Question about awesomely profane penalty chant at Yost

Submitted by mdngoblue on
I haven't been part of the student section at Yost for a few years as I graduated from U of M in 2006, but I still go to most of the games. The other night, as Lake State took one of many penalties and the chant started up, the students ended it (after all the words had been shared with the offending player) with a motion that looked like they were milking a cow, with each hand going up while the other goes down. It almost looks like they're pretending to climb a ladder. Can someone enlighten me as to why they do this?

The chant currently stands as: "Chump, dick, wuss, douchebag, asshole, prick, cheater, bitch, whore, slut, cocksucker, ski-poler." Since I graduated in the early 90's, I'm not entirely familiar with what "ski-poler" means, although I assume it's making some allusion to male self-gratification.

*mounts high horse* If Red wants this thing gone, then it should be done away with. Not saying that I haven't partaken in it a time or two, but I was previously unaware that Red hated it so much. Hi-Yo Silver, away!! There is a thread with bad grammar that MUST be corrected!

I know you outside of the internets TTUwolverine, so hopefully you don't take this personally, but... You could not be any more wrong about this. It's hockey. It's college rivalries. It's what being a fan should be (high levels of passion). Sure it's uncouth, but for a Friday and Saturday night hockey game on a campus that loves sports, a 'family atmosphere' would mean the arena is empty of students.

How do we know that Red ACTUALLY wants it gone and didn't just say that because the University told him too? It's definitely not something he generally brings up an I think if he actually "Hated" it, he would make it an issue more than one time before a game once. My guess would be that he's ambivalent, made a comment once because the University told him to and deals with it. I would also guess that nobody on the ice, on either side, really cares and it's just the University wanting to keep it's image that is against it, which is a fair concern on the University's side. I would say that it's reached a balance where the students do it anyways and the University doesn't like it and has a couple guards put in place to maintain it's image because it's able to say it's trying to deal with it. I honestly don't have a strong feeling either way, it's fun the first couple times, but it gets a little old eventually. The question becomes, what can you replace it with that the students would accept? Because ultimately, that's what needs to be done to get rid of it, not Event Staff throwing people out, not Red expressing his displeasure, but somebody stepping up and coming up with a legitimate replacement. I don't think anything else would work, short of the the University doing something really extreme to curtail it, like throwing people out and revoking their tickets for the rest of the season.

There has got to be someone out there that can come up with something creative and not-quite-so-obscene, while also being loud and obnoxious. Not that I have any ideas, but we've got some great fans and students that should be able to come up with something else.

When did the "douchebag" hand motion go back to just a point? When I had season tickets 7ish years ago, there was a different motion for douchebag (a little like a ~ with your arm) but that has since gone away.

When I was a student the cheer contained much less profanity. I recall that it ended with "your momma smells like elderberries". To this day I have yet to smell an elderberry.

The only word they have a problem with is "cocksucker." And Athletic Department officials will tell you just that. The remainder of the cheer would get by censors on network television. The students take out "cocksucker," which is a rather recent addition anyway, there's really not much of a problem here. That's not too much to ask.

They were trying to kill the cheer long before "cocksucker" was added, especially after we were fined ($10,000?) during the NCAA regionals several years ago (2002?). "Cocksucker" is definitely a huge issue--not only is it more offensive than the other words but it seems to carry well across the ice (it's shockingly hard in general to tell what students are saying when you're on the other side) so getting students to drop it became a bigger issue but they'd still like to get rid of the entire cheer.

Replace with Shegos. They are synonymous anyway. I'd also like to hear "She Sucks--> She Blows" when Shegos makes a shegos. Or perhaps a Worst Ref Ever...clap clap clapclapclap
