Question for TOB, Tim, TVH on Plan B

Submitted by CincyBlue on
Michigan has 4 DB's left on the board for 2010, with one or two spots left open. Parker, looks good. Knight, looks pretty good. Don't know how the Rutgers visit went. Dorsey - staying south most likely. Grimes - who knows, between Michigan and Ole Miss. My question is, if Michigan goes 0-4 (please no!) or 1-4. Would Michigan take a signing day flier on Ernest Thomas (who has offers from Penn State, WVU and visited Minn. this past weekend) who I know the board feels is over rated. Or is there another Plan B type of player Michigan might offer on National Signing day if they have an un-expected spot open.

I don't know if Michigan has the scholarships to take on a flier. If they like a kid and want him in the class then they'll take him. But IMO if he doesn't have an offer yet I don't see them throwing one out to Thomas just to get another body. With that said if any of the above want to commit we will welcome them with open arms (except Thomas) no offense to him (does he even have an offer/commit-able offer?)

I don't think there is a plan B. The plan is to get the best players you can get, and if the guys we want; Parker, Knight, Grimes, etc, don't come, I am guessing we'll finish as is. I don't see the point in taking DB/Fred Kluzz, who you haven't offered till signing day, just because you struck out on your last targets. Maybe I'm wrong though...

But it's a very dynamic decision to make - you don't want to waste a scholarship just for the sake of giving it out, but at the same time, RichRod's clock is ticking and there's always the chance that a lower rated recruit could be a sleeper. Only the staff knows where that line is drawn, but I think it's safe to assume that a kid who still hasn't been offered at this point in the process will not be given a scholarship this year. I don't think it'll come to that, however. If RichRod was serious about taking 26 (and I don't see why he wouldn't be) then I think that he'll be able to fill the class with guys that he's already offered (i.e. Parker, Knight, etc)

Didn't RR state during his interview at the UConn game that he is not going to offer people just to fill out the class. He would use those scholarships next year. I think if you have not received an offer at this point you will not get one.

Dropped us originally? Lots of smoke about Mark Bihl badmouthing RR during his recruitment. Dropped us when all the rumors about him being the mystery OT popped up? Well, he visited MSU - the school he committed to. No doubt Father Mark spent that weekend preaching to him about the meaning of the word "commitment."

Ok if RR's record of 8-16 the last 2 seasons is the reason that guys like Braylon and Bihl are upset. Then why would Bihl purposely run off a beastly OT like Skyler when someone like him can help turn the program around. It's seems to me there is something more to this than just the team performance the last 2 seasons. What the hell is going on?

I'm not saying this is necessarily how Bihl feels, but a lot of the anti-RR folks don't just dislike him because of the record. They have a problem with RR the person and the way he operates. After 13 years of Carr, an "outsider" coming in and swearing like a sailor and cussing players out rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. (That's also part of the propoganda machine in East Lansing, that Dantonio is somehow morally superior and RR doesn't care about his players.)

Yes, they have backup plans. Remember, signing day is on the 4th, but that's just the first day that kids can officially sign. They don't have to sign by that day, so if they miss, they'll still have time to look at other people to see if they want to offer them. I know they are already starting to talk to people, just in case. You'll probably see some names pop up sometime soon, if they haven't already.

TomVH (or anyone else who wants to chime in), a general question regarding a finer point in recruiting. Does the RR regime have any hard and fast rules or conditions on offers with regard to players who continue to take official visits? I.e., if Talbott takes an official to UNC, does that mean his offer is no longer firm, and he's warned that somebody else -- J. Black for instance -- might take his schollie slot while he's vasillating?

RR shares the same philosophy as pretty much every coach: "If you're looking around, so are we." In the case of Talbott, his offer is and will remain firm. I expect RR will be in-home with the Talbotts at some point this week. The crucial element here is keeping Terrence from visiting UNC this upcoming weekend. They're not splitting up, so if RR can make sure Terrence is secure (along with talking up UM to Terry to get rid of some of the afterglow of the UNC visit), things should be squared away with them.

In light of Talbott's visit to UNC, it seems a bit of a contradiction to say the offer "remains firm" while also indicating to recruits "if you're looking around, so are we". I know this seems like picking nits and trivia and all. It's just that I have this buddy who's a Texas fan. He claims that Mack Brown will revoke an offer from a verbally committed prospect if that prospect takes visits subsequent to the verbal. In other words, "you're all in or you're out". Is my buddy and the burnt orange nation deluded into thinking that's true and their shit doesn't stink?

Not a single fan of any other program in the country can compare his team's situation to Texas. They have the most unique recruiting situation in the country, and it cannot be duplicated, replicated, or compared at any other program. They fill up about 80% of their class in a three-day period in the spring.

Could you explain this further? Or do you have a link where I can read about it on my own? I do realize that an absurdly high number of UT's players are in-state, but filling 80% of your class in the spring? That's crazy. Thanks in advance.

I typed this once and then it gave me an error, so here's an abbreviate version... Every kid in Texas grows up wanting to be a Longhorn. Mack Brown has a Junior Day in the spring where he hands out offers. He basically says, "You either take this offer, or I'll rescind it and go find someone else to take your slot." Most kids take it. Texas had like 18 commits by April or May of last year, or something crazy like that.

It gives the date of commitment for every recruit. http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=4&yr=2010 And, yes, it's sick. They send out offers on LOI day for next year's class. For their 2010 class, they had 9 commits in the first week of recruiting and another 10 before they closed their spring camp -- that's right, 10 months ago! (And just 3 since then.) It allows them to focus on scouting all year while all the other coaches are pounding out sales pitches, texting and all the rest of the crap they have to go through to court 17 year olds.

At their huge Junior Days, basically the who's who of Texas HS football shows up, the vast majority having grown up diehard Texas fans. Mack deals out a select number of offers, and the ones who get them jump on them. At their first Junior Day in early February, they got nine commitments. At their second, they got five. A couple others were sprinkled in there in the early spring. This year has actually been atypical in that they still have a great shot at some of the kids later in the process. They turned Mike Davis from LSU in December. They got Darius White at the Under Armour Game. They're the favorites for Jordan Hicks and Jackson Jeffcoat. Overall, they just select who they want.

Yes, Texas owns the state of Texas HS football, which, if you were going to own a state to recruit football players from, would be the best. It's sick, really, how easy Brown's job is on that front. He recruits high school COACHES rather than players. So, I guess what you're saying, without directly answering the question, is yes, they can be that cocky. The one downside for them is they can't seem to recruit outside of Texas.

You don't need to recruit outside of Texas if recruiting only in Texas gets you in the National Title Game every 4 or 5 years. It seems like every year they recruit 1 kid from out of state, and it's usually from a neighboring state. As of 2009 they had 4 football players from outside of Texas. (according to Rivals)
