Seems odd that his dad wanted him to go to a Catholic school, but good for them. I just hope he has the skill to become a top player. He shows flashes of scoring ability, but he still has a long way to go in order to become a top big ten guard. I think he has a chance.
I think most parents would opt to send their kid to a private school that added morality to the education mix if they could.
I'd like to send my (hypothetical future) kids to a private school that DIDN'T add the "morality" to the class schedule. Part of your education is learning to deal with different people/cultures/viewpoints. And the "morality" education that people get before 21 has less to do with being a good person than it is a list of "don't do."
I'm not saying you can't get a world class education at a private or parochial school. But I am saying that it's less likely you come out of that school as a well rounded human being ready to deal with the real world.
lol!
Nothing says morality like the Crusades & the Inquisition!
I attended a Catholic school for a couple of years. I don't recall being encouraged to fight holy war.
I attended an all boys strict private prep school before Michigan. Great education. However, when people say they are going to send their kids to a private school to learn "morals and ethics", I laugh. If only parents knew what goes on at an all boys private school...lots of drinking, drugs, etc. A couple of years after me a student at my school shot and killed a public school friend over a girl and buried his body.
I'm taking my chances and sending my own kids to the local public schools. They are learning about kindness and respect in ways that were never taught to me. (although I learned them at home anyway).
I believe the article notes that MAAR is not a practicing Muslim.
I've been pleasantly surprised by MAAR this season. He makes a lot of effort plays, which I like, and he also handles the ball pretty well. I thought Dawkins would be ahead of him on the development curve at this point, but Dawkins is too inconsistent.
Another well-done Quinn article. I didn't know much about MAAR other than what I had seen on the court. Thanks for the find!
That was a great article. I appreciate well done long form journalism, and loved reading some of the back story of MAAR. Despite this disappointing season, I hope he continues to do well.
Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman. That's a name you can take a ride with.
This article was definitely worth the time to read - great story.
I like MAAR because when his shot isn't falling or if he sees an obvious opportunity to get a high percentage shot, he'll take the ball to the basket. At times this system looks like the laziest offense in sports.
We need more players with MAAR's mentality.
honestly, a guy like maar shouldn't be here YEAR 9 of beilein. great kid, but mac-level talent.
I don't agree with that. He's averaging nearly 10 points a game in Big Ten games and shoots almost 50%.
Is he a Five Star Recruit? Nope...but how many of those do we have on the roster?
10 ppg? that's not even top 40 in the conference.
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/conferences/statistics/playe…
So, only the top 40 scorers deserve to be in the conference? Each team gets less than 3 players? Sounds good.
if u want a team full of maars so be it; i just expect better for a university with this many resources
That's a failure in logic. Nobody said here that the team should be full of MAAR-like players. However, he is capable of being a starter or role player on a good team. Your complaint that he's not in the top 40 in scoring is pretty irrelevant.
it was perspective for what 10 ppg means
I don't think you're really enlightening anyone by telling us that 10 points/game isn't at the top of the heap.
skurmie seems to think it's pretty impressive...what you said is the point i was trying to make
I think compared to the other guys on the team, including guys like Irvin, Walton, Donnal, Doyle and Chatman, who were much more highly coveted coming out of high school, I think he's doing pretty well for a sophomore.
I think 10ppg is pretty decent especially when you seem to think he's no better than a MAC player. That's ridiculous. You don't average 10 a game and shoot 50% from the field in the Big Ten and deserve to get called a MAC player.
10 ppg. What we are missing is 1-2 with top ten stats. MAAR has done a nice job and should likely grow his game from here. I would like to see him eliminate a few defensive lapses.
But look at the stats on our team in Big Ten play through 3/5.
Walton 13 ppg (36% FG)
Irvin 13 ppg (40%)
Donnal 10.6 ppg (57%)
Robinson 10.1 ppg (39%)
MAAR 9.8 ppg (48%)
Dawkins 6.6 ppg (50%)
So, according to your argument, Robinson and Donnal should be in the MAC, too?
our team is god awful.
Best dribble penetrator on our team
that's not saying much...a lot of circus shots too
So, the best dribble penetrator on the team, and circus shots that go in. That's not good enough for you?
This is a time that I really wish I could use the neg feature. MAAR has probably been the most consistently efficient player on our team this season, and this is the guy you want to send to the MAC. Nice.
his other offers were from bucknell, george mason, rice, and robert morris....what does that tell you?
Doesn't tell you a damn thing. No major programs gave freakin Steph Curry the time of day, either.
So wrong. Guy is our best defender and is a legit dribble drive threat. He could play on any big ten team. Maybe he's not a starter on every team... yet. But he wasn't supposed to start for us either. Jeez man, get out here with that crap b

You're right he's a rotation player on every B1G team but I think Irvin has been the more consistent and focused defender this year.
He's an athletic 6'4 with damn good handle and can finish at the rim. Guys like that don't grow on trees. There's no one on this team that can get into the paint and finish through contact like he can. Outside Irvin and Lavert he's the guy on this team that has the best shot at the NBA. Though a year under Sanderson and Wagner may change my mind. I think just the opposite, IMO Belien often over recruits skill in relation to athleticism and toughness. Which leads to most of his teams struggling on defense.
He consistently give 110% even when we are getting blown out. Some games, he is the only one who seems to have shown up. Love his game off the dribble drive penetration, and he's our best perimeter defender on this team. Can't wait to see how he blossoms over the next two years. A bright spot in this disappointing season.
And this is the time I wish I could use the posbang feature. 100% my man.
Thread inspired me to watch some highlights of his. Last year as freshman in the Breslin Center going right at Dawson probably the best defender in college, not only scoring but then stares him down after the shot. That's some Trey Burke shit right there, and this team needs more dogs like that. If he had a little better court vision and was a better passer I'd play him at point and move Walton off the ball.
MAAR is clearly a Big Ten player. He could find a spot on most teams in the conference as at least a scorer off the bench. We haven't had a guy who could get to the rim and finish like him since, well who? Even Burke didn't finish as well as MAAR does honestly, though Burke was obviously a much better overall player.
Since Stauskas.
