A question about redshirting

Submitted by rastafari on
In reference to Davion Rogers as noted on Mgoblog: Rogers will definitely redshirt. In that year he'll hopefully be able to add tons and tons of muscle, possibly getting into the 230-pound range. As a redshirt freshman, he will probably contribute on some special teams, perhaps as the Brandon Graham-style Designated Punt Blocker. Question: What are the rules regarding redshirting? What does it really mean in terms of participation in live games? Just curious as I have never really understood all of the implications.

This should help you: http://www.ncaa.org/wps/portal/ncaahome?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/wps/wcm/con… "It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition." A player can also receive a "Medical Redshirt," if the athlete's season is lost due to injury.

you are not allowed to play in a live game at all unless you are unredshirted. I think you are pretty much designated to the scout team. I don't think that you go with the team to away games either.

I'm not so sure that redshirting prevents you from traveling by rule, but just that the NCAA limits the number of players you can dress at road games and you don't want to waste bringing someone you will never play. Cause I know for a fact that dressing doesn't ruin your redshirt so I think it might be involved in numbers at road games more than anything.

Even though he redshirted, Patrick Omameh traveled with the team for a couple away games in 2008. Of course, that was partly due to our horribly thin depth on the offensive line that year, but...well...there's your answer. In case of an injury at a position with little depth, sometimes guys who are being redshirted still travel.

When people say "contribute as a redshirt freshman," they usually mean as a second-year player, after redshirting for their first year.

Can a player start out as a redshirt for a season but if he needs to play for some reason (injuries, etc.) he can play in a game and the season will count towards one of his four years? *For example could DG start out as a redshirt but if Tate or Denard get hurt or the coaches feel he becomes the best QB could they put him in? I've heard the term "burning a redshirt" and I assume it has something to do with that. *I'm not arguing that DG should redshirt or not, that's just the best example I can think of.

A player isn't a redshirt until the season is over; until then, he is just somebody who hasn't played yet. You don't have to declare somebody a redshirt, because it happens automatically. In your example, the coaches can put DG in at any time--they can even wait until the Rose Bowl to play him.
