Quick Notes on new Wolverines in the NFL

Submitted by canzior on

I've been trying to keep up with the rookies in the league to see how they've been doing, and what buzz is out there surrounding them.  A few quick notes below:

De’Veon Smith, Dolphins – Competing in a very crowded backfield, and spent about a week on the PUP list.  Expected to be ready for camp today. Probably a practice squad player or ST contributor this year.

Amara Darboh, Seahwks – Talked about as being the 4th WR for the Seahawks, getting a lot of praise from Doug Baldwin and Pete Carroll. They love his preparation coming out of Michigan

Delano Hill, Seahawks – Looking good so far, coming in with a lot of rookies and with Kam Chancellor expecting a huge payday, if he plays well, he could save them from giving Kam a lot of money by proving to be the future at the position.

Jeremy Clark, Jets  – likely to sit out this year, but this is the plan and not a path to him getting cut. To be placed on PUP, then practice squad for the rest of the year.  Expect him to compete for a job next season.

Ben Gedeon, Vikings – competing for the 3rd starting LB role. Coach Mike Zimmer called him a “throwback” player and a thumper.

Jourdan Lewis, Cowboys – has been getting praise from the Cowboys players this offseason. Dez Bryant has noticed a change in attitude and aggressiveness from the DB’s than in years past, and he attributes it to the rookies. Many Cowboys blogs expect him to earn the starting slot corner role this season.

Taco Charlton, Cowboys – A lot of Cowboys fans were not happy with this pick.  Some of the optimists think he’ll end up as a solid long-term starter for them, but not spectacular and they are ok with that.  Others point to his year by year improvement, and think he will continue to get better. In OTA’s he matched up against Tyron Smith, widely regarded as the best LT in football, and while he got beat more often than not, he’s held his own considering he is a rookie.

Also…if there is any doubt that the Cowboys are the most popular team in America…there shouldn’t be.  The amount of news and blogs about the Cowboys on a daily basis is considerably more than any other team out there.

Jake Butt, Broncos – is still out with his ACL. He is unable to practice for another 4-6 weeks, but has been putting in tremendous time in the film room and is already becoming a fan favorite. A lot of the newspapers and blogs are gushing over him and he’s been listed as the steal of the draft a number of times (by Denver blogs)

Jabrill Peppers, Browns - After a brief delay signing his contract, is with the team. Is likely to do the returning duties, and figures to start on D at some point this  year.  They have A LOT of safeties, and he will probably have some defensive packages featuring him. Also expected to contribute offensively as Hue Jackson continues to look for weapons. Also still hated by half of the Browns fans for his college choice.

Channign Stribling, Browns - In a crowded defensive backfield...excellent cover skills but a liability in the run game. Looking like a practice squad player...basically what we expected.

Chris Wormley, ravens - Will likely start before the end of the season. many are impressed with his positional flexibility and strength. Also Willie Henry could earn a starting spot as well as the Ravens try to get younger on the DL.

Defensive Tackle: Geno Atkins, Andrew Billings, Ryan Glasgow, Marcus Hardison.

This might be the hardest area to project on the roster due to the number of quality bodies here, as well as how many guys can play multiple positions. The Bengals will be able to keep just four 'true' defensive tackles because of Gilberry and Hardison doubling as a tackle and end. ....Fourth-round rookie Ryan Glasgow is all but locked into his roster spot as a fairly high draft pick.

I'm sorry but that simply isnt true.  There is a vocal MINORITY of fans/media who are more MIchigan haters than Browns lovers but I can tell you when any of them talk shit about JP on twitter they get HAMMERED by the responses.  Mark "Munch" Bishop is the captain of the Peppers-hater team (he predicted a pro bowl for Terrelle Pryor BTW) and whenever he pops off every other Cleveland sports media guy I follow crush him for it.  The fans, at least the ones who respond on twitter, seem overwhelmingly positive about JP and hope he does well here.

Look, two of the MOST popular Browns in the late 80's and early 90's were Leroy Hoard and Steve Huchinson so it's not all anti-Michigan.  Braylon left a sour taste with everybody and that's what's coloring a lot of what you hear.

My prediction is JP becomes the most popular new Brown by end of the season.  Reback it baby!

The Browns have a LOT of bad safeties.

If he isn't starting in some capacity on defense I will be shocked.  Jabrill couldn't be starting his career with a better DC than Gregg Williams for one reason.  Williams was successful with Blaine Bishop who carried a very similar skill set, and he has a specific plan for him.

All of the low brow annoying Browns jokes around here aside, Peppers will be put in a position to succeed.

Yeah, I know people love PFF, but I've read a couple of their grades for linemen on both sides and compared to the games and wondered, even to my untrained eye, how they got to them. PFF is a fine resource, but I see them as a better version of ESPN, not necessarily a collection of super-detailed analysts.

ended up on teams together.  Seahawks, Browns and Cowboys.   Makes it easier to follow the guys and more compelling for me to want to watch this teams.

FYI I listened to a local Dallas station today and they ripped Taco a new one after the first day in pads. Three guys and they all agreed he was weak, slow & had terrible technique. They all admitted it was too early to write him off but don't understand why the Cowboys picked him so high. The terrible technique part was a little surprising.

who were ripping him and what is their actual football IQ?  Depending on the drill, who he went against and considering he is a rookie in his first padded practice all play a factor in what he did.  I think in the long run Taco will have a long and successful career in the NFL.

After the non-guilty verdict the other day, many Cowboys fans were saying how much of a steal Lewis was in the 3rd round. Another Dallas area media guy on twitter claimed that Cowboys got an absolute steal since some teams had 1st round grades on Lewis.

Good stuff. thanks. I think Taco is going to make a lot of people in Dallas happy at the end of the year. He's got a physicality you can't teach.

Taco is not getting much love here in Dallas so far. Received an "F+" grade after today's practice by local media. First practice going against a beast oline, I'm not too worried.

They have said they think Lewis will start and be the best man to man cover
