Ranking the top 5 Michigan football commits of the Brady Hoke era

Submitted by Cold War on

Remember when Derrick Green committed to Michigan in January? And how it was kind of a big deal, because the Wolverines had never signed a No. 1 tailback in the modern recruiting era?

That was supposed to be a one-of-a-kind commitment.

Then Michigan got another program-changing commit in April from Drake Harris, who will become the best-ranked receiver to join the Wolverines if he signs next year... http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2013/05/poll_which_brady_hoke_recruit.html

at SDSU and was told they had no scholarship for him. There were a number of schools that passed on him because of Hoke's comments about being the "most unorthodox player he's ever seen." But he is also the first to say his on field performance at this level is incredible. Let's face it, Jake, like most of the very good to great, use a lot of instinct and may not line up exactly where they're supposed to be, have the correct foot planted forward, etc. His results are very surprising. I sure hope he heals quickly. One of the best "to the ball" players I've seen in awhile.

Green - Dire need of a power RB with skill; Peppers - Game changing CB; Kalis - He will be an All-American for two yrs; Drake Harris - WR another position of need at the skilled position; Dymonte Thomas - Nickel he will play immediately and start for 3-4 yrs

I would have to go with:

1. Morris/Thomas (hard to seperate these.....I know it's cheating, but it helped set the standard for that class)

2. Peppers

3. Green

4. Kalis

5. Harris

Although I'm not sure Morris or Thomas will prove to be the players that Green and Peppers might be, I think their pledges solidified Hoke and his staff as a clear deviation from RR's recruiting.

1. Shane Morris due to his recruiting ability

2. Derrick Green by breaking the ice on a top 10 recruit

3. Jabrill Peppers due to him being the actual best recruit Michigan has has in awhile, possibly ever (by rankingings)

4. Kyle Kalis - snagged from OSU

5. Ondre Pipkins because I have a feeling he will be a top DT in college football.

Not discounting.  I consider Shane Morris to be a pioneer of player recruiting.  With social media being where it is, he's definitely the first extremely outspoken and public recruit that was recruiting.  That I know of...

He set the bar for other recruits, including Ferns and Peppers.

This is definitely the winning list IMO.  Although possibly a slighly different order.  Someone on many lists is slightly overrated, and by EOY rankings, it will show.

These 5 are BIG, BIG, BIG time lands, for different and additinoal reasons besides being absolute elite studs.

But I am far more interested in what they do on the field. I get what you are looking for but lets be honest, a 5* kid who does nothing on the field is far worse than a 3* who rocks it. Kelvin Grady is a perfect example.

I mean given none of his uber-highly-touted guys have really played at all we can only go by rankings right?  That would seem to suggest something like:

1) Peppers

2) Green

3) Kalis

4) Morris

5) Harris

Sidenote, I was just watching the rerun of the Georgia - MSU bowl game on B1G network (yes I hate the NBA and yes I'm going through serious CFB withdrawal right now) and the thought that Bell was probably like a poor man's Derrick Green popped into my head.  Wouldn't that be nice?

Morris, Speight, Ferns - For their top-notch tweeting and recruiting.

Peppers, Taco, and Butt - They have fantastic names.

Ross and Pipkins - For seeing the field.

Peppers, Green, Kalis, Pipkins, Thomas. You could rerank them a couple different ways but since they're still mostly unproven the rankings hype stacks them this way.
*honorable mention to Countess, Morris, the Funchise, Ross, Harris, Norfleet, and Epic Sparty Troll of the Century Lawrence Marshall

1. Kyle Kalis - Huuge steal from Ohio, sort of cemented the staffs awesomeness in recruiting

2. Jabrill Peppers - the start of another step up in recruiting?

3. Derrick Green - obviously

4. Shane Morris - obviously

5. Dymonte Thomas - Another huge steal from Ohio. Even if he never was really an Ohio lean, he's just a huge steal from the state

Honorable Mention. Patrick Kugler. As David Molk taught us, a great center is both unnoticed and invaluable
