Rank your Fanhood.

Submitted by Smoothitron on

I thought it might be interesting to see how people weigh their loyalties to the various teams they follow.

If you want something a little more concrete, rank the teams you follow in order of how happy you would be if they won a championship.  I'm thinking specifically pro and college big 4 sports teams, but feel free to throw in national teams or non-revenue sports teams as well if that's your bag.

For me:

1.  Michigan Basketball

Spending the late 90s and early 00s as the only UM basketball fan in my school was tough, but that makes the current success that much better.

2a. Indiana Pacers

Indiana kid's gonna Indiana.  I spend about 5 minutes as part of my morning routine seething about the fact Reggie Miller(and Austin Croshere) never got a ring, but I have that slight disdain for pro sports holding be back from calling them #2 alone.

2b. Michigan Football

I had the great pleasure of getting into sports right after UM won the football title in 97, so I haven't gotten the good pleasure of enjoying a championship as it happened.

4. Indianapolis Colts

Of course the team I care least about is the only one that has won a championship while I've been following them.  All hail St. Peyton.  All hail St. Andrew.

5. Any team representing the USA in international competition.

U-S-A, U-S-A!!!

Share yours so that I know who to downvote reflexively if you like teams that I don't.

Michigan Football

Red Wings

Michigan Basketball

Lions

Michigan Hockey

Tigers

Pistons

Back when the Pistons were good I'd put them above the Tigers.

1. UM football

2. UM basketball

3. Indianapolis Colts

4. Indiana Pacers

5. US National Teams

Pacers probably would have been higher than the Colts back in the Reggie days, but I, like a lot of Hoosiers, didn't support the Pacers as strongly after the Brawl at the Palace.  I still watched and rooted for them, but it was pretty painful (like UM football recently).

Because the CWS predates the WCWS and they liked the college world series name, I'm guessing.

You have to look kind of closely, but here are NCAA trophies showing, MBB, WBB, softball and baseball, with gender on the basketball trophies but absent for bat sports.

You'll see the same thing on the NCAA website or any press release out of MGoBlue (or wherever else). On MGoBlue the title of the team's page shows this as well.

I kind of feel sorry for fans when they come here and hear "so and so screwed us almost 20 years ago" but jeez, Fulmer. And his vote against us in 97. And his whining about Woodson winning the Heisman. And the "we have the biggest stadium" ploy-- for what--6 games? Don't get into a capital expansion competition with the University of Michigan. You'll lose. And orange is a nasty color.

"So is" Duke/M bball - but when they aren't playing each other (which is decidedly seldom) I root for the Duke boys. Can't help where my family is from/schooled. Family has been in Tennessee way before Phat Phil and my dad had UM/DU degrees before the Fab Five.

Not the same thing at all. It's one thing for a team to fairly beat another team (Duke/M bball), but it's quite another for the coach of one team to throw a tantrum because his player didn't win an award and blatantly screw the other team as a result. One is simply winning, and the other is being a little bitch. Fuck Tennessee.

3 and 4 are probably interchangable. I love me some tigers so it is weird putting them so low.

1 - M Football

2 - USAMNT (soccer, US Men's National Team for those who don't know)

3 - Michigan Basketball

After that there's a pretty big drop off for me. Any of those top 3 make me go delirious with joy when they win championships.

4 - Pistons

5 - Tigers

6 - Red Wings

7 - USWNT

8 - Any D1 or pro team, or Olympic sport, that I have a former student currently playing on/in

Any of those win a championship, I'm super happy, I buy merchandise, I celebrate, dance in the living room, smile for two weeks straight, etc. Then there's another pretty big dropoff.

9 - M Softball

10a - Ajax

10b - Arsenal

12 - Any M non-revenue sport

13 - Any American in any esport, but esp RTS or MOBA

14 - Anyone playing Notre Dame or Ohio State in a championship game

Any of those 9-14 win, I'm like Cool, I'm glad that happened, and I read/watch the coverage even more than usual.

this is the list of a dbag that I know: Dook Basketball NY Yankees Dallas Cowboys This insufferable POS went to Maryland and is the guy holding up the sign "JJ is Ridiculous" to which a guy on his dorm floor help up the "-ly gay" sign next to it. After the officials fucked the Lions last year when they missed the blatant PI at the end of the game I posted something about it on facebook. This POS actually started responding to all my Detroit friends comments calling us poor losers and telling us it was not a PI. Naturally I unfriended him that night. I wish I hadn't so I could have reminded him of the catch rule that went against Dez Bryant.
