Re. "You Suck!"
Re. the "You Suck!" at the end of the 3rd down stop version of Temptation, can we please please please stop it?
It's seriously trashy and classless, totally unbefitting the caliber of institution that Michigan is. Maybe a difference in the way they are mic'ing crowd noise this year, but I noticed it more prominently than usual during the game on Saturday, and am noticing it a lot as I watch the game again right now.
I don't know if this is exclusively a student section thing or the whole stadium saying it. But, whoever it is, stop. You're embarrassing yourselves and Michigan. Come up with something more clever / less trashy.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:29 AM ^
It sounded to me like a student section thing and I could barely hear it in section 19.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:33 AM ^
Gotcha. Like I said, might have to do with the mic'ing, but on TV you can hear it very distnctly.
Now that we know it's the students.....
Students: Please stop. You're better than that. You don't go to Maryland, you go to Michigan.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:36 AM ^
Recent former student here, and...
You Suck.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:44 AM ^
Wow, you have internet access in your trailer park?
September 8th, 2010 at 1:49 AM ^
I think it's pretty trashy and classless to belittle other academic institutions
September 8th, 2010 at 2:00 AM ^
I'm guessing this is in reference to my Maryland comment?
I'm not belittling Maryland as an academic institution, but it's a well know fact that many of their fans and student section are trashy and classless, coming up with classy originals such as chanting "Fuck you, J.J.!" and making comments about his younger sister (who was a high school student at the time.)
"You suck!" is something they chant. It's trashy, classless, and not clever at all. Michigan fans shouldn't stoop to that level.
September 8th, 2010 at 2:01 AM ^
You're grouchy
September 8th, 2010 at 8:27 AM ^
no other response. This is absolute awesome.

You're making Maryland sound like a lot of fun.

I've completely adjusted to the new formatting of the board, but I still get a little upset that you can't read your whole username. I honestly laugh every time I see it.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:36 AM ^
Same with reading your quote. Not gonna lie, I used it for a status on the face books.
September 8th, 2010 at 8:37 AM ^
*gets on high horse, scans lawn* I think it's friggin' lame to have organized chants that belittle the other team, especially for U-M fans to chant, "You suck!" Last time I checked, we're the ones who suck, unfortunately. Also, it reminds me of those nerds from Duke jumping around at Cameron like a bunch of dorks for some reason. I'm all in favor of booing officials, but the contrived "you suck" chant at the football games is just plain stupid and embarrassing. It's not clever, and it makes our fans look like a bunch of pussies, honestly. That chant makes me think of that pharmacist panty-waist character from "Family Guy," all safe in the stands, secure in anonymity.
PS -- I did take part in the "f*ck the Seminoles" chant back in '91. I also full-heartedly support the nastiness that occurs at Yost, especially after my experience at the Wisconsin outdoor hockey game this year. I also think that this chant, witnessed at a WVU vs. Maryland football game was fine too:
Go back to the woods, go back to the woods
You're mom is your sister, and your football team no good.
Go Blue, and class up, kids.

Yawwwwwwwwwn.
September 8th, 2010 at 8:58 AM ^
Nice response -- I know it's tough being a student when the team has been horrible, but if you're unaware of the reputation that you current students sport because of your snivelly little "you suck" cheer, you should re-evaluate how others perceive you. I'd like to be part of a fan base that's respected, not laughed at. Good luck finding a job, punk.

September 8th, 2010 at 9:41 AM ^
wow, living in Iowa must suck. Nice job projecting.
I will have no prob finding a job after I defend my doctoral thesis this spring.
News flash, the football fan base is already being laughed at for being a wine and cheese crowd. The hockey student section with all of its intensity and god forbid unclassy cheers is actually the most respected student section in college hockey and at this university. It is about time the football student section start borrowing some grit from the hockey student section. This is not the 1920's anymore.
oh, I forgot, yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnn
September 8th, 2010 at 9:42 AM ^
OK, Doctor Phil -- I didn't say anything to defend the "wine and cheese" reputation at football, and I didn't say anything negative about Yost. All I am saying is that "you suck" is lame and unoriginal. Chanting "you suck" certainly doesn't inspire me or I'm sure 95% of the rest of the fanbase to cheer louder for U-M.
Good luck with your thesis, and Go Blue!
PS -- living in Iowa is awesome. We don't have a stoplight in my whole county, and all the Hawkeyes hate me.
September 8th, 2010 at 10:13 AM ^
I think the whole "you suck" cheer comes down to a practicality issue. With ~50% of the student section being a combination of drunk and/or sorority girls that don't care about what is going on the field or learning complicated cheers like at Yost (I am not saying every sorority girls is liike this), stupid and simple cheers like "You suck" will fluorish. I wish the Michigan football student section could be like the hockey student section.
Go Blue!
I was only kidding about Iowa. I was actually looking at Iowa St for grad school since the physics department at Iowa St has a great biophotonics research program. You have no idea how much I wish the traffic in Ann Arbor was like that in Iowa, especially around 5pm here.

Ok - interesting.
All Hawkeye fans hate you - Priceless.
Welcome to MGoBlog!
I must admit that when the whole "You suck" thing started I thought it was kind of clever. No it's just kind of snarky.
I agree - cheer like there's no tomorrow for your team. Leave the snarky lines to MSU< OSU and Illinois.

Seriously, what are you getting your doctorate in?
Edit: Ah, physics. Science people and humanities people never do see eye to eye.

he meant former student from Michigan... not tOSU.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:55 AM ^
current student here
YOU SUCK!
now get off my lawn. Good luck getting 20,000 students to stop chanting it from atop of your pedestal.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:48 PM ^
Also a current student and I agree 100%. I would like to see how loud the stadium would be if not for us.
To the OP, get over it. You aren't going to change anything about it. At least we aren't chanting 'F*** You State' like at the hockey games.
September 8th, 2010 at 3:44 PM ^
Here's the thing. It's such a lame chant that it will never be picked up on by the alums. So do you really want to chant something that's only audible in one corner of the stadium? That's not real intimidating.
Come up with something better. Why is it that our student hockey fans are original and creative, while our football student fans can't think of anything better than jangling keys and chanting "You suck"?
September 9th, 2010 at 9:56 AM ^
First off, the logistics of coordinating 20,000 people, most of whom are hammered, is vastly more difficult than coordinating 1,000 people. Second, nearly all of the people at the hockey games are actually paying attention to the game and are knowledgeable about what is going on. Everyone in the rink can hear when one or two people start a chant, and it will catch on if it is a good one. The same cannot be said of football.
September 9th, 2010 at 9:49 AM ^
The Stadium would be just as loud, till the students actually show up.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:31 AM ^
Perhaps those pesky students could politely raise their voices in chorus pointing out the failure of the opposing team to achieve a first down by stating unequivocally: "We don't care for the way you play!"
September 8th, 2010 at 11:23 AM ^
A hearty, "Good day to you, sir!" sufficed.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:24 AM ^
We aren't better people then people who attend Maryland bc we go to Michigan so lets not act like it. You suck!
September 8th, 2010 at 2:16 PM ^
^^Reading comprehension fail^^
A lot of people on this thread have read a lot into my comments that just isn't there.
Where did I say that people who attend Michigan are better than people who attend Maryland?
What's that?
Crickets?
Oh that's right.... because I didn't say that.
The you suck chant is neither classy nor creative, bottom line. My post was about a certain behavior (the "you suck" chant) not about a certain group of people being better than another group. Don't get it twisted.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:57 AM ^
But what if they do really suck?
September 8th, 2010 at 8:15 AM ^
It is a stupid chant, but its not going anywhere. The only chance of it going away is if the band stops playing the song.
September 8th, 2010 at 9:13 AM ^
people not in the student section don't necessarily know the chant goes with the song. They just hear 'you suck!' It's just normal student stuff - better to chant that than nothing at all - I'm glad the students are into it and having a good time. However, when Michigan's losing, or having a bad year, screaming 'you suck' -well, sucks. It seriously makes many (most?) MIchigan fans (not just the geriatric set) shake their heads. Very buckeye-ish. While I'm at it, shaking your keys for a 'key play' is the most lame thing I've ever seen. I'd rather hear 'you suck!' than that.

I remember this as a football thing. There's a clear "Goalie" "Sieve" (while pointing) thing going on during Temptation in the hockey crowd.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:43 AM ^
Don't try to pass this off as some time-honored tradition. I had student season tickets from 1998-2002 and definitely never heard it in the student section then. I also had tickets in 2005 when I was in grad school, and I don't remember ever hearing it then either. This has come around sometime since then.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:50 AM ^
It was around 2003-2005.
EDIT: I'm saying I heard it then. I don't know exactly when it began.
September 8th, 2010 at 1:50 AM ^
September 8th, 2010 at 7:46 AM ^
The first time I remember hearing the chant was in 2005 against Penn State. It probably had something to do with the 400 or so odd PSU students causing a ruckus in the middle of the student section.
September 8th, 2010 at 8:12 AM ^
My seats are next to the student section and have been since 2003, it was being done then.
September 8th, 2010 at 8:18 AM ^
I believe it started in the 2003 season, but only as a "you suck" at the VERY END of the chant. And not everyone was doing it. People at the time were still debating what exactly to do with their fist whether it be "the chop", "the claw", or "the rock". Sometime after I moved away in the 2004 season or beyond it must have evolved to a "you suck" for the entirety of the chant. And my soul died a little that day.
I agree with the OP that its classless, but the only way to stop it is by refusing to do it yourself. Or if RR and the team asked the student section to stop. That might work.
