Here's a little word of advice - never, I repeat NEVER, eat bad oranges . . . they'll make your tongue burn, your lips feel slimy, and then a couple hours later, you'll have brutal vomiting.  Trust me on this one.

I have never heard Shannon mention w/r/t the M DC job anywhere other than on these discussion boards.  Aside from fans saying, "hey, maybe we could get Mike Ditka" to be our next HC type statements, I have never heard Shannon mention for M by anyone in the media, anyone with any inside info, anyone with any ties to the program, etc.

And, personally, I could care less where he goes.  He may be a good guy and the type of person that can clean up a troubled program (in terms of off the field issues), but I don't think that he is a great coach.

I'm a little gun shy on failed HCs as DCs right now.  Also Miami played in the ACC which is not exactly a strong conference right now.  Second weakest BCS conference IMHO.

Although if we're keeping RR he'd likely fit well / supplement RR's Florida ties.

I see your point about "failed HCs," though I wouldn't necessarily call Shannon a failure, nor would I dismiss his DC resume.  Most of his years as Miami's DC were when they were in the old Big East (before Miami, BC, and VT bolted for the ACC), when that was still a decent conference.  While I can't speak to the state of Miami's D before he assumed control (I am assuming pretty good), he kept right on trucking, and had a defense ranked in the top 10 four times.

Greg Robinson as a DC he is not.

Possibly because we still have a DC? DC is much less interesting to talk about for ESPN and the such so they aren't going to talk about it. Hell I haven't heard them talking about replacing Gerg with anyone yet, so I guess SHannon is as much of a candidate as anyone. They will continue to talk about RR until he is fired or Brandon says he will stay. Only then will they move on to DC, again until he is fired or until RR says he is staying. Don't kid yourself, if he's available, he's a candidate. I don't think he will be available by that time though. Someone will pick him up.

Brian Cook made the most fervent plea for Shannon as Michigan DC that I've read, in this week's TWIS:

God. Now I have that awful Mike and the Mechanics song stuck in my head. Why am I ten years old listening to dad radio again? THIS IS RANDY SHANNON'S FAULT. [Please be our defensive coordinator. Please.]

So that counts for something more than our inane rabble on the MGoBoards.

way to make a statement for the new coach, especially since Lane Kiffin has yet to prove his bona fides as a coach, but has the USC halo around him. What does the MN coach have to lose?

A game that USC shouldn't overlook if Minnesota can get the right coach. Just ask Iowa.

I don't mind Randy Shannon, I think he has a great story and he's done a decent job at Miami (but didn't live up to Miami standards.)  Players love him/can connect with him, but I still think Minnesota should take a chance on a guy like Leach.

Iowa = USC.  A team swooning because they have just lost a series of games where they did not perform well..., hmmm.  Well, USC DID just lose...at home...to ND...after already being manhandled by, wait for it, wait for it...OSU! On the road no less, again! S-o-o-o-o, maybe you're right after all. That is all.

As for the OSU loss on the road bit...while true, sorry, too soon.

I am also equally interested in the Minnesota job.  Somebody please start a thread so the board can begin discussing the pros and cons of my candidacy and what the Minnesota AD thinks about me.

I will be a welcome break from the RR discussions.

On the other hand, a stronger conference is (in the big picture) better for the Big Ten as a whole. A rejuvenated Minnesota would give the Big Ten a more defined footprint in CFB. Also, man, at some point you have to feel for a battered fanbase. They're third in Big Ten titles behind OSU and Michigan, and to see where they are today...

I think they could use a break.

Not that it will be the deciding factor, but I wonder? I think Tony Dungy was approached by Minnesota for the job, and while declining, has mentioned that he would like to see more talented African-American coaches get a shot at head coaching gigs in CFB. Perhaps (if he likes Shannon) Shannon can get a recommendation from him? A good connection to have with a pretty amazing alumnus.

He'd be a great pick-up if Minnesota can afford him; the expectations are much more humble than at The U, and he was a great recruiter. Also, kept his players out of legal trouble (at the U!) and graduating; a fine choice. The Big Ten would get that much stronger if he makes it in; hope they pull the trigger on it!

He would be a nice coach for Minnesota.  Developing players off the field is very high on his priority list, and if he came close to the W-L record he had at Miami, he would be considered very successful.  He would never embarass the program, and I doubt that many of his players would, either.

Minny is perfect if he wants to coach there for four years and get fired again because he cant compete with the conference.  He should accept a DC spot and take a break from the HC spot light.
