Question: What are chances of Brady ever coming back to UM to work?

Submitted by crg on

With all the Brady-love threads (and rightfully so), there has been a suggestion that he come back to UM once he retires from playing to join the staff in some respect.

I admit that I don't follow much of headlines/discussion/rumors about individual players, so can the board comment about if this is even a remote possibility?  Does he have any coaching experience at any level (i.e. Harbaugh volunteer-coaching early in his career)?  Has he even expressed any interest in coaching afterwards?  Would a move to AA be too much for him, Giselle, and his family?  Is he a good fit as a position coach or perhaps some form of booster/supporter?

This whole idea is most likely a pipe dream, but if it could work why not go for it.  Hackett swung for fences when he went for Harbaugh and look how that worked out.

Talk amongst yourselves.

This is the correct answer. There is no Hall of Fame QB in modern era who went into coaching. John Elway as an NFL team executive is the closest thing.

your reply to me was off topic.  How was I to know you reposted the same comment from a previous thread.  You shouldn't make assumptions that others have read your posts from previous threads.  I wasn't commenting on the success of HOF Qbs that also had coaching careers.  I was commenting on the fact there was a HOF fame QB that coached in the modern era.  Now, if you wanna discuss the success (or lack thereof) of said coach, I'm for that, but that's a different topic than what I replied to.

Brady could barely string a sentence together in his interviews during the 2001 season. The guy is a poster boy for all kinds of quack fake science like energy bracelets and shit. Let's not let our loyalty to the block M blind us to the fact that Tom is kinda sorta dumb. His general studies degree wouldn't have gotten him very far if he hadn't been the GOAT QB.

Not even close to Tom Brady money.  Brady got a $28 million signing bonus in 2016.  His base salary in 2018 and 2019 is $14 million per year.  By the time his current contract his up, he would have made easily more the $40 million on a 4 year contract.  Brady's total cash earnings in his NFL career are just south of $200 million, which is just the NFL money he has made, not including his endorsement deals.  No doubt Harbaugh made some good money in the NFL and is making better money now, but he still isn't anywhere near Tom Brady money.

Right, it all depends if he has a passion for it, and if so, he will take a shot at nfl coaching similar to Harbaugh. Then if that doesn't work out and the timing is perfect and the AD doesn't drop the ball (see: Les Miles), he would probably coach UM. That's a lot of IFs though, so much we're more likely to get an entirely different ex-player as the next coach

And at this rate, god knows when or if Brady will stop playing

Anyone catch in that article that he also wants to play another 10 years or until he is 48.  Sounds like the "Will he coach after retirement" question may be a bit premature, if not already answered.

Good article and answers the question for now. But he loves football so much, I don't see him being able to get away from it even though he says he wants to right now. I also don't see him going into the booth or being a talking head (even though I think he would be very good at it). It is to far removed from the action.

I think a few years removed from playing he will get back in some capacity and I think coach will probably be his avenue just maybe in the pros, not at Michigan.

I didn't say it had to be coaching (I wasn't sure if he was even interested in it and another poster put up a good link shooting that down).  But, would he be interested in joining the organization in some respect?  Recruiting, relations - I'm not even certain what kind of role that would be, but I'm sure there's a precedent somewhere (maybe another P5 school).

Tom Brady and his supermodel wife are not interested in leaving their mansion in the Hollywood Hills to come hang out in Ann Arbor so Tom can have a perfunctory job at the University, no. Those type of jobs are given to former athletes who don't make it in the pros and have no other real skills except the ability to raise money for their alma mater. Like Archie Griffin at Ohio State.
