question about Tom Strobel
Sorry to start a thread about this...I can't find where I read this on mgoboard.
Someone said that Tom Strobel was having problems with others because he committed to UM. Anyone have a source or two on that?
What serious dicks if that is the case. seriously serious dicks. Can't people see that these young guys are making life decisions that they feel are the best for them?
I hope Tom is of the breed to make something like this totally solidify his decision with UM, as I would think a top notch kid such as him would.
I've heard the same thing on this board before. I don't know if it's 100% true, but i don't doubt it seeing as to how some OSU fans reacted to the Dodson commitment.
who are these "others" you speak of?
I think he means people from ohio, possibly other recruits? I can imagine it happening because OSU people are filled with rage and will take it out on anybody and everybody.
They are part of the Dharma Initiative.
Come on now... The others (Ben) killed the dharma initiative.
sorry for the ambiguity - others, I assume, meant OSU fans who were pissed he is coming to UM instead of sticking it out at oh-shit-we-lied-and-got-caught-we're-going-to-have-a-shit-storm-for-the-next-three-years University.
Not that I hate OSU, I grew up an OSU fan before I came to Graduate school here.
How much flack do you receive from family or when you tell people in Ohio that you attended Michigan?
haha. A lot. I am reminded how elitist they are and how it is a bunch of egotists.
And I remind them that UM is one of the greatest universities in the world, and how much better Denard is than Pryor, and how much cooler AA is than Columbus.
That usually shuts them up pretty fast.
Ahh yes, shut them up by acting in the exact manner they accused you of acting. How brilliant. :)
that was the joke.
...THE oh-shit-we-lied-and-got-caught-we're-going-to-have-a-shit-storm-for-the-next-three-years University?
you win comment of the day. Bravo.
No insider info, but given my experiences just driving through Ohio with a Michigan plate, I can imagine that he's taken a fair amount of good-natured shit, and a fair amount of not-so-good-natured shit.
haha. great answer. Coming from a family of OSU fans, I think you might be right.
Kirk Herbstreit nods in agreement...
Correct.
some people are going to give you shit for signing with Michigan when they live in Ohio. The thing people hate the most from Ohio is The University of Michigan, and it's a serious hatred by a lot of people. Just go into Ohio wearing Michigan gear and see what happens. People will not only give you dirty looks, but some will even say obscenities to you. So, I could only imagine what happens when someone commits to the greatest University in the world ... Michigan, and they were born and raised in Ohio.
Haha, that post really segued into your signiture perfectly
Edit: sorry this was supposed to be in reply to Blue in South Bend's post
Dennis?
Had no idea you were that hot.
You don't want to mess with some of the serious college football fans expecting a player to be coming to the team. When Tom Lemming says he's almost positive a guy is coming to your team it's a fairly safe bet.
I remember hearing about the Manning family receiving death threats when Peyton committed to Tennessee instead of Ole Miss. It hurts to lose a good recruit but especially when you think they are a lock to come to your team and some football fans take things a bit too seriously.
This makes me glad to be a part of the Big Ten. (Not to be a dick)
This shouldn't be a surprise as we have all seen the character that their players, coaches, and fans show. NO CLASS!
I once wore a Michigan shirt to a Lake Erie Monsters game, and I recieved flack from many people. Telling me Michigan should move to the MAC, blah blah blah. I don't dare put anything Michigan on my vehicle.
I live in Toledo, which is sorta part of Michigan anyway (one war away from being part of it). Therefore, I can wear UM gear everyday (which I generally do anyway) and can plaster my car and house with UM stuff.
I have a UM birdhouse for goodness sakes!
That's good, because I am going to be a freshman at BGSU in the fall. I won't be afraid to wear any Michigan stuff now. Would have loved to have gone to UM, but the out of state tuition is just too much.
you should be good. MAC schools are kind of neutral ground anyway, especially UToledo and BGSU. I went to UT for my UG and BG for my Masters. People try to get excited for the football there, but it is kind of bush-league, and inside everyone knows it. Therefore when you walk in with UM shirt, noone can say much. Well, as long as it is not 2008...
I'm headed to Columbus for a wedding in a few weeks and have a few M stickers on my car. Would it be wise to remove them?
I'd like to avoid getting my windows broken.
for 3 years now without incident, but it is sorta subtle. Actually seeing more and more Michigan decals recently around town. But you never know what one wacko you might run into...
Depends how easily they come off. We have some M magnets that we put on the car on the way to away games, and we always remove them before leaving the car. It's more to avoid people stealing the magnets than it is to avoid people breaking the windows. They can still see the block M license plate, after all.
Wouldn't surprise me, considering that a couple OSU commits have had to hide their interest in Michigan after getting negative attention for saying they were looking around.
When the nicest thing you own is a 5 year old OSU sweatshirt, I guess the decisions of 17 year olds can really fuck your life up.
and have sported Michigan gear since becoming a fan in 1987 when I was eight years old ( Earle Bruce's last game loss). My family, co-workers, and friends all give me crap. I have an "ALL IN" towel hanging above my desk/workbench and get comments weekly about it. Both of my monitors have Michigan screensavers on them, when my computer has problems the predictable qoute: "if that Michigan shit wasn't on there..." occurs. My favorite, so original, worthless nut fan comment is "Fuck Michigan." I usually have really good insightful comebacks and people leave me alone or reason with me. Being 6'4" and 300lbs helps too. I bleed blue but am still a realist which saves grace also.
At any sporting event you go to in Ohio they will play that damn song and spell that four letter word. I told the deejay at my wedding not to play any TOSU songs no matter what. My uncle got the mic and chanted it anyway. My wife and I walked in to Ufer saying "band take the field" and then "The Victors" which was awesome. Sorry to be longwinded, it is just hard to find people around me that appreciate being a Michigan fan. This is just me, a fan and a snippet of what I deal with. I can not imagine what a high schooler would go through especially a Michigan commit. I love how people think you have to root for the local team just because you live there.
It sure looks like he doesn't care what they think. He was at the Michigan Camp today (not camping, just watching) and was hanging out with Mattison most of the day. Several times did I see him talking with Devin Gardner and Coach Hoke, and I also noticed he had a long conversation with Van Bergen on at least one occasion.
Can I just say, you suck?
My father's day was spent cleaning up poopy diapers and telling my kids to stay out of the toilet.
Was that open to the public, or are you somebody important?
Well I like to think I'm someone important, but when reality sets in I'll realize that I'm just another camper.
Tom Strobel was asked, are you concerned about the rumors that "others" are giving you grief about commiting to Michigan ?
Tom's Answer... It does not matter what other's think, Can't wait to get on the field and start putting QB's on their back !!!!
Ohio state fans will talk about a recruit as the next great buckeye, but the minute he signs with michigan he becomes a mac player who isnt good enough to play for them. These are the same things they said about ringer.
Anyone who is surprised people in Ohio are giving this kid shit don't need to look any further then these gems from a Bucknuts thread regarding Ejuan Price's pending LOI release from tsio:
"Go away Price. F U."
"Break a leg, Ejuan......literally."
"Good riddance. Sounds like Price is afraid of a little competition."
"turd.....didn't like him in the first place."
Good for Ejuan, Strobel, Pittman, and every other kid who sees the big picture and gets the hell out of the cess pool.
My wife used to be an EMT in Dublin and they worked the osu games. Whenever it was the Michigan game she would catch all kinds of shit from the players but she just told them that she was the one with the needles and that usually shut them up.
Ohioans are so ignorant i have lived here ten years, and could easily something like this happening. I am from Toledo, OH and I really believe this is one of the reasons why Chris Wormley hasn't committed to us. He is so pushed by everyone to go to OSU. I have thrown against him and every meet some guy from town that thinks he know something comes up to him and tries to sway him. Many fans think he is a lock. Thats just Ohio fans for you.
They just don't know it yet.
It's certainly taking a hit. But it isn't dying, at least until August.
USC got to oversign and prepare for the darkness, OSU will not. We haven't heard if the NCAA is going to delay the August date due to recent findings or add to it or make it two hearings all of which are bad. Does the current staff get the axe? Gene Smith get the axe? New AD usually equal new HC's. IMHO they might salvage a good 2011 but they will be crippled for at least 6 years after.
