Quick Look @ '12-'13: Depth Chart

I know, I know...it's waaaay to early. How could I possibly know? How could I possibly predict redshirts for kids who are in high school? "Oh wonderful, guess we don't need spring, summer and fall to figure out the depth chart!" ...and so on, and so forth.
But it's a message board. It's for fun. For the occasional prediction or daydream. So for those getting all huffy...breathe, I'm a fan focused on this year just like you. This is purely information (or speculation) to build on for the future.

With that said...my '12-'13 Depth Chart!

* - I don't think Kalis will redshirt. I think he'll play OT his freshman year before moving inside to LG for the remainder of his career
** - I don't think Pipkins will redshirt. I think he'll play DT his freshman year before moving to NG for the remainder of his career.
FB & Slot - Notice these positions are in italics. I realize you can't have 12 players on the field at once. This is my way of recognizing that.

He might.  The coaches have said that we've got safeties, but lack CBs, not to mention that it takes a little more to develop a safety because it depends less on athleticism (like a CB) and more on cerebral functioning.  Kovacs and Gordon will be solid, so I guess Wilson's red-shirt will depend on the development of Johnson and Robinson as good back-ups.  The biggest thing Wilson has going for him is that he's pretty damn smart and might be able to pick up the D, especially if he enrolls early.

If Gallon plays outside that who plays slot then? That's why I have him there. I suppose you could move Roundtree to slot and just flip them if that's your preference.

Jerald has played both. Because we have Dileo and literally NO other WR outside other than Jackson...he has to stay outside. Even if/when we get Payton and Darboh.

Beyer too has played both. Really he's played SAM, but in passing downs when that position is a WDE...like when Jake Ryan plays with a hand in the ground. IMO he moves to WDE, if he doesn't, Paskorz does.

There's nothing we can do at this point (outside of finding some Russell Wilson like impact transfer OT)...but does our lack of OLine depth completely frighten any of you?

I think this line could potentially be better than the line we have now in terms of starters. But good Lord, right now we have 2 solid backups...next year we have a RS Freshman and a walk-on. Here's to this incoming class of Freshman!

It's not deadly, but it's certainly has to make you a little uneasy when you look at it like this.

Because I think you are forgetting about the fact that..
1. We have OL starters who are seniors. We have limited depth on the tackles, and that is a big concern, but inside what I can gather is that Bryant is moving along nicely.

2. We are bringing in 5 guys who are legit studs.

Braden might end up being the best of the bunch.

Or maybe its Kalis.

Or maybe its Magnusson.

Or maybe its Bar or Stacey.

All I am saying is, it has been a longgg time since Mich had an OL class like the one we have right now, and thats assuming we dont add Banner or Garnett (both possible).

I think Kalis could start at OG assuming an injury and not be tooo much of a fall off, and if we pull Banner he could easily be a solid backup on the outside for us.

After this, the depth is a bit scary. But then again, we have all of 2012 to pick up 4-5 more stud linemen to protect Shane into the future.

On the fifth night—possibly the sixth—a breeze arose.
It was cool and dewy.

I didn't bring it up because I know that's a touching story that we ALL love. But I don't see it.

I'm not big on talking about kids not returning. But since we're discussing it. I don't have Terrence Robinson coming back either. Isaiah Bell is still on the roster on MGoBlue.com but I still don't know if he's on the team even right NOW. I didn't have him on my depth chart.

I put Terrence Talbott on my depth chart, but I wouldn't be shocked if he was gone.

Michael Cox is also done, IMO.

Brandon Moore will be a 5th year but he hasn't done anything. He may just be left on by default. Especially with his Trotwood buddies like Shaw and Roundtree still on the squad.

Josh Furman hasn't seen PT except for special teams (where he's playing very well this year)...so that wouldn't be a shocker. I'm hoping Tamani Carter and Jerrod Wilson can push Furman to SS. If not there, maybe to WLB in the footsteps of Cam Gordon and Brandin Hawthorne. But if he transferred, I wouldn't be stunned...love his size, speed and athleticism...I hope he stays (and I haven't heard one thing about him leaving), because he can still be a great football player at Michigan.

JT Floyd was a guy who I thought may be on the "bubble" as one of the "last 4 in" if we're talking March Madness...but he's proved himself this year. Not just to us fans, but he's proved he can be a starting CB. He and Countess seem like locks for next year unless Avery goes all "progression: overall +10" this offseason. Sidenote, I'm a big fan of Avery...would love to see Countess on the field side, Floyd on the boundary side and Avery in the nickel/slot spot. IMO it would be our best secondary when you add Gordan and Kovacs since the early/mid-00's...maybe even better than those.

as you point out, is so thin, seems like it  would hard to not bring a 5th year guy back along the front if he wants to come back, even if he projects to be a spot player. Who knows. Numbers have to come from somewhere and I guess if the thinking is one of the 5 incoming OLs = a 5th  year guy like Mealer (i.e., about the same difference in performance despite the class difference), why wouldn't you go that route? Either way, I think you're right that at least one of the true freshman OLs sees significant time next year. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple do. Which may be okay. Justin Boren did relatively well at that age in '07, though he was an early enrollee.

We lose Martin, RVB and Heininger...if they lse Richardson, that would be a huge boost for us even with Eddie Lacy coming back.

We certainly have a shot, no doubt. Before we do I'm glad I get to see us go up against MSU, Illinois, Nebraska and OSU this year. And hopefully Wisconsin.

I do have one "bold" prediction for the incoming freshman...I'm not going to put it on the depth chart because I wanted that to be as "official" as possible. But last year I called Desmond Morgan being more than just a career back-up serving time in mop-up duty. More than a 3* converted QB who'd end up at FB. I thought he was going to be very solid for our team and play early.

This year I have two...

It wouldn't shock me to see Funchess and Williams playing TE over Moore and Miller.

Moore has looked awful this year, he can't block. Watson has replaced him on the depth chart. Miller is behind them both so that would tell me he's no better.

Funchess could be the pass catching TE and Williams the blocking TE, a nice combo that I wouldn't be surprised to see for 4 years. I'm not saying it's going to happen. Just saying that's one "unexpected to most" move that wouldn't suprise me.

But due to the fact we have Braden, Magnuson, Bars and possibly one more at tackle, I think he'll move to guard in his second year. I just have him starting at OT due to depth and the fact we have Bryant inside.

Honestly, it wouldn't shock me to see him play center at Michigan. I could definitely see Magnuson-Bars-Kalis-Stacey-Braden. However I think we'll get one more OL and you know Bryant and Miller will break that group up as will the OLmen in the 2013 class.

I think Morgan back-ups Demens next fall at MIKE after putting on some pounds over the next year.  I think Ross and Poole battle for the back-up spot at WILL (with Mike Jones).  I think RJS redshirts but ends up at MIKE and I think Bolden also redshirts and ends up at SAM, although he could play MIKE as well.

Because they showed they could play, even if buried on the depth chart.

Now Morgan has gotten a start. But he hasn't played a starter's # of snaps this year. That's why I added him with Clark and Beyer who are clearly down there.

You can add Thomas Rawls to this too. Why play him over Hopkins or Cox late in the game?

I think we get too caught up in the NCAA video game mentality sometimes where you redshirt everyone. Where you play with a 45 man roster and redshirt 25 guys.

That's not realistic.

I think Bolden and Ross will play next year because I think they're the most polished. Both are very "football smart" like Morgan was coming in. I think they'll pick up the defense quicker than the others. (Assuming they (others) don't enroll early, which isn't 100% set yet).

Also, sometimes you burn redshirts to break up the class. So everyone isn't graduating at the same time. RS Seniors can be valuable.

Not only that but when you're recruiting. To have a bunch of LBs on the team as RS Freshman, it doesn't help cause kids don't see PT as easily. Burn a couple and it helps you clear up room down the road.

To answer your question, there are a bunch of reasons. But we've played Morgan, Hawthorne, Herron and Mike Jones all at WLB this season. So using 4 next year isn't too far fetched.

Lastly, special teams help.

I think Countess is the freshman star of this years defense. IMO James Ross will be the freshman star of next year. Countess after Woolfolk, Ross after Demens.
