Re. "You Suck!"

Re. the "You Suck!" at the end of the 3rd down stop version of Temptation, can we please please please stop it?

It's seriously trashy and classless, totally unbefitting the caliber of institution that Michigan is.  Maybe a difference in the way they are mic'ing crowd noise this year, but I noticed it more prominently than usual during the game on Saturday, and am noticing it a lot as I watch the game again right now.

I don't know if this is exclusively a student section thing or the whole stadium saying it.  But, whoever it is, stop.  You're embarrassing yourselves and Michigan.  Come up with something more clever / less trashy.

I'm right there with you on #2 and #3, but #1 is wrong.  The original gesture was a closed fist, as though the D was putting the hammer down to the opponent.  But a lot of students missed the memo and turned it into a chop.  Calling it a first-down signal doesn't make sense; we do it after we've prevented the opponent from gaining a first down.

As for the first down, I think the idea was that it was for the referee's signal for Michigan once the change of possession takes place.

But I can assure that the memo, at least when I was in school, was for people to do the claw.  This was a concerted campaign led by at least one yahoo at the Daily.  Maybe it was supposed to change to a closed fist since that time - which would be a huge improvement - but the original change was from first down/chop to claw.

But this thread embarrasses me. Now it's trashy to tell someone they suck. Jesus Christ.

People who are saying it isn't clever need to get over themselves and/or actually be clever. And no, that doesn't count those super witty comebacks that take ten minutes to tell the story about.

you suck is kinda lame, no fellas? With all the great cheers hockey has we can't do better than you suck? And body slamming someone who comes on to say so? Whoa? Please, lord, let's not let this place jump the shark.

I love the claw idea, but it looks like a g*d-danged chop. I've been making fun of my FSU fan-friends for years for doing it, and I almost crapped myself when I saw M fans doing it last week.

We got some noise in the house, finally; let's get more creative with the fan noise and chants. This is Michigan!

is not the problem. We curse like sailors around my house, and encourage our daughter to do the same. But do it with pride! Let loose a VOLLEY of epithets, not just some cheap unison you suck. I mean, if 133,000 people put their mind to it they could LEVITATE the Big House--let's get creative. We are the people who invented the wave, remember? We've got standards; let's lower them with a little more dignity!

Normal rules of society go out the window when it comes to sports chants. Doesn't make it right, or even unfunny at times, just the way it is.   Only distasteful to me when it's directed right at a college kid. Anything goes when it's to the whole team. Opposing team.

You suck.

The questions your asking about the morality of a football chant inevitably lead to one side saying, "Grumblegrumblegrumble." And the other raising their cheap, red plastic cups and shouting "WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

1. Guess who is having more fun.

2. Guess who lives in the real world/modern era.

3. Guess who's voice is louder? (Intended as humor, not a vindication of the following.)

4. Your basing your morality on what exactly? Because I doubt you can logically prove your system of ethics is superior to mine. In fact, civilizations have been attempting this for thousands of years. All of them have failed before the almighty individual in the end. You will fall as well. I suggest you leave others to their own devices. It's the only way to not come off like a total DB. Because no one likes being told what to do. Especially when they pretentiously claim the moral high ground.

What the hell are you talking about?

Where in any of my posts did I ever mention morality?  You're reading a whole lot into what I said.  Morality has nothing to do with it.  I mentioned 2 things and 2 things only about the "You Suck!" chant:

- Lack of class

- Lack of creativity

....both of which are amoral.  You're the one trying to have an ethics discussion here, not me.

So as I undertsand it people don't like this cheer because it's unoriginal and they simply want the cheers to be unique like hockey? Do you mean the hockey cheers we basically stole from Cornell's hockey student section? Those cheers?

(You suck x 9) is original enough for me. I don't know any other school that does it. Sure it could be improved. I suggested something like "defense-suck, defense suck" or "defense-sieve, defense-sieve" in a similar style to what's done at hockey games. But Temptation is going to play, so it's gotta mesh with the band. Better than doing something that 1,000 other schools already do, like, I don't know, throwing up your keys on a "key play" (aka any third down).

Ok, ok. In all honesty, weather you love it or hate it, this chant wont go away. Do I personally hate it? No. Do I think its silly sometimes when its an obv. "going on 4th" situation? Sure, why not. But can I change it? Nope! Leave it as is imo.It already has become a ritual.

As someone who frequents seating by the student section, Its just another cheer. It's sports, it comes with the territory. We say "Let's Go Blue!" so many times, it's kind of a nice change. All the students are doing is asserting our dominance over another team. (probably in the most arrogant and simplistic way possible [as posted above])

To each their own.  If the students want to chant that then that's their right.  However it does become trashy when we're down by 20 in the past couple years and the students continue to chant it.  I don't understand that part of it.  WIth Michigan supposed to be one of the most classy institutions in the world it's hard to tell at a football game.
