QB-Turner Baty, the mystery prospect

Submitted by MGoCooper on

He's kind of a mystery to most fans, but he's starting to get a little press. If everyone is like me, you were shocked to hear that a Juco QB was at the Michigan-Nebraska game this weekend. Turner attends a city college in San Francisco, but it wasn't for grades. Looks like he may get an offer if the numbers work out for Michigan. He's a really smart kid, he went the Juco route because he one day wanted to play big time division 1 football, instead of going the Ivy League route. He had an offer from Stanford, but didn't seem to be a right fit for him .

He looks like a pretty solid kid to have on the roster in an emergency. Live arm, and can pick up the offense rather quickly.

He would also be an early enrollment. I wouldn't mind grabbing him, because there is no guarantee that Gardner, Bellomy, or Morris will turn out to be good D-1 QB's. He has a top 3 of UM, USC, and Syracuse....

From the article:

Thanks to his unconventional junior college experience, he'll have more eligibility than standard junior college transfers.

"I actually was a full-qualifier coming out of high school, so I don't need to graduate [from junior college]," Baty said. "If I transfer to a school in January, I'll have four years to play three. I think that makes my situation a little bit more attractive than if I only had two years to play two coming out."

(emphasis mine)

2* #100 QB according to Scout

2* NR according to Rivals

Even if he did blow up at a JUCO I have a hard time envisioning him pulling an offer given the talent we have have in our sights for our last few spots (and a solid 3 deep at QB already).  Preferred walk on maybe.  It seems like if we want an insurance policy we'd grab up a 3* that could spend 4 years in the system.  This guy is in and out in two.

Also can be rap/act?  We need to continue the tradition of Coner and Kennedy

A "solid" 3 deep at QB?

You'd feel comfortable with Bellomy playing Saturday?

Here's the reason you take Baty:

What is the QB situation here if Gardner doesn't get his medical redshirt approved for 2014?

The QBs on the roster would be:

Bellomy (RS Junior)

Morris (RS Freshman)

and.................????

Take this guy now and have 4 scholarship QBs on the roster. It helps depth, it helps the Scout Team, it helps the competition at practice.

Did you not see that he would have 3 years of eligibility?  He could sit a year and still have 3 to play.  I don't see the downside here.

Class of 2010, so that means he is currently in his second year at the juco. If he transfers, since it's not an FBS school, doesn't that mean that he doesn't have to redshirt and has 3 years of eligibility? I wonder what Devin would think about that? Right now, he only has to compete with Denard for playing time, next year, he'll have to compete with Denard, Bellomy, and Baty. With the rumblings that he's already frustrated with lack of playing time, I can't imagine he's going to be very happy going forward.

I'm assuming he is talking about that Devin to transfer post amonth or so ago. Devin has proven he is not afraid of competition but, I'd rather see some playmakers on offense than a QB.

I knew him in high school and I can tell you that he is a talented player with the attitude, work ethic, and intelligence to succeed at michigan. He would have gotten a lot more national recognition and recruiting if he had started as a junior but my high school is a football powerhouse and the quarterback that graduated with me was damn good. He makes smart decisions and works quickly through his progressions. Not gonna run like Denard or Devin but has some amount of mobility and a solid arm.

Aside from the fact that we rarely take JuCo prospects (Austin Panter?!), Baty seems like a good fit:

  • He's good enough of a D1 prospect to have earned a scholarship from Stanford/Harbaugh
  • He is a legacy and loves Michigan
  • He appears to have decent to good academics judging by his previous opportunities with the Ivys and Stanford
  • We need quarterback depth; after Denard we only have Gardner and Bellomy on scholarship with Morris coming in two years later

I feel like the first three points alleviate most concerns over taking a JuCo prospect and the last bullet only adds to the reasons why we'd need him.

My only question is where his scholarship would count. Assuming he enrolls at the beginning of 2012 as indicated in the articles, would he go towards our 28 scholarship limit for 2012, be back-dated to the 2011, or count towards the 2010 total of his original graduating class?

I think if Hoke felt getting another qb was a priority we'd have found one by now.  Or at least they would've been pursuing guys like Gunner Kiel.  But I haven't seen any indication we were or are looking to take another qb in this class.

I'm a little surprised its easier to transfer from a JuCo than it would be from, say, Columbia.  Although I guess it gives you more of a chance to focus on football.  Very wierd but interesting.

Recruit one Juco QB with a spotless academic record worthy of offers from Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, get one Juco CB with an academic record of... uh... "equal or lesser value" free.

I really hope Dorsey gets a shot with someone.  He honestly strikes me as someone who is trying to turn his attitude (and life) around, and based on that recent article he clearly would sever an arm to play at Michigan.  But admissions probably had good reason to believe he couldn't make it here.  Baty, hey, why not if we have a leftover schollie on signing day, but not until all the Diamonds, Dunns, Paytons, Darbohs, etc. have taken a pass on it.
