Rating M's recruiting by offers: Poggi #1. EDIT. Dawson checks in at 3

Many posters say they put more credence in offers to a recruit rather than Star Rankings. Using this criteria, the number one recruit in the 2013 class is Henry Poggi, followed closely by Logan Tuley-Tillman. Updated with David Dawson checking in at 3. Lack of a Rivals reported ND offer, keeps Dawson behind Poggi and LTT.

Some players such as Shane Morris and Jourdan Lewis suffer the consequences of committing early and not getting as many offers as they otherwise would.

Here is a list of my unassailable rankings based on offers per Rivals. Following the rankings will be a list of each recruit and his, IMO, top 5 offers. Feel free to click on each and every recruit and check out his complete offer list on your own.

If a player had less than 5 offers, I listed all offers. in the case of poor Scott Sypniewski, he had no offers other than M. Poor kid will have to get by with a Michigan education.

I noticed that as well. You don't see the currently elite programs like Bama, Oregon, etc. but Stanford, Wisco and Iowa immediately stuck out to me as teams who have had very good TE play recently and TE's are extensively used in their offenses so you know they are looking for guys they feel are true "impact" players at the position.

Looking at Poggi's offer list (I'm always a little skeptical of these lists, btw), I am surprised that he isn't getting more "love" from UM fans. That is a d@mn strong (apologies to Les Miles) offer list.

I may have said it differently, bit what stood out most to me is how amazing our recruiting has been with respect to linemen and defense generally, and how poor our recruiting has been at rb and WR.

I like our recruits, don't get me wrong, but we really do need to start reeling in some top skill guys.

Nice work.

It'd be interesting to see how some of these guys' offer sheets would have filled out had they stayed uncommitted longer. Jourdan Lewis, for instance, would have a helluva lot more offers than just Toledo if he were uncommitted right now. Same for Channing Stribling.

Yeah, this is a very cool post, but you really can't compare the offer lists of kids who commit at different times and live in different parts of the country.  Obviously, like the OP says, kids like Jourdan Lewis and Shane Morris would have received many more elite offers if they had stayed uncommitted longer.  On the other hand, a lot of pretty middling recruits get elite offers later on after programs miss on their top choices.

There's also a geographic component to this.  Bryan Mone probably would have all kinds of offers from elite programs right now if he were playing football in Florida or Ohio.  In a place like Utah, it's hard to get exposure (and get coaches to come to your games), and many will assume that you're unlikely to go so far from home for college.

Anyway, I like this post, but I think it's more interesting as a snapshot than informative as a cross-recruit comparison or ranking.

Thank you for taking the time to put this together, Gordie.

It really does put things in perspective when you can see, in no uncertain terms, that we've been winning recruiting battles with the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Stanford and others. It is a compliment to the current coaching staff on many levels.

A big tip of the hat, both for your idea and taking the time to execute it. Count me among those people who've often thought that offers were a better barometer than stars.

While we all know that certain schools have a good history at certain positions, I think it is fair to say that most of us have a school or two whose opinions we respect in general. I'm always happy (JMO) to snag anyone high on LSU's hit parade. And of course, Wisconsin and Penn State for linemen and the blue collar positions, USC for the skill positions.

Which programs out there are other posters impressed by ?

I do like this a lot and feel this should be the most effective way to rank players. The only issue is that some guys aren't entirely honest about who has offered them. Like Jeremy Jackson.

Not that I loved Rich Rod less, but that I loved Michigan more.

I don't follow recuriting so much that I recall all the schools that offer the guys we are high on. But, taking a quick look at some of those lists, and Tennessee showed up as offering a pretty good portion of our committs.  Is that normal/surprising to anyone else?  I'm surprised to see UT offering that many MI/OH/PA/ILL kids.  There's probably a really simple reason like an assistant coach with B1G roots, but I just didn't realize an SEC school would be offering so many of the guys we are also going for in the B1G.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I'm guessing Tennessee is not too happy that Michigan won nearly all of their head-to-head recruiting battles. I've heard that the sale of UM jerseys has begun spreading south from Ohio to Tennessee.

Good point about the early commits. Jourdan Lewis, for example. All sites list Michigan and Toledo as his only offers but I remember reading that Nick Saban told him he is one of the top ten players in the country or something. I think Lewis is also playing the Shane game by not reporting all the offers he gets.

I work with a coach from Pickerington, where Jake Butt plays. An interesting tidbit. Jones use to live there too. This coach raves about Jones's athleticism. States he could play multiple positions offensive and defensive. Of course it's been a couple years since he has seen him play. I would expect there has been remarkable improvement. This coach is high on him, and he's use to coaching high level talent.

I don't think that's really true at all. Ole Miss has a lot of momentum in the south right now. If you look through Auburn's class last year, outside of Shane Callahan, Kozan, and Diamond, all of their elite players are coming from Florida-Georgia-Tennessee-Alabama. They just cast a wide net, and when you have momentum with your recruiting, that pays dividends.
