Question about B1G tourney seeding

Submitted by jethro34 on

So heading into tomorrow's games, I think most fans will be rooting for Michigan and Ohio to win, so Michigan can hang a banner.  I'm among that group.  Get the sure banner for regular season co-champs.

But looking ahead to the B1G tourney, what determines seeding in the event of a 3-way tie at the top?  I'm envisioning a world in which we could end up with the #3 seed if there's a 3-way tie, while if Michigan wins and State wins, MSU is the sure #1, and Michigan is the sure #2.

I think I read somewhere that State secured the #1 seed regardless, so it doesn't matter that much since #2 and #3 are on the same side of the bracket and if favorites all win they would have to play in the semi-final anyhow.

I guess the biggest reason it makes a difference is that first game.  The #2 seed gets a first round bye and then likely plays Iowa, perhaps Northwestern.  The #3 team, on the other hand, likely plays either Purdue or possibly Indiana in that game.

Again, I don't think the potential difficulty of that game is worth cheering for State instead of Ohio, but wondering if anyone knew how the tie-breakers work to see what the potential scenarios are.

One thing is for sure, UM cannot lay an egg at Penn State like they did earlier at Iowa or on senior night vs Purdue.

What you said is true, if Ohio wins they're the 2 seed, is Staee wins then we're the 2 seed.

Of course this is all moot if we get upset by PSU

No - if we beat PSU, we're guaranteed the #2 seed no matter what.  We hold the tiebreaker with Ohio.  If they beat MSU, then all three champs will be 2-2 against each other and the tiebreaker goes to the record against the #4 team, which is Wisconsin.  We went 1-0 against them and Ohio went 1-1, so we get the nod.

I posted this in another thread yesterday, but here are all the possible B1G Tournament seedings:

  1. MSU
  2. Michigan or OSU
  3. Michigan or OSU
  4. Wisconsin
  5. Indiana or Purdue
  6. Indiana or Purdue
  7. Iowa or Northwestern
  8. Iowa or Illinois or Northwestern
  9. Illinois or Northwestern
  10. Minnesota or Nebraska
  11. Minnesota or Nebraska
  12. PSU

Tiebreaking scenarios:

2/3: Michigan if win OR OSU loss, OSU if win AND Michigan loss

5/6: winner of Purdue at Indiana

7: winner of Northwestern at Iowa

8: Iowa if loss, Illinois if win AND Northwestern loss, Northwestern if loss AND Illinois loss

9: Illinois if loss, Northwestern if loss AND Illinois win

10/11: winner of Nebraska at Minnesota

"I think most fans will be rooting for Michigan and Ohio to win, so Michigan can hang a banner."

You mean not ALL fans will be rooting for this to happen?

As for the question at hand, I seem to think that they will go by overall record. But I'm not exactly sure.

Agreed. All M fans need to root for this. I want this team to win a piece of that championship and don't  care how they get it.

As far as the B1G tourney, it's nice to have no pressure, no bubble talk. The only thing it may determine is how high the seed will be in the dance!

I would say that certainly not all fans are rooting for it.  Unfortunately there is that miniature part of the fan base that is UM first, state of Michigan second.  I know some fans that feel like Michigan needs to win to get the praise, and that cheering for others to lose isn't the way to go about it.  I completely disagree with that.

Still others hate Ohio so much that even if an Ohio victory helps UM they simply cannot bring themselves to do it.  I can understand the bitter taste of cheering for that school, but I want a banner.

was worded very badly. You made it sound like most, rather than all, of us would be rooting for Michigan to win. I know what you meant, but I've yet to hear a single UM fan say they would prefer MSU to win tomorrow. It would be petty and stupid even if our biggest rival in BB was OSU. It's not.

Michigan isnt the 2 seed is if they lose to Penn State and OSU beats MSU.

B. Multiple team tie:

1. Results of head-to-head competition during the regular-season. a. When comparing records against the tied teams, the team with the higher winning percentage shall prevail, even if the number of games played against the team or group are unequal (i.e., 2-0 is better than 3-1, but 2-0 is not better than 1-0).

Michigan, OSU, and MSU are all 1-1 vs each other if OSU beats MSU.

2. If the remaining teams are still tied, then each tied team's record shall be compared to the team occupying the highest position in the final regular-season standings, continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.

Wisconsin will be the 4th seed.

MSU is 2--0 vs Wisconsin. Michigan is 1-0 vs Wisconsin. OSU is 1-1.   OSU is third place.

Then it goes to Indiana/Purdue.

We split with both, MSU swept Purdue.  MSU first, Michigan 2nd.

My bad.  If it's not on the front page I don't see it.  And when I try to click to the next page, all I see is more diaries.  Love the site, but if I could change one thing it would be more listing for the recent topics and fewer listing of mgo.licio.us

But that's like asking Denard to get 570 yards of offense in a game instead of 558.

We control our own destiny for a 2 seed.  The only way we get a three seed is if we lose tomorrow and Ohio State wins, which would be heartbreaking if that happened....

From the Detroit News LINK

A look at the No. 2 seeding scenarios for the Big Ten tournament next week (Michigan State is the No. 1 seed no matter the outcome of this weekend’s games):
If Michigan wins and Ohio State loses: Michigan is No. 2 and Ohio State No. 3
If Ohio State wins and Michigan loses: Ohio State is No. 2 and Michigan is No. 3
If both Michigan and Ohio State lose: Michigan is No. 2
If both Michigan and Ohio State win: For Michigan to get the No. 2 seed, Wisconsin must beat Illinois. If Wisconsin loses, Indiana must beat Purdue. For Ohio State to get the No. 2 seed, Wisconsin must beat Illinois and Purdue must beat Indiana.

If we win tomorrow and our first round game, we do no worse than a four seed. Getting two wins at the BTT should mean a three seed. Win it, and we have a chance at a two. (!)

but can somebody tell me why the divisions don't seem to apply in the conference to basketball? I don't understand that :/

The divisions are solely to determine the two participants in the football championship game. If we had a basketball championship game instead of a tourney in which everyone is invited, we would likely use the divisions. Otherwise, there's really no point.

Husker4Life has been a good contributor here, as far as I've ever seen. We also have two or three Ohio posters on here fairly regularly, as well as four or five Sparties and at least one ND poster.

Everyone I was thinking of to come up with those numbers contribute pretty solidly to discussions, and add good perspective. Not many M fans can answer a question about Ohio's scholarship needs or Nebraska's second string QB, and we generally appreciate answers on topics like that.

A couple of notes after the Minnesota game:

Minnesota is locked into 10.

As it turns out, Penn State is not locked into 12, they can still get 11 with a win or a Purdue win.
