Quick Poll- Worst MGoBlog Trend

Submitted by Gulo Gulo Luscus on

What's pissing you off right now?  Feel free to add your own, but I will have to approve before it gets listed.  Sorry if this doesn't work so well.  It's an expirement on my part and the website hosting these polls is pretty new.

UPDATE: Lots of suggestions coming through.  Kudos to whoever suggested "Polls," and I have to agree with those noting "Posts with nothing but a snarky picture/video" (especially kittens), but I won't be adding anything new.  I'll try to post some of the more creative and horrifying at some point.

UPDATE UPDATE: Um yeah... you guys about covered it.  I think most of what came up fell into some subset of my initial poll options.  For what it's worth, RR discussion appear to be the worst MGoTrend by a landslide at the moment.  I can live with that.  Thanks to all who participated.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE:Thanks to profitgoblue for balancing things out with the "love fest" thread.  My intent was not to generate any more negativity than we already have here.  In retrospect it's an obvious consequence, but I hope people feel better having had a chance to vent.  Can't make something better without knowing what's making it worse.

that I am agreeing with someone with -55 points (currently), but you are correct - yes, much of the fanbase is still walking around pained about the process, RR not being brought back for his 4th year where he was going to go 13-0, or the Hoke hiring, but Brian has certainly contributed heavily to this somber mood.

It is understandable that Brian is so down - his life and his livelihood is Michigan, and Michigan football and BB have sucked, with hockey having something of an off season.  But, I wonder how much discontentment there would be in these parts if Brian were in the "I AM SO PSYCHED THAT WE HIRED HOKE AND ARE FINALLY RETURNING TO MICHIGAN FOOTBALL THE WAY IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE PLAYED!!!!!!111!!!!!!" crowd?

Let's add another "other"...people with negative points and who joined less than a month ago who think the points system is stupid. Yes, some peopel take it too seriously sometimes, and ive been guilty of it too...but you're quite dense if you don't understand its merits (mostly to weed out trolls and take away posting abilities), and maybe you should lurk around the site longer before blindly posting on it with a new account.

I understand people on here are recruitniks, but I don't need to see a post of every single player to receive an M offer. Tom and Tim's weekly update are enough for me. I do like the Hello: posts though.

Gotta disagree with you on this. Recruiting's a vital part of college football and is on-topic in every way. Think this is one of those things where you can just choose to not open the thread. Should be clear what the topic is if people title their posts properly.

Which leads me to another point: TITLE YOUR POSTS PROPERLY PEOPLE. It isn't difficult to create an informative title with just a few words. To use an example from the top of the board right now, there is a thread called "OT: Breaking News - Cabrera and DUI". This is informative. But the thread could have easily been title "Cabrera". That is not informative. Kapeesh?

I can't back this up enough. I think a lot of the board's problems right now are due to thread titles. I know I haven't been around the board that long, so I don't know if this is a recent trend. Even when you look at the top topics right now, you can see there are some that really good and you know what you're getting when you click on them and others that are broad and could be anything. It always helps to address the issue in the thread title.

I think thread titles do address some of people's frustrations on the boards. If threads are informatively titled (though that might be a little boring), we won't have as many SIAP, which are really annoying. Furthermore, you won't have as many threads asking mods to delete or threads that are kitty bombed. I find the kitty bombings funny, but when you see it several times a day, the effect wears off.

As far as the other issues, the whole DB/RR topics seem to be more people wanting to start threads with their own opinions. They want to highlight how they feel on the issue. I think part of that is because without the new buttons, it's hard to notice posts as well, and as a result, points aren't addressed, leading people to start new threads. Personally, I feel these issues are beaten to death, but obviously, people feel that their opinion matters and should be debated. It is a board after all.

As far as the whole grammer nazi/error thing, I think it will be addressed if we ever get the posbang/negbang issue settled. Once people are held to some standard of posting, we won't have that issue because if you make grammar errors, you'll get negbanged. If you want to criticized someone for their grammar, you can negbang them. It won't solve things completely, but it will force people to put more effort when they post.

Lastly, I don't think groupthink is something you can really fix. On any board, there is going to be a predominant feeling. That's just the way it is.

Given the frequency of any actual news around here lately, I don't really mind the offer posts.  I don't fancy myself a recruitnik, but it at least puts a name out there that I can recognize when it's brought up again.

Besides, which would you rather see, "___ offered" or "This is my off-the-cuff <opinion or prediction> on why <insert athletic team> will do <better or worse> next year"?

I hate the ass kissing that goes on toward members with alot of points. Also, it's extremely obvious that your best chance of gaining points is to make a short, sarcastic comment and also be among the first three to respond to a thread.

Tolmichfan beat me to my answer of people waiting to see what Brian thinks before forming their own opinions. Sometimes this place is groupthink at its worst.

Also, the "Rome" nature the site takes on when the "clones" start regurgitating things like GERG!!! or MINOR RAGE, for example.

I think what 03 Blue 07 says has a lot of merit.

February 17th, 2011 at 12:44 PM ^

"GERG" mutated to "GERG the white".

I'm on here most of the work day mostly lurking and reading. I figured (my first f*^k up) that most people would be gone due to the off-season and it would be the Old Guard plus a few new members, and there would be the OT debate till spring ball then the OT debate till fall. So far I'm wrong.

What really bugs me is when people change the Avatar, I usually skim post to see the Posters I like or trust and then they change their picture and it f%^ks me up till I get their picture down. In closing "Hail Bundy".

1. The obsession with defending RR's legacy at all costs.  (Unless you're his agent, what does it matter?)

and

2.  The "I don't know what to think until I hear Brian's take" attitude.  (Corollary: "Because Brian said X, I must never disagree.")  Great guy, runs an awesome site, but he's as capable of being wrong about things as anyone else.

Are you saying, blanket, in all contexts, you hate #2? Because I can tell you I sure as hell don't form as educated an opinion of any football game until reading the UFR completely. Unless you do your own UFR at home (and no, I don't mean rewatching the game; I do that. I mean tracking each player and play), how can you not have your opinion influenced heavily re: individual players, effectiveness of certain schemes vs. what the opponent does, etc., without looking at the data? Now, if the data is flawed- which, sometimes, I think it is when Brian does his analysis of whether or not something was the right read when someone is running with the ball, etc (I think this is far too hindsight-ish to judge a split-second in-game decision, unless the player is clearly making up his mind pre-snap on where he's going to cut/give on a ZR vs. keep)- then I understand. But how you can say that you can properly judge certain positions especially- the entire offensive line, the "RPS" aspect of what the defense was doing, etc.- on an aggregate basis, fully and as intelligently without "waiting to see what Brian says" (the UFR)?

Granted, this is one very minor quibble about a very specific area of "agreeing with Brian" or "waiting to see what Brian writes," obviously.

Also, I generally find myself agreeing with about 85% of what Brian writes. Not because Brian wrote it, but because it's intelligent and rational. The other 15% is usually when I think he's making incorrect assumptions or weighing factors differently than I do regarding a topic.

If some idiot is making dumbass statements completely unsupported by any fact or logic, then negging freely is all well and good, whether it's an extended emo-like tirade or a short but awesomely stupid comment.

It's the anonymous, drive-by cowards who neg reasonable or non-controversial comments without having the balls to actually post a comment explaining their reasons for the neg that are irritating. If TomVh posts a recruiting update that he admits doesn't have a whole lot of new information, some asshat will be sure to neg him without any explanation.

I personally hate the posts that either try to use the NCAA video game to rationalize a real life thought - or the posts that ask the entire forum about the video game.

I play the game myself but find those posts annoying as hell

I love the guys that think since the FB trap worked against Purdue in their little video game world, that means we should run it the next time we play the Boilers.  Nothing like a stupid nerd to brighten our days!  Points to you MichLove.  Good call.

1. Newer posters posting vague one liners to every thread to gain points. ex "I think our defense is going to be a lot better next year, Go Blue!".

2. Older posters citing their years reading or posting on this blog. I don't give a F how many years you've been here.

3. His Dudeness- I am waiting for a post from him that isn't about him whining or complaining like a female dog.

4. Neg threads. It's like a big circle jerk for the MGOBLOG "elite". Negged for avatar XYZ. Negged for not liking avatar XYZ. Negged for Negging Negger of avatar XYZ. Were these threads every funny?

1)  Agreed.  You can often tell how irrational a post is by how many exclamation points are tacked on the end of the "GO BLUE!!!!!!!"

2) If you'd been here longer, you'd understand.

4)   Neg threads are exceedingly rare, and when done properly they can be quite amusing.  Again, if you had more points, you would understand.

... you guys are annoying.  Get a life.  Seriously.  We get it, you went to UM, and you are smart.  If you have nothing better to do than hammer a guy for a key-stroke error you need to get a woman.

Some of us have wives and families and can't sit next to the monitor with a dictionary, thesaurus and a "Speaking Klingon" manual in hand waiting for the next dude to misspell Ablauf.

Spelling and grammar are important because misspellings and, more significantly, improper grammar can and does change the meaning of a post. At the very least, significant mistakes make posts difficult to read. Typically, people get hammered when they: A) Don't use punctuation B) Rant about how much smarter they are than everyone else in incomprehensible gibberish. C) Make anything less than a grammatically perfect post while calling someone else out. I'm fine with all three. It keeps the discourse a little better than mlive.

I find it interesting that one of the choices is "Spelling/Grammar Nazis" but not "Spelling/Grammar Errors."

I get pretty irritated by all the RR rehashing, but even moreso by those who hijack threads into becoming RR rehash when the OP clearly was writing about something else.

I have (mostly) become a lurker. It just isn't worth wading into stupid arguments, and I don't feel I have much to offer.

I really hate threads that are very short and rude and snarky. In other words, MLive. "First" and FU and F*** and nsfw pics, etc. is annoying. If I can't have intelligent discourse, what's the point?

I also sometimes get tired of pointless affirmation. Don't just write "Great Post!" Give a sentence or two explaining why something is great.

I also don't like trolls. However, I can be just as irritated with responses to trolls. First rule:  DON'T FEED THE TROLLS.

A lot of the RR/DB/Hoke rants are just sad. These disliked rants can be both positive and negative. Meaning, Hoke & DB are NOT the best thing since sliced bread, and RR is not the anti-Christ. All three have their flaws. We'll find out more about this over the next several years, won't we? We can agree that time (and Michigan Football) moves on, and that's what we need to do too.

I personally like DB's stand on the process, even though I will agree that it hurt the job search for RR, and the recruiting process. It was a price worth paying, from my perspective. It allowed RR to coach his team in the bowl, a privilege earned. And the bowl loss put nails in the coffin:  this effectively ended all debate on RR, especially for RR apologists like myself. The damage to recruiting, while bad, was not crippling. And the process also allowed for Hoke to receive more support (than I think he would have otherwise.)

I think that the last four years have really taken a toll on Brian, and on the board. The board's popularity does mean there is regression to the mean (i.e., a dumbing down of discourse.)

I like the point system. I like it when Brian is on his game and writes interesting pieces for the front page. I like intelligent and (somewhat) civil disagreement. I usually like spelling & grammar Nazis. Group think is both positive and negative.

I am torn about SIAP stuff. Sometimes, there is too much to wade through. Sometimes, there is something new on a topic, and it isn't exactly SIAP.

Partly, I'm just crabby, and ready for Spring, and for Spring Football.

Posts that assume the coaches are always infallible because we fans either a) aren't as smart as the coaches or b) don't attend practice and see what's going on

2:  Section 1's posts have gotten annoying and frequent enough to be a trend.

The things that bug me are when people forget they're reading a blog and freak out for reasons like:

  • We need to be united! (no, people having different opinions and trying to support them is far superior to unity)
  • This has become far too snarky (wait, you're just realizing now that Brian is snarky? He's always been snarky...)

Also, I have always and will always despise "tl;dr" -- and people know this and write "tl;dr" to fuck with me, and that makes me more pissed off because I know you people are all laughing at me because I am verbose and I realize it but I can't understand how anyone who reads this blog would think anything not written by Charles Dickens is "too long," or what value you provide to the world by announcing you didn't read what was above. If someone just rambled, okay, but "hey, here's a metric ton of information I took to write for you" and your contribution is "sorry, that was too long, so I didn't read it. By my ignorance of whatever point you were making, I am hereby asserting my superiority."

Watch, someone will "tl;dr" in response to this. And I will dock that person 2,000 points.

Also, I get annoyed when anything is taken 100% seriously. You're still drawing breath, and Michigan plays football -- what the hell could be so wrong to counterract all of that?
