Just randomly discovered that if you do a Google search for "U", the University of Michigan homepage is the first result.
Eat it, 'Canes
I get the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Delaware as my first two. With "U" in Wikipedia bringing up third
EDIT: My guess is there is a locational bias to the search algorithm.
Google has admitted as much recently. They've also looked at putting an individual bias into search results based on prior search history, etc.
Is that why I get U Spot - Naughty Vixens of Uruguay as my first hit?
I get "suck"...bummer
but my boyfriend used to call me that and I'm not entirely sure why.
I get Britney Spears I'm a slave for U.. interesting..
they hate you.
I got Wiki for 'U'...Ernis, it was good while it lasted...
The Wikipedia article for the letter U is my first result.
Eat it, letter Y.
I also got the University of Michigan
Perhaps my result is biased because I am in the Grad Library.
No matter. I roll to disbelieve. *...* Success!
I get the Wiki entry for U, then the University of Washington and then Cultural Tourism DC
2. U - wiki
3. html tag
4. 4chan yuri board
I got the Wikipedia entry for U and then the Michigan home page.
I'm in SoCal, and I get U wiki, USC, UCSD, and U videos.
Regional bias exists here.
Yeah, Google is getting more and more into your personal computing habits in a borderline creepy way. I hope the government or terrorists hack into Google's servers. I might be in trouble.
Don't even ask.
1. U Florida
2. U wiki
3. U Michigan
Followed by the page of letter itself at Wikipedia, a page on the HTML code for "u", corresponding video results, the yuri board at 4chan*, random search thing with bad WOT ratings, the University of Utah, and the University of Minnesota, in that order.
*I DO NOT, nor will I EVER go to 4chan. I attribute its appearance on the page to my roommates, as we obviously all share the same connection.
Edit: I'm not sure if this counts, but actually the first "result" is a Google converter thing telling me that 1 Rack Unit is equal to 4.445 centimeters.
I don't get any universities until result #6 (Minnesota) and #7 (Utah).
Which throws the regional bias thing a bit, because I live in the Miami metro area.
in upstate NY.
University of Phoenix. From downtown Chicago.
Can Michigan schedule them for a non-conference game?
I love that some college teams play in stadia (yeah baby, Latin!) whose naming rights have been purchased - for example, Louisville plays in PapaJohn's Cardinal Stadium. Meanwhile, the University of Phoenix, which has no football team, HAS a football stadium. Awesome!
I get wiki page on uranium, then the letter U wiki page. I live in Knoxville, Oak Ridge (Manhattan Project) is about 20 miles away. Def. regional bias.
And I got Wiki U
html u tag
I don't get the U of M site until page 4.
Utah is my first result. Odd
How the hell did you find this out?
These types of things always astound me...
You don't want to know
Am I the only one who wonders what a Rack Unit is? 4.44500 Centimeters?
Sit down son. Your mother says you're old enough for you and I to have a little talk.
Hmm, I got:
-Video results, including something called "super junior u mv"
-Cal University of Pennsylvania.
So only the last one, being that I'm in western Pennsylvania, makes sense for the geographical bias bit.
I got University of Michigan first then wikipedia U
from Saint Louis I get Wiki "U", then UMich
...and USC comes up first. Certainly Google searches are geo-biased.
2) wiki U
3. United Airlines
I'm not buying the geo biased shit. I'm in northern michigan and got
Univeristy of Utah
Stanford I-Tunes U
Looked for first michigan site sixth page. Mgoblog is my home page and over half my top visited sites are directly related to Michigan (mostly sprots) pages.
I get www.sexualityandu.ca where I shall learn about my sexual well-being.
I get 'U Have AIDS'
Google filters results based on your search history.
I am actually bullshitting. But I bet they do.
notes in The World Is Flat that it is the job of some folks to figure out how to get their sites picked up the most quickliest by the Google search engine for given searches, and make adjustments accordingly. I'm sure that universities have folks whose daily goal is to do whatever is necessary to get their U as high in the "Google poll" as possible.
incorrect superlative form of quickly; compare to "more quicklier", the comparative form.
I getter the "letter U" ala Sesame Street...via Wikipedia of course
'U' Wikipedia page. The first school I get is the University of Utah, "U of U".
Nice, maybe we can start calling ourselves the U now.
I got Michigan too. After 1 Rack unit = 4.445 cm.
If you're referring to Miami then it's "Da U", which is the first site after you googlestalk that.
I got the ever-so-helpful " 1 Rack unit = 4.44500 centimeters," followed by "University of Michigan."
Regardless of the methodology, I fully agree that it's a lame nickname for Miami, and I never call them that.
