Querrey up 2 sets on Djokovic

Submitted by uncle leo on

Not sure who my tennis fans are in here, but if Sam manages to pull this off tomorrow, this has to be one of the bigger upsets in American tennis history, no?

The guy has been basically Isner lite his whole career and has done NOTHING of note in any major tournament. He's absoutely on fire, and then the rain comes and match is suspended till tomorrow.

I have a sinking feeling that Novak will wake up and just be on fire tomorrow, but at least we can dare to dream for USA tennis, right??

I'd rather see Djokovic make history than see Querrey pull off the upset. There will be many upsets in our lifetime but not too often will a player have a strong shot at a golden slam year.

Do something worthwhile. I'm all set with the Djoker dominating. If he can take him out, the path to the quarters or semis is WIDE open. Maybe him or Sock can come through without Novak there.

I'm rooting for history over USA on this one. USA isn't exactly a perpetual underdog in tennis. We've had eras of dominance. Now if we were talking USMNT it'd be a different story but it's not like USA tennis hasn't ever accomplished anything.

Has been irrelevant for basically an entire decade. This would be huge.

I like Novak, nothing against him. But he's won enough tournaments. Time for him to get upset. He's been impervious to it. And a USA guy doing it would be awesome, IMO.

The USA youth has awhile before it will even begin to dent the stars. We have Tiafoe, Fritz, Mmoh, and...? Our best player can't move. Sock is very erratic.

Especially on the 4th of July weekend, would be great to see an American pull off this upset.  And how do you vote against someone named Sam, and he must be someone's uncle to boot!

Key question, will his serve still be dominating tomorrow, great drama in store for us!!!

The true shocker would be if Sam can pull off the upset AFTER Novak has had 24 hours to regroup. Sam is well known for huge lapses in level of play at key moments in a match (namely, closing them out) and being a headcase. That being said, if he can pull it off it would be one of the biggest upsets in mens tennis in recent memory (last 5 years?)  considering the absolutely dominant level of play from Joker.

I see both sides of it. The pros are incredible at quickly regaining their focus after getting popped early in the mouth. Who knows how he will respond thinking about being down 2-0 over a day?

I definitely see this going 5, sadly. I just want SOMETHING good to happen for USA tennis. Screw the historic stuff. I want our players to do something special.

You like Querrey to be the next good one? He's like 30 years old and off the top of my head, hasn't even made the round of 16 in any tournament.

Sock, maybe. USA tennis will not be just fine. They haven't been fine in a decade since Roddick won the US Open. I don't even remember the last time we had a player in the quarter's since 2009 Wimbledon Final??

Yes and no. On one hand I do think Querrey can be really good for a couple years at least. He has a nice game. Sock isn't too far behind and he's young. But if the past 10 years is any indication, I have no faith in American tennis these days. I miss the 90s.

They like to have no play on the middle Sunday so they can tend to the grass to have it ready for the final week of the tournament. This will only be the 4th time (I think) that play has taken place on the middle Sunday. The crowds are usually VERY lively though which provides for good atmosphere.

I doubt he pulls the upset now. Heck even if it didn't rain Novak probably makes a comeback. He's just frickin relentless. A match against that man looks so incredibly grueling. Unfortunately there's just no one that can truly stand up to him. Rafa is falling apart, Roger is getting old, Murray never seemed to take it to the next level. Novak has an opportunity to really rack up the majors at this point. Kind of like Roger in his prime before Nadal. Sam Querrey is not stopping him.

Another level compared to where he's been his entire career. His service game has been ridiculous in this match. He's going toe for toe with Djoker on every shot. He didn't back down at any point, even when giving up a triple break point late in the first set.

It's going to take a miracle for Sam to pull the upset, given the fact that he's never really done anything of note in his career. But damnit, the US MEN'S tennis federation needs something like this.

Thanks, I'm glad to hear that. I haven't watched any of it. Nice to see Sam stepping up against the top dog. I think the rain delay is a really bad break though. We'll see but I've seen this before and it usually all falls apart for Novaks opponent.

Typically when I see Sam play, he battles for a set or two, and then just whimpers away. I have no clue who this guy was. Yeah, Djokovic wasn't at his best, but he's still the #1. And if the #1 isn't playing well, he's still really, really damn good. But Sam matched him shot for shot, and was absolutely lacing his serve.

I planned a big Kohl's trip before the match started. And I ended up watching the whole first set and tracking the 2nd while I was driving. I'm hoping he makes it happen. The poor guy has just never really built on his potential.

And crazy to find out, the Tigers drafted him to play baseball.

Sam has basically played out of his mind. Novak looked terrible for a large portion of the match. I still see this being an uphill battle tomorrow morning for Sam, but if he can serve tomorrow anywhere near the way he did today he's got a chance. I still think Novak wins it in 5 though. Sam has a history of letting his nerves get to him in pressure matches.

Would have loved to see Serena lose that close one today and this American pull off the upset tomorrow. Generally root for all underdogs in tennis like clockwork.

A lot of unforced errors on Querrey's part today. I guess I don't know how unforced they are when you're playing one of the best of all time, but he's making it harder on himself.

Querrey is playing himself into a 5th set. He's missed two relatively easier shots that would have put him up 4-1 in the tiebreak. Instead he's down 3-2, and that's probably going to cost him the 4th set.

Wow!  I didn't think he could pull it off.   I thought he was cracking when Djokovic finally broke him, but then he bounced right back to break him.  Clutch.

I wanted to see Djokovic get the calendar slam, but now I'm going to be pulling for Fed to turn back the clock once more.
