Real-Time MGo-Map of Evanston for Saturday

Submitted by Seth on
Thank you to everyone who contributed. The final map is now live. Take the link below.

When do they do this? Where is that on the map? I have answers.

A startup called City Data Company makes these three-dimensional (North-South, East-West, and Time) maps for walkable spaces, usually for local festivals and the like.

The founder, fellow 2002 alum Tres Crow, offered to make one for MGoBloggers looking for stuff to see and do on game days so traveling readers can find each other and locals can let everyone know where the good things are.

Here's the current map:

http://dev.mycitywalkabout.com/map/a5771bce93e200c36f7cd9dfd0e5deaa

Pretty empty so far. So if you've got some place to add to the map before Saturday, respond below with what it is, the time (start and finish), the address or Google Map geo-location (latitude and longitude), and like half a sentence of description.

Examples of things to put in:

  • Your tailgates
  • Best places to park
  • Best places to eat on a game day
  • Favorite bars on a game day
  • Where the bus leaves from
  • Where Bacon's signing something
  • Where the Michigan players get off the bus
  • Pretty things on campus that you ought to see
  • Where cool Northwestern gameday traditions occur
  • The Alumni Association's official tailgate (one of the best)
  • The bar where alumni gather on Friday night
  • The spot to go to after the game if you want to stand around chanting the "It's great! To be! .." cheer. You know, like ironically.
  • Whatever other readers would be interested in on gameday.

Come Saturday people will be able to download the map to their phones from this site, and use it to kill time awesomely before the game.

Another crappy weather game to add to the collection against NU.

Let's see here...

  • 1998: W 12-6. Justin Fargas.
  • 2006: W 17-3. Rain and sleet
  • 2008: L 14-21 DOOM
  • 2013: W 27-19 Firedrill FG
  • 2014: ?

Add some if I'm missing any. I'm just going off of the top of my head. I'd check the game weather history in my 'Guide but I don't feel like searching.

Edzo's Burgers - 1571 Sherman Ave - The best burgers in Evanston, along with the best fries (try the garlic fries) and the best shakes. They have market specials, too. The place gets crowded on Saturdays, so go early.

Union Pizzeria - 1245 Chicago Ave - at the Dempster L stop. One of the better restaurants in Evanston. Cool space, wood-fired pizza and small plates. The food is always delicious. Nice selection of beers.

Daves Italian Kitchen
1635 Chicago Avenue

Try the spaghetti Diablo.

Used to be a great hole in the wall restaurant but moved into a somewhat newer facility about 15 years ago when downtown Evanston and a Metra stop underwent a huge overhaul.

The atmosphere is great and the food is amazing. I barely remember the hole-in-the-wall place but I was a kid when I used to go there. Ditto on the Spaghetti Diablo. The Chicken Marsuvio is great too.

I'd throw Flat-Top Grill in as well - Evanston was one of the original locations before the (now failed) expansion that had one in ann arbor at one point. Think BD's Mongolian except more, better, fresher veggies and more of a restaurant feel - put your bowl by the cookers and go back to your table. Get the Roti Prata on the side. You'll thank me.

We once went to Dave's with my then little kids in tow. My son, who was about 3 at the time, took the red pepper flake shaker and before we could grab it out of his hands, put it up to his mouth and inhaled. Needless to say, we were asking for the check 10 seconds later.

As someone who spends a lot of time on the NU campus, there isn't much there you're going to be wowed about if you've ever been to A2. Like, there's really no central diag. Campus is kind of an elongated strip of buildings crammed haphazardly on the lakefront. As far as classic college buildings, there's the Deering Library, which is nice enough from the outside, but that's just about it. The lakefront is nice, but it's a lakefront. The Union equivalent, Norris, is downright dismal and totally out of the way. So, cross the "pretty stuff to look at on campus" thing off the list, although the trees are kind of nice right now.

As far as gameday traditions, not much. If the weather's shitty, probably won't get a lot of students out there to begin with. It's nothing like a gameday at Michigan.

As far as drinking in Evanston, my go-to these days is Bat 17, as it's accessible, big enough to manage a game day crowd, and has a good beer selection. For food, I'm a fan of Dixie Kitchen. Found is pretty decent for good drinks, their food is also supposedly pretty good.

My plan on Saturday, honestly, is to spend all of my time in Chicago and then go up on the train. We're lunching in Andersonville. I find Evanston to be a bit on the lame side when you have Chicago right there and the Purple Line to drop you off near Ryan Field.

Union Pizza is great, especially if you want one destination after game for great pizza and small plates and good beer list. Edzo's, as noted above.

On your way out of game, try Bat 17 for late games, beers, good bar food. Most resembles a college bar with real atmosphere in Evanston.

Found is also very good. It's not the most sports-friendly place in town, but good food, bar, drinks, etc. Right next to Dave's Italian Kitchen. For chi-chi, go to Boltwood. Publican alum with very good food. Might be underdressed, but fuck it, who cares.

On your way south to Chicago, both Ward 8 and Peckish Pig on Howard are great places.

On the golf course, next to the Central L stop, across from Evanston Fire Station 3.  I'll be there drinking beer.  Will likely have M and Wings flags flying.

A bit off the train lines, but Temperance Beer Company, 2000 Dempster St, is a brewery with a tap room and their beers are quite good. They aren't a restaurant but they do have menus to order delivery. Won a silver at this year's GABF for English-style IPA.

Smylie Brothers (1615 Oak) has an event with a flight of 2 of their beers, 2 Founders (Rubaeus and Breakfast Stout) and 2 more from 3 Sheeps (Sheboygan, WI). As I understand it that place gets extremely busy and reviews are all over the place on it.

I logged in to mention these two as well.  For Temperance I can at least vouch that one of my pals and a UM alum is an investor, so there are worse ways to spend your beer money.

Also, if you're looking to pick up some fried food on the way to the golf course or parking lots around the stadium and are traveling light, I highly suggest the Chicken Shack for some incredible fried chicken.  There's extremely limited seating and near-zero dining ambiance, but for grabbing some food to go, it can hardly be beat.  Not far away is Hecky's BBQ, but I don't frequent that place though many love it.

Fellow M road warriors,

For those looking to tailgate at a bar in Evanston with nearly all M football fans, I am once again hosting tailgate fundraiser at the Bar Louie in Evanston at 1520 Sherman Ave from 11 AM – 2:30 PM. All specifics are below, but please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions. This is the third time we’ve hosted this tailgate fundraiser at Bar Louie (last 3 games) and we’ve always had an awesome crowd (150-250 M fans and even a few former players!). Would love to see folks from the MGoBlog community come out for good food, great drinks, awesome company, and two amazing causes.

Background

I run a philanthropic-focused venture called, Cause & Affect – we focus on creating events in Chicago to bring young professionals together to mingle, connect, and give back all at the same time.

Being a Michigan grad, the UM-NU game was a slam dunk for an event the last three games.

Admission

You do not have to buy tickets to tailgate in advance, it’s open to the public and family friendly as well. We kindly ask our guests for a $5 suggested donation or any amount that you can afford, but no obligations at all. At the very least, we are happy to raise awareness for the two organizations we are supporting. Good vibes go a long way!

Cause

Proceeds from the tailgate will help us create scholarships for Muchin College Prep and VOCEL.

Like last, we will award a student at Muchin College Prep (1 N. State Street) that will be heading to a B1G university next fall. Last year’s recipient is now a student at Illinois – of course, the goal is to support a future wolverine, but it always depends on admissions and whether or not there are candidates that accept their admission to UM (and can afford it).

The other scholarship will support a family in need and help allow their child to attend VOCEL. VOCELstands for Viewing Our Children as Emerging Leaders. VOCEL is an innovative non-profit, committed to dramatically altering the trajectory of young children in underserved communities of Chicago.

 Questions

Feel free to call/text me at 630-992-1851 with any questions.

Thanks and Go Blue!

Alan

*P.S. Rick, if you are reading this, would love to see you at Bar Louie again this year. My apologies, I lost your contact information, otherwise, I would have reached out directly. It was awesome that you saw my tailgate post from last year and came out to support and represented the MGoBlog community well!

The Noyes Corridor - Noyes St. between Ridge and Sherman. This is a stretch of street with several new restaurants including Tomate Fresh Kitchen, which has excellent handmade tacos and other Mexican street food. No tables, though. Also on the stretch are DMK Burger and Fish, Noyes Street Cafe, and Rollin' To Go - a good sandwich place with plenty of tables.
