Quite OT - Best Burger in Minneapolis?

Submitted by Seth on
Anyone from Minneapolis, or who has been there for enough Gopher games, that can point us in the direction of a great pre-play-in-game burger? Preferably a spot that pours a damn good beer as well? And is near the stadium or UMinn campus (i.e. we probably can't get over to the Nook in St. Paul) Going there for the game (/brag) tomorrow, and have a couple of hours to kill before the festivities. Anything else a must-see there?

I'm partial to Maxwell's (12th and Washington) or Harry's (5th and Washington, though a little pricier) close to the Dome. Stub and Herb's has really good burgers if you're looking for somewhere on the UMn campus. As an aside, I'm still weighing whether I should go. I've been to 5 Min-Det games at the dome this year, and they've lost every one, some in amazingly frustrating fashion. I think I'm bad luck, and I really hate that place. And if they blow it, I'd rather just have my bourbon close and not have to talk to anyone. But, how often do you get to see your team clinch...

Best burger is a Juicy Lucy at Matt's Bar, at 3500 Cedar Avenue South.... http://www.mattsbar.com/ It's a little ways away from Metrodump, probably 10-15 dollar cab ride at most. Hubert's is also good - right next to the stadium, there is also Seven Corners which has a number of bars - about a 10 minute walk across 35 W (check out the new bridge). A must-see if you have the time - the cherry on a spoon at Walker Art Center, and the Mall of America, which is right on the light rail line (the light rail will dump you out right in front of either Metrodump or Mall of America).

But the Walker museum IME sucked. It could just be a function of my hatred for modern art but some of the pieces were horrible. I.E. room with projector playing a picture of a dead horse, a bunch of jars that had a guys nail filings, hair, etc, a dead bird inside a glass case on the floor, it was as awful as I'm making it. I really enjoyed the other art museum (Minneapolis Institute of Arts I think) and I also liked the science museum too (they had a thing on the Titanic that was pretty cool). But definitely check out the outdoor sculpture garden but stay outside.

Their specialty is the Juicy Lucy, which is cheese cooked inbetween two beef patties. The cheese pressurizes and becomes molten. Like Blimpy Burger, you'd be well-advised to leave your jacket in the car as you'll otherwise be carrying the smell the rest of the day.

try the Bulldog in NE Mpls - great burgers, great beer drinking spot - good people watching. From there, it is a straight shot down University to TCF Stadium. Edit: misread the msg - 10 minute cab ride at most to the Dome but on other side of the river

Matt's does have a really good burger, is pretty cheap and has a nice hole-in-the-wall local type atmosphere. I'd plan on getting there early though. It's a small place and I'm sure it will crowded tomorrow. Also make sure you bring cash since they don't take credit cards.

1) I agree with Maxwell's.... their burgers are decent, but I would recommend the homemade Mac N' Cheese w/chicken and the cheese fries with flavored sour cream. Friggin amazing. 2) Bulldog has really good Kobe beef burgers... lil' pricier, but good nonetheless. 3) I am a big fan of Bullwinkles in Seven Corners (on Washington Ave), they have great garlic burgers, where they hand make patties and put garlic, black pepper, and onions in the beef... the beer is pretty cheap and they have free popcorn. nnGet your burger with tator tots, yum. I frequented the place a lot in law school and grew to love it. 4) Townhall Brewery in Seven Corners. A local brewpub with really good food. Goat cheese nachos are awesome, mashed potato pizza is awesome, black n' blue burger is awesome (blue cheese), and the microbrew beer is great. I suggest the Oatmeal Stout beer... it's unreal. Also, it's across the street from Bullwinkle's, and within walking distance of the Dome.

Awesome, man! Thanks! We're friends with the guy at burgerconquest.com, who flipped out and screamed at us about the Jucy Lucy [sic], but I think we'll hit up the Townhall after for the pre-game beer. Thanks to everyone who posted (wolverine plusses all around) If anyone wants to meet us at Matt's around, say, 1:30 today, we shouldn't be hard to miss.

1) rudolph's barbeque (I think on Franklin just south of downtown; I used to go there as a kid and still for my money is one of the best barbque places I have been. I dont live in MN anymore and not sure if it is still there. 2)Burger Jones in calhoun village (just west of uptown accross the street from the NW corner of lake calhoun) is pretty good as well. I went there on a recent visit to my parents. Slow service. Awesome fries. Good burger. Parking was a bit of challenge.
