Re. the "You Suck!" at the end of the 3rd down stop version of Temptation, can we please please please stop it?

It's seriously trashy and classless, totally unbefitting the caliber of institution that Michigan is.  Maybe a difference in the way they are mic'ing crowd noise this year, but I noticed it more prominently than usual during the game on Saturday, and am noticing it a lot as I watch the game again right now.

I don't know if this is exclusively a student section thing or the whole stadium saying it.  But, whoever it is, stop.  You're embarrassing yourselves and Michigan.  Come up with something more clever / less trashy.

I'm guessing this is in reference to my Maryland comment?

I'm not belittling Maryland as an academic institution, but it's a well know fact that many of their fans and student section are trashy and classless, coming up with classy originals such as chanting "Fuck you, J.J.!" and making comments about his younger sister (who was a high school student at the time.)

"You suck!" is something they chant.  It's trashy, classless, and not clever at all.  Michigan fans shouldn't stoop to that level.

*gets on high horse, scans lawn*  I think it's friggin' lame to have organized chants that belittle the other team, especially for U-M fans to chant, "You suck!"  Last time I checked, we're the ones who suck, unfortunately.  Also, it reminds me of those nerds from Duke jumping around at Cameron like a bunch of dorks for some reason.  I'm all in favor of booing officials, but the contrived "you suck" chant at the football games is just plain stupid and embarrassing.  It's not clever, and it makes our fans look like a bunch of pussies, honestly.  That chant makes me think of that pharmacist panty-waist character from "Family Guy," all safe in the stands, secure in anonymity.

PS -- I did take part in the "f*ck the Seminoles" chant back in '91.  I also full-heartedly support the nastiness that occurs at Yost, especially after my experience at the Wisconsin outdoor hockey game this year.  I also think that this chant, witnessed at a WVU vs. Maryland football game was fine too:

Go back to the woods, go back to the woods

You're mom is your sister, and your football team no good.

Go Blue, and class up, kids.

Nice response -- I know it's tough being a student when the team has been horrible, but if you're unaware of the reputation that you current students sport because of your snivelly little "you suck" cheer, you should re-evaluate how others perceive you.  I'd like to be part of a fan base that's respected, not laughed at.  Good luck finding a job, punk.

wow, living in Iowa must suck. Nice job projecting.

I will have no prob finding a job after I defend my doctoral thesis this spring.

News flash, the football fan base is already being laughed at for being a wine and cheese crowd. The hockey student section with all of its intensity and god forbid unclassy cheers is actually the most respected student section in college hockey and at this university. It is about time the football student section start borrowing some grit from the hockey student section.  This is not the 1920's anymore.

oh, I forgot, yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnn

OK, Doctor Phil -- I didn't say anything to defend the "wine and cheese" reputation at football, and I didn't say anything negative about Yost.  All I am saying is that "you suck" is lame and unoriginal.  Chanting "you suck" certainly doesn't inspire me or I'm sure 95% of the rest of the fanbase to cheer louder for U-M.

Good luck with your thesis, and Go Blue!

PS -- living in Iowa is awesome.  We don't have a stoplight in my whole county, and all the Hawkeyes hate me.

I think the whole "you suck" cheer comes down to a practicality issue. With ~50% of the student section being a combination of drunk and/or sorority girls that don't care about what is going on the field or learning complicated cheers like at Yost (I am not saying every sorority girls is liike this), stupid and simple cheers like "You suck" will fluorish. I wish the Michigan football student section could be like the hockey student section.

Go Blue!

I was only kidding about Iowa. I was actually looking at Iowa St for grad school since the physics department at Iowa St has a great biophotonics research program. You have no idea how much I wish the traffic in Ann Arbor was like that in Iowa, especially around 5pm here.

Here's the thing.  It's such a lame chant that it will never be picked up on by the alums.  So do you really want to chant something that's only audible in one corner of the stadium?  That's not real intimidating.

Come up with something better.  Why is it that our student hockey fans are original and creative, while our football student fans can't think of anything better than jangling keys and chanting "You suck"?

First off, the logistics of coordinating 20,000 people, most of whom are hammered, is vastly more difficult than coordinating 1,000 people.  Second, nearly all of the people at the hockey games are actually paying attention to the game and are knowledgeable about what is going on.  Everyone in the rink can hear when one or two people start a chant, and it will catch on if it is a good one.  The same cannot be said of football.

^^Reading comprehension fail^^

A lot of people on this thread have read a lot into my comments that just isn't there.

Where did I say that people who attend Michigan are better than people who attend Maryland?

What's that?

Crickets?

Oh that's right....  because I didn't say that.

The you suck chant is neither classy nor creative, bottom line.  My post was about a certain behavior (the "you suck" chant) not about a certain group of people being better than another group.  Don't get it twisted.

people not in the student section don't necessarily know the chant goes with the song. They just hear 'you suck!' It's just normal student stuff - better to chant that than nothing at all - I'm glad the students are into it and having a good time. However, when Michigan's losing, or having a bad year, screaming 'you suck' -well, sucks. It seriously makes many (most?) MIchigan fans (not just the geriatric set) shake their heads. Very buckeye-ish. While I'm at it, shaking your keys for a 'key play' is the most lame thing I've ever seen. I'd rather hear 'you suck!' than that.

Don't try to pass this off as some time-honored tradition.  I had student season tickets from 1998-2002 and definitely never heard it in the student section then.  I also had tickets in 2005 when I was in grad school, and I don't remember ever hearing it then either.  This has come around sometime since then.

I believe it started in the 2003 season, but only as a "you suck" at the VERY END of the chant.  And not everyone was doing it.  People at the time were still debating what exactly to do with their fist whether it be "the chop", "the claw", or "the rock".  Sometime after I moved away in the 2004 season or beyond it must have evolved to a "you suck" for the entirety of the chant.  And my soul died a little that day.

I agree with the OP that its classless, but the only way to stop it is by refusing to do it yourself.  Or if RR and the team asked the student section to stop.  That might work.
