Question about changing depth charts

Submitted by Wendyk5 on
I have only ever followed MIchigan football and I'm a girl. There, I said it. So, with that said, here's my question: Do the depth charts of all football teams change so much? Are depth charts based on what happens in practice and games, or just the games? Are our pieces constantly moving because RR hasn't figured out the right formula yet? If I was a player, it would be disheartening to lose my spot because I had one bad game. Or is that just life on the football field? All of you who have football knowledge, please clue me in.

That's definitely life on the football field. Rodriguez and his staff continue to stress the fact that no spot is "given" and competition for playing time and starting positions is always on. Generally you'd want players to be motivated by being beaten out or losing their spot, but in many cases (as we've seen with transfers) not playing has a tendency to drive players away from working and wanting to compete. That's why it's so amazing to see so much talent go to USC. Players know they're competing against the best, and yet they continue to go there because they know they'll have a shot at starting and maybe a shot at the NFL as well.
