Question Re: grayshirting
So we keep hearing about greyshirts and who is going to be one and how much it's going to cost them to go to Michigan for a semester and pay for it themselves out of pocket. So my question is in two parts.
One: Can they work out with the team the first semester they are on campus? Are then then treated as a walk-on with all the benefits of the training table but not benefits of tuition/room&board?
Two: If they decided they couldn't afford it, what are the chances they would be able to just enroll in the spring semester?

First answer is No - they cannot participate in any team activities except maybe the weight room.
Second - I suppose it is possible, I have also heard the possibility of going to a nearby CC which would be cheaper and Credits from MI schools are easy (easier at least) to transfer into M.

I thought they could do whatever. They are considered a walk on that first semester.

No, that's not a grey shirt, that's just a walk on. The difference there is that first year would count as your redshirt year, whereas a grey shirt year doesn't count toward your 5.
A grey shirt is either when a kid enrolls, pays his own way and doesn't begin team activities until the spring or he simply doesn't enroll until the winter semester, making him an early enrollee in the 2017 class, essentially.

And has to be part time in the fall....

Yes, I believe you are right about that.

Which you would likely opt for anyway for cost-purposes. So keep in mind that kids who take this option aren't even paying full tuition.

If they can't work out with the team, it seems like it may be idea for them to not enroll until after the first of the year.

OK, but if they don't enroll then the still can't work out with the team. It just depends on whether the kid wants to start college or not. And he'll still have access to the IM building and CCRB (and quite possibly the football facilities when the team isn't using them) and he'll be able to begin relationships with the coaches and players.

I don't think Michigan should ever use the term.
How about 'maizeshirting' instead?

Not a real term of maizeshirting while greyshirting is real.

Some people made this kind of statement and they're 100% serious. Plus, sometimes it's hard to tell sarcasm on the internet without /s.

No one seems to understand grayshirting. The player doesn't enroll until the spring. They don't go to school for the fall semester. They report in the spring. If they do come, it has to be as a part time student. Being a full time student will start their five-year clock.

That ties together all the thoughts about being part time and everything else. So they could enroll to get ON campus and have access to the facilities and everything but not start their 5 years of eligibility until they are actually full time on scholarship for the Winter (misspoke earlier with Spring)
So they would NOT be on the hook for the full tuition the first semester, but if they wanted, and they were not Michigan residents, they could move up and start the clock on when the would be able to apply for Michigan resident status.

Apply for Michigan resident status? I don't believe that's possible in Michigan if you come for the purpose of going to school.

We talked about this in the diary for the recruiting class and most had indicated you'd enroll at WCCC to make sure the credits transfer (and not incur a massive cost esp if student is from out of state) and then enroll at UM in January 2017.
I guess the other option is to be a part time student at UM itself in fall 2016.

And apparently everyone else didn't, either.

2016 grey shirt = 2017 Early enrollee?

Essentially, yeah. They just have to find something to do for 4 months, and accept that they're essentially starting with kids a year behind them.
