Quick Poll- Worst MGoBlog Trend

Submitted by Gulo Gulo Luscus on

What's pissing you off right now?  Feel free to add your own, but I will have to approve before it gets listed.  Sorry if this doesn't work so well.  It's an expirement on my part and the website hosting these polls is pretty new.

UPDATE: Lots of suggestions coming through.  Kudos to whoever suggested "Polls," and I have to agree with those noting "Posts with nothing but a snarky picture/video" (especially kittens), but I won't be adding anything new.  I'll try to post some of the more creative and horrifying at some point.

UPDATE UPDATE: Um yeah... you guys about covered it.  I think most of what came up fell into some subset of my initial poll options.  For what it's worth, RR discussion appear to be the worst MGoTrend by a landslide at the moment.  I can live with that.  Thanks to all who participated.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE:Thanks to profitgoblue for balancing things out with the "love fest" thread.  My intent was not to generate any more negativity than we already have here.  In retrospect it's an obvious consequence, but I hope people feel better having had a chance to vent.  Can't make something better without knowing what's making it worse.

This site really is amazing...

Some of your suggestions are great and others are simply horrendous.  Regardless I don't think I can keep checking and allowing people to add.  New thread posts will do well enough to make a sizeable "other" category.

I voted SIAP.  But the worst really is the MLive-ing of the site that makes the grammar/spelling nazis necessary.  In other words...

if u cant say sumthing without saying it like this then i dontw anna hear it lol you should of just shut urmouth

Overall level of intelligence of posters/average level of intelligent thought per comment vs. 3 or 4 years ago. Popularity has bred regression to the mean. Now we have to neg and explain to people why they're making asinine points. I feel like that happened less in the past because there were less asinine posts. Or maybe I'm just romanticizing the past. And also an elitist prick. Quite possible.

I agree with this observation.  This site was previously populated with a group of people who really (1) knew Michigan, (2) wanted to discuss Michigan intelligently, and (3) didn't (usually) drop down to the level of MLive commenters.  There was more of a community feeling, where I felt that I knew (as much as you can in an anonymous internet setting) many of the "regulars" and knew their views on relevant topics.  As this blog has surged in popularity, while many of the regulars are still here, there are so many newbies posting that it waters down the community sense.

This is not to say, of course, that newbies are not welcome - we all started as newbies.  And many newer members add great comments to the discourse.  But, it just seems like the # of posts and threds from 150 point users that are more fit for MLive or the comment section of the Freep or DetNews articles has grown.

That's the thing, though; it was and is inevitable. A lot of the old time regular posters actually went off to start their own blogs. Some still comment here, but far less frequently than they did. The WLA obviously is the biggest example, but there are others as well. Heck, last night I saw a post from "Kgh10" and wanted to say "hey! I remember that guy from the HaloScan days- where'd you go man?"

At the same time, though, it's good that this community has gotten so big, if for no other reason than it has allowed a.) Brian to make a living, b.) him to hire contributors, and c.) MGoBlog to establish itself as a much more major presence in the blogosphere and, dare I say, greater journalism world at large. So you take the good with the bad. It honestly reminds me of liking a band before they "got big," minus all of the "you poser, I owned their first EP that was released on Fisher Price records and I attended their second concert EVAR at Bill Stephen's mom's house in her garage in 1992," that I feel like you get with snobby music fans. (Cough, cough, Pitchfork.com, cough). And, actually, the points system works pretty well, given the size of this blog's readership, in keeping things in check, though it can lead to people being afraid to express opinions that go against the grain. However, I feel like the readers of this blog won't neg for disagreement alone if the other viewpoint is presented intelligently and rationally. I hope it always stays that way.

... I hate when people get negged for expressing an opinion that differs from your own, even though the opinion is defenseable.

I like negging for policing trolls, drama queens, and misanthropes, but I hate when I see someone with a controversial but meritable point get negged.

I also don't like when new people get negged because they didn't read a post from Brian 3 years ago that disproved some commonly held belief.

Annoying posters:

His Dudeness for being perpetually butthurt

Communist Football and his painfully dumb rants on our "future" under Harbaugh being filled with faking injuries and losing to spread offenses

Worst MGoBlog trend that started today: People using the comments section in a poll about "trends" to call out other people individually and launch personal ad hominem attacks. Obviously personal attacks aren't new, but putting them in this comment thread that asks about trends is.

We need some sort of MGoSteelCage.

honestly, i hate everything around here lately.  feels like everyone here, including me, is just that asshole at every business meeting that just says something so everyone knows they are there.  nothing is happening, nothing is going to happen anytime soon, yet here i am, quarterhourly, to satisfy my addiction

When I reloaded this page I was allowed to vote again. So right now voting is Chicago style (early and often)

I voted for RR. The man worked hard for us, he's gone, get over it (from a huge RR supporter)

another "other" I'd add is posters bashing M Players/prospects. There's a line between critiquing someone's play and saying "OBI SUCKS!!"

Let's remember that these are 17-22 year olds working their tails off for our university and our enjoyment as fans

i hate how some people take brians word as the word of god on this site.. he has some valid points and sometimes he doesn't.  i also hate when section 1 posts anything.

I hate it when people do not capitalize letters.  I mean, how hard is it to hit the shift key/button?  Do you think you're so busy that you cannot take that extra nanosecond?  Because of your selfishness, we now have to read a sentence without capital letters.

i hate capital letters.  why isn't a period enough to let everyone know that i have stoped my sentence and am about to begin a new sentence.  but i forgive you for hating that i don't like to use Capital letters.  now will you take my blessing...

and we can share a beer at the spring game.

also for the grammer nazi's... this is way over my head, but why can't this board have a MS word type spell check.  i can't spell for shit and it would help out a ton.

Can I be the stick in the mud that says he's tired of RCMB-like posts of hawt chix, man? I like to surf at lunch at work, and those pics -- while titillating in every sense of the word -- aren't why I visit MGoBlog. I will say that I still like most of the other photo stuff, even the oft-repeated "Cool Story Bro"s.

Second is all the thread double-posting and then concomitant criticism of the double-posting -- though I'm hoping Brian can develop a technological solution for that (maybe a separate "already posted" vote button, and if you reach critical mass there the post disappears?)

Third is the groupthink. That's why I still love me Sean Ornery and his fervent criticism of so-called "sissy points".

Since we're bitching, I'll add this corollary to your first point: any time someone has a hawt tits (or hawt azz) avatar and someone goes "wow dude +1 for hawt avatar."  Really?  "The Internet Is For Porn" was written almost ten years ago, and we're getting boners over an 85x70 low-res picture of someone's ass?  Like the retards in the GoDaddy commercials looking at Danica Patrick's shoulders acting like 11-year-olds that just discovered Dad's old Playboys?

I have nothing whatsoever against hawt tits avatars, but I wish people would stop acting like this is the only place on the Internet where they can be found.

It never ceases to amaze me (maybe I'm easily amazed) when someone posts news and people jump all over him or her because it was posted the day before.   The poster inevitably didn't realize that the news had been posted.  More, how hard is it to just ignore a thread?

CompleteLunacy

February 17th, 2011 at 2:23 PM ^

...on another hand, if it's really old news that likely has already made the site, maybe people need to learn how to use the site search function better.

But then again, if the news is still relevant but got buried on the Board overnight or something, not everyone here lives on the site all day and perhaps we missed the original, so we're thankful for the new post.

In general, tho, people need to calm down and turn down the snarkiness on a redundant thread...unless it's particularly egregious (like a redundant thread that has a bad title and which is merely a few spots above the first person who actually posted it).

With recruiting now over and a controversial coaching change in place we're going to spend the rest of the off season being butthurt.  There will be occasional moments of unity when basketball begins a tournament run of some sort (be it NIT or NCAA) and the hockey team's playoff run.  Overall thought football drives the bus and we'll focus on it.

When someone transfers out we'll have a meltdown about Hoke not keeping players and how it is the end of the world.  We'll blame the scheme change and everything under the sun and then totally flip when the kid ends up at Miami.  Hoke supporters will blame RR for low quality recruits, RR supporters will blame Hoke.

Then the season will finally start and if Hoke doesn't start winning things will only get worse.

Basically the annoying trend is one part of the board is going to spend the offseason being bitter and butthurt over the coaching change and trolling as a result.  Another part of the board will be hyperdefensive of Hoke and go full nuclear whenever said trolling occurs.

One of you assholes needs to go move in with a Japanese girl or something....
