2.To the people who earlier asked "why do we fire RR but give Beilein an extension?"...today is why. Likely two post seasons in 3 years. Despite last seasons shocking regression, they exceeded expectations (again twice in 3 years) and swept an in state rival in doing so.
3. I noticed Beileins extension goes until 2015-2016 season. We know he isn't "young" so I'm wondering what the next five years holds. Does he have five more years left in him? Will one of the assistants be heir apparent? Coach Meyer is no spring chicken, but Alexander and Jackson are young...might they be our future?
Just thinking tonight how it feels like the program has finally gone over the hump and after 2-3 more years should be stable. I'm wondering what Beilein's legacy will be, and if he'll develop a coaching tree, or if we'll have to roll the dice again.
Yeah. Good for JB. Gotta love him. In fairness, though, when the team is playing badly, it looks BAD (or, as Kalin might say, bad-bad) -- like a bunch of intramural guys standing around the perimeter, lobbing up bricks. We saw a lot of that last season.

<br>But, boy, once thing click, they're sure fun to watch. Given the team's youth, the lulls should be fewer and fewer long lulls. Especially if we can land a little more size, to keep the d honest.

I'm going to agree with the sentiment here. People were chomping at the bit for Beilein's head a few weeks ago when we were 1-6, but this team has given him all of the job security he needs at this point.

Define "good recruiting". Beilein has done an excellent job of finding guys that can operate within his system. However, if you mean in terms of pulling in some 5-stars, then yes there's work to be done.
I'll call 44 combined points from our three best freshmen today and call that tremendous recruiting.
Not to mention the heart that Novak exudes or the potential from the two guards coming in next year.
My point exactly. Smotrycz is a guaranteed redshirt in most other major-conference programs. In Beilein's system he can contribute right away.
False. Very, very few basketball players redshirt. The only reason Morgan and McLimas did was because one was hurt(Morgan) and the other was extremely, extremely overmatched physically(McLimas). Smotrycz is also the worst example you could point to complain about recruiting, since he was Beilein's highest rated recruit and a top 50 player according to Rivals. Belein's recruiting has improved every year he's been here. There is no room for any rational Michigan fan to complain about the recruiting based on what facilities he's been using.
I'm not complaining. I'm starting to think people just read half of a comment and assume the other half is what they want it to say. As for the redshirting, maybe he wouldn't have redshirted, but you can't honestly think he would be playing big minutes at Missouri, Clemson, UCLA, etc. He's a great fit for our system.
a likely 2nd or 3rd team All B10 sophomore guard, an all-Freshman team true freshman player in Hardaway jr, obvious contributors in Morgan (I'd put him in the top 7-8 freshman in the league this year) and Smot at 18-19 years old. Looks like very good players in Burke and Brundidge coming in, and Big Dawg's progeny signed up for 2012. Beyond his first real class with Novack and Stu (who I like but unlikely all B10 type players), I think recruiting has been very good.
He's not going to pull in Duke type recruiting classes. But if you want to build consistency, you bring in the guys who fit your system and as Coach B said, "ready to run through a wall for Michigan." He's done that. It's what Bo Ryan's done at Wisconsin. Some very good players sprinkled in with some system guys.
You want 5-star kids who are peaking around the corner to the NBA, you'll probably have success, too. That's another way to do it. But as a fan, I know I won't feel much of a connection to the John Wall's of the world. I don't begrudge those kids wanting to leave for the NBA. I'd just rather have great kids who develop into very good players.

Beilein will be 63 in 5 years. That would be unusually early for retirement. I think you meant Alexander and Jordan, Jackson's gone. Either one might make a good successor. I wouldn't be surprised to see them get other offers first.
Jordan, yes thanks for the correction. I think both he and Alexander have proven to be upgrades. I hope we can keep them both, but at least one to get a coaching tree going. I would love for Beilein to stay here as long as he wants, but another outside hire makes me nervous, it's always a gamble. I hope in the next 4 years Jordan or Alexander establish themselves as a successor, or that Beilein gets another extension.
Short of a health condition,which god willing will not happen, I don't see Beilein retiring until his early 70s at the earliest. He clearly lives for basketball and just loves this game.
Why did you have to bring RR into this discussion? He has nothing to do with Michigan or the basketball team. A more valid way to get your point across would have been something like "For those who wanted Beilein fired, here is why it didn't happen."

I am sorry, did not mean to "piss" on anything. I was actually an RR supporter, and to this day I wish it could have worked out.
The only reason I bring it up is because during those topics, I was frustrated with what I perceived as a lack of support for Beilein. I've loved Beilein since day 1 and have defended him amongst my friends and coworkers. So to me, it felt like some fans were throwing him under the bus to prove a point about RR.
Again, in no way did I mean to bring RR in to prove a point, it was just me venting some of my frustrations from months past.
UofM had only 6 turnovers today, in the biggest game of the year. They played with just the right mix of control and enthusiasm. Today was a coaching masterpiece.
Izzo, on the other hand, well, let's just say I lost a little more respect for him. Darius had it coming? FU Izzo.

played bball with him alot during the summer at the CCRB. Great guy. You would think he would have had an attitude, but always passed and was incredible supportive
Funny story. I was playing on his team when some lanky undergrad started talking some serious trash. LB took it in stride, until the kid got a serious attitude. The next few trips down the court, he backed him under the hoop and dunked on him. Kid shut up and everyone else simply lost it.
I think, re the recruiting discussion, JB just needs to attract more top-caliber big men. He's doing well with the guards and wings. He's come close on some blue-chip big, but not quite. Bigs don't see JB's system is ideal for the NBA. Hopefully, though, continued success and the new facilities will soon give M an edge. Ideally, the school would replace the arena. But improvements are better than nothing.
The whole point of the Beilein/facility improvement era is to get us to a point where we can attract any up and coming coach in the nation to want the job. If Beilein had been grooming someone for a decade, it'd be one thing, but a guy who'll have been a assistant at a major program for only 5 years is not what we need. Unless one of them proves to be a wunderkind during that time, but get us an established head coach who's ready for the big time.
