Question about AC Joint Sprain

Submitted by Blue_Bull_Run on
How easy is it to get that injury? I've pretty much accepted that Tate wont be healthy again this year, but I'm wondering what the odds are that he gets the same injury again next year? With his playing style, he'll definitely keep getting exposed to hits. But I'm guessing it takes a particularly unlucky hit to get that injury?

as with Bradford getting sacked and coming down on the shoulder. You can teach a QB to twist his body to avoid that type of fall unless the defender is rigth on top of him. I would guess that Tate did his on his dive into the end zone against IU. If you watch the replay he came down on his throwing shoulder.

As with most sprains, a good amount of rest, anti-inflamatory meds, and stretching can help heal. He might be at a slightly increased risk of getting the same injury again next year, just as if you sprained your ankle as a teenager it might be more prone to tweak years down the line if not healed properly at the time of the injury. If I had to guess, he'll be fine next year re: that AC joint.

Anti inflammatories don't help healing with rest. They inhibit healing - inflammation is a sign of the body's attempt to heal. Again, assuming you are resting. If you aren't resting, AIDs can help with pain, and then can help prevent disuse injuries. But, the best "cure" is rest.

Sorry for the late reply, but you are wrong about AIDrugs. They DO help with healing; when a joint is injured, chemicals (histamines and/or arachadonic acid etc) are released which causes inflammation of the joint and surrounding tissues. This actually inhibits healing of the shoulder and joint. Decreasing inflammation also helps ligaments and tendons stretch better, which helps healing. You're correct in the basic concept that inflammtipn is part of healing/fighting an insult to the body (a fever is a form of inflammation) but incorrect in the idea of inflammation and tissue injuries. And no, it wasn't me ho negged you.

I have an AC joint injury from 7 years ago, and it still isn't healed. Mine was a grade 2. They are graded from 1-6, 6 being the worst, a total separation of the bone structures. There is a ligament that holds the two bones structures together, and that is what gets the stress. As stated by other posters, it is from landing squarely on your shoulder and it hurts like hell. Tate will probably have to immobilize it to really get it to heal completely depending on the severity. I just hope he can get through the season without making it worse.
