QB transfer D. Prukop not visiting UM before decision

Submitted by RED DAWN on

Prukop opted to take the quick trip to Tuscaloosa over Ann Arbor as Tide OC Lane Kiffin has been aggressively in pursuit. "Alabama is Alabama,” Prukop said. "I just have to go check it out. The downside is I don’t have two-and-a-half days like I did at Oregon. But Alabama runs the pro-style (offense) and that is also enticing to me.

"I had to choose between going on a visit to Michigan and Alabama, and I was just more curious about Alabama. I had to make a lot of decisions in a matter of an hour and half. In my heart, I feel really good about Oregon. But Alabama is just Alabama."

Prukop says he’ll fly back home late Sunday night and hopes to make a decision by Monday.

I remember when "the next qb?" was easier to answer. Grbac to Collins to Dreisbach/Griese to etc. Which is to say that I remember a time where the next qb was not on someone else's college team. Things were much simpler back in my day.

The key question is whether any potential transfer would be favored to win the starting job over O'Korn or the backup job over Speight/Morris/Malzone/Gentry/Peters/whomever else. That's a tall order. Rudock was a no-brainer. Doesn't mean any transfer QB is automatically the best guy for the roster. Basically, I'm saying that if Harbaugh wants someone, then I'm OK with it. Lol.

Why try to better the position and add competition and depth? It's only the QB, not a big deal. Harbaugh knows what he has and who's coming back.  I've even heard that he has an eye for QB talent, but why trust him to manage that position on the roster? We've gotten used to Hoke's approach and it's so much easier.

is such an over reactive strawman jerk-off response. You can be really cordially insightful at times and then you switch to lowest common denominator garbage without cause or explanation. Going with the "sure you know better than the coach" angle now? So original I am beside myself. Stick to the "good Mr. Miggle" because the bad one resides with some of the worst trolls on the Board.

Fuck Alabama. Kiffin has not produced a single successful NFL caliber QB ever. This kid obviously must not be aware of Jim's ability to mold QB's into the best versions of themselves.

I am a little concerned that the level of quarterbacking is still so poor that Jim feels the need for more grad transfer QB's. I really hope someone within the system steps up and takes the job.

I agree with your sentiment, but Bama is where the money is right now.  And that money attracts a great team to put around any skill position player.  How else can two RB's who are very good but not really special win the Heisman in an era when the Heisman was dangerously close to becoming the John Unitas Award v2.

Another transfer won't make or break Michigan.  It would be nice, but I fully believe that someone from the current roster or the incoming Brandon Peters is going to step up and become the QB Jim Harbaugh wants to lead his team.

I guess if you want to stand in the pocket all day and either hand it off to an ngram or a Henry or play cach with a Julio Jones or a Cooper, sure...but you don't really learn how to be an NFL QB at Alabama even under Saban.

I don't know of a coach at any level that does not realize the importance of the ability of a qb to use his feet to offest the problems of a tremendous pass rush. Although Stoops incorporates a bit of read/run option, Mayfield generally uses his feet to extend passing plays, but will run in that is the wisest course of action. I did myself, 45 years ago and instructed my qbs likewise: pick up the first down and whatever more they offer prior to taking an unnecessary hit. Of course, having a mobile qb should require having some designated plays for him to run, not a bad thing either. Watch Cam and tell me he's not a successful pro qb.

This argument is so dismissive. There are limited scholarships and for every qb we have sitting on the bench in the name of competition it means we are thinner at a spot somewhere else on the field. I'd love to have more competition at lb and rb too and would take a grad transfer at either of those spots over another qb transfer.

You might want to re-read the thread from yesterday about grad transfers. There were some good explanations in there for why you won't see many grad transfer linebackers, and running back is somewhat similar.

Personally, I would like to see Michigan pull in fifteen 5-stars each year and have SI swimsuit models be the cheerleaders. Just because I wish for it doesn't make it realistic.

its everyone on these boards that jump to conclusions about what harbaugh may or may not be thinking. he made the perfect move last year to upgrade the qb position. why do you think that means he will do that every year?

people are sure quick to dismiss some pretty talented rs  freshman and everyother qb on the roster just because they havent played yet.

Well, it could have been him instead? Alabama runs through the running game and their great DL and OL. We don't have that kind of OL yet and we would rely on QB. So he would have more chance to prove himself? I don't know. Just my logic.

Kind of odd to me. He visited Oregon and Bama? I don't know anything about this QB, but not typical that these schools would be recruiting the same type QB.

Alabama has made some changes to its offense. I'm not sure how much you've watched them over the past couple years. Last year Blake Sims ran for 350 yards and 7 touchdowns. Jake Coker isn't as athletic, but he ran for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns and they run some read options with him. And Barnett was Rivals' #2 dual-threat guy (although some sites listed him as a pro-style QB).

Oregon and Alabama offenses are polar opposites from one another. How is he considering both of those schools?

Either way, I'm fine with this. Eventually we need to trust the guys we currently have in-house to develop and get the job done.

Besides Vernon Adams this season, who was the last Oregon QB that was a grad transfer? And how long ago was it that Wilson played at Wisconsin? Grad transfers are fine and we'll but high recruiting is the life blood of a program and if we can't show a recruited high QB that they will get opportunity play consecutive seasons at UM, then we won't be able to land those blue chip QB's in future. How Peters is handled will be a test case.

And look at Wiscy after Wilson left, look at their QBs. Look at how great Vernon Adams was. Kansas is also natorious for bringing 5th year guys or juco QBs. The point is its really hard to build chemistry within the team for one year only. Its rare to get a guy come in (Wilson) and be elite.

Why do you eventually have to go in house?

Because it kills QB recruiting, for one. Why would a QB recruit, especially a high profile QB recruit, ever want to come here if all they see is the coaching staff perpetually handing the job off to grad transfers?

Kids won't come here if they don't think they'd get a shot. Also consider the fact that you have to have your offense completely re-develop its chemistry over and over every year with a new signal caller.
