the priviledge of that amount of quiet from her since.

Its not for everyone. I'm a foodie. Lets approach it this way: lets say you want to pick up some steaks for a weekend cookout. Would you spend 50% more for the same cut of beef if it is USDA Prime instead of USDA Choice? I would. If you said "I'll take the cheaper one, they are both the same cut of meat," you'll want M&B deli over zingermans. If you're like me and you can really taste and appreciate the difference between two things that aren't much different on paper, you spend the extra $ and get the prime steaks. You get zingermans. If you want pastrami because you love pastrami, go to M&B. If you want the pastrami experience of a lifetime and you're willing to pay a premium, go to zingermans. There is no wrong choice. Its a matter of preference. But to say zingerman's is "nothing special" is spiteful and ignorant.

Zingerman's corned beef is just Sy Ginsberg's. It's not like some angelic host is bestowing glory on meat.

I appreciate good food. But we're talking deli sandwiches here. The whole "I can taste better than you" thing? Please. You're paying for good ingredients and a great brand, nothing more, nothing less. When you're paying $60-70 bucks for a deli lunch for two when all is said and done...

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Zingerman's for what it was and could be, but the current iteration is just comically transparent.

Guess I struck a nerve with my analogy there, Bando. My bad. Again, it is perfectly understandable to prefer M&B. It is superior to Zingerman's in affordability and in waiting in line. It is insane to believe there isn't an appreciable difference in the food. To your point about "just Sy Ginsbergs" corned beef: is there a locally produced corned beef of higher quality?

Yes $60 for deli lunch for two is unreasonable, but your quality complaints are unfounded. Ask for a pate and roast beef with muenster and a little horseradish on toasted rye from both places. I promise you won't get the same thing. Agreed, the corned beef is the same, but it is the only meat or cheese that is.

define not superior.  You might not like it better as a personal taste thing but the bread from the roadhouse>the bread maize and blue buys from meijer, the cheese from the dairy and other sources around the region and world> than the processed cheese you can get from meijer used at maize and blue.  The corned beef and pastrami are the same but the variety of menu options at zingermans is greater.

The reality is also that if you are just buying a sandwich your are doing it wrong at zingermans.  They spend a lot of money on training staff to be knowledgable about food and having ingredients and food you don't normally see.  That training and getting those different ingredients is factored into the price so if you aren't taking advantage of that you aren't taking advantage of what you are paying for.  Not to mention you don't have to care about these things but Zingermans pays its staff better, offers pto, retirement help, etc. to full time staff, is active in the community, donates 10% of profits every year to charity, etc.  All of that contributes to a higher price.  You don't have to care about those things, to pretend like there aren't real legitimate differences between the two places that account for the difference in price is just being stupid.

is my go-to spot for game day lunches, especially for 3:30 starts.

Depends on how much you want to spend and what you're looking for.  Ann Arbor has a lot of great food.  And it also has a lot of overpriced food.

Also, skip Zingermans in favor of Maize and Blue Deli.

You've wanted me  in the past to give you orchestral/choral heads up --so here you go. This Sunday free performance at 7pm at Hill Aud of Beethoven's Ninth. Write up in the A2 Observer Upfront section and in the Events section. Yes I'm singing and have performed it 5 times in the last year with the DSO and the Budapest Festival Orch.

Want to hit up the AA favorites then Zingerman's for lunch and Angelo's for breakfast. Dominic's is good for sangria could go to Fleetwood's for some hippie hash. I haven't lived there since 2014 though so maybe there are other places. Frita's and Redhawk are also good. Grab a beer at Ashley's too.

I enjoy Nick's for breakfast although it's near I-94 and you'll need to drive there. Otherwise I tell everyone who ever goes to Ann Arbor to go to Frita Batidos and they're never disappointed.
