So I have a buddy who is an MSU alum and has very recently been talking a lot of crap about the Michigan fan base. He claims that only people who attended the University can be considered fans and that everyone else is more or less a pathetic bandwagon jumper. He makes this claim because he states that you find people all over the place who claim they are big Wolverine fans but have not attended the University and that this is not the case with State. The big fans of State are “alums and you rarely find anyone who is not an Alum claim they are bug fans of the University”.
Now the reason that this has pissed me off to no end is because I have not attended the University and have been a Michigan fan since I could walk. I have had 2 cousins and 1 uncle play for Michigan (I was not blessed with that level of talent and was only got looks from D2 schools). One of my cousins is actually the M Club president. I have been raised to cheer for the Maize and Blue. Over the years it has become more of an obsession. I love this team, always have and always will. I will support them through the thick and thin and make it to every game that I possibly can (still in college so money is tight).
I am looking to you guys to ask what you think on the topic. Do you believe that you have to have attended the University to be a true fan? What does it take to be a fan? And also what I can tell him on why most people are fans other then the academic and football superiority?

Fuck that. Even if I didn't come here I know I'd still root for UM, no matter what.
