QB sneak on the goal line?

Submitted by BlueChitown on
Okay, the goal line stand has been discussed endlessly, I know, so sorry for bringing it up again. I asked this question in another thread, but I think I was late to the discussion, as it went unanswered. QUESTION: Could RR have been reluctant to call QB sneak because of the inexperience of our center Moosman? How much does that play into the effectiveness of the sneak? Seems the sneak would require first a clean snap and then an immediate jump up to block. We've seen Moosman flub on a similar action before (with our back to the other endzone). Just asking, because on the 1, QB sneak and fall-forward seems logical. But I'm wondering if there is more to it than that.

Marching into enemy territory, arriving with depleted forces (by some accounts REL was down to 58.33% effectives), it was important for Lee's separate forces to strike at once and not allow Meade's forces to exploit their shorter line of defense. The ANV attacks were delivered piecemeal and dealt with by those men in blue.

Most qb sneaks just require the center to snap and cut block the defender over the ball to take his legs out and allow the qb to fall over the pile. I don't think that is too complicated for Moosman.

i said that in the earlier discussion as well. rr seems to have a reluctance to call it at anytime. there have been other opportunities where it would have made sense, although this, to me, was the most obvious; especially, since tate was under center anyway.

IIRC, Illinois was doubling Moosman. That would have made it tough for him to get leverage, and that's probably why we didn't call a sneak. Also, Tate's a little small to move the pile.

I have problems with switching out the QB just at the goal line. Tate took them down the field. I say let him lead them into the end zone. I'd say the same if D.Rob had been in the same situation (as he was in Iowa). For me, I'd have given it to the Grady over Brown. But like you said, 20/20. And if you tell me before last week that we get 4 shots running straight at the end zone from the 1, I'd have said we get the TD whoever carries.

Surely you are not referring to the same Denard that fumbles the ball every 4 snaps and looks about as nervous on the field as a Rich Rod looks pissed on the sidelines. I would not, under any circumstance, put Denard in the game for that situation. He is small and plays nervous. Pretty much worst case scenario for a goal line QB sneak.

short rollout, with a pass to Koger, perhaps on 2nd down. I'd have liked to see that play in that situation. But then, this is all second guessing.

a few times this season why we don't sneak on 3rd or 4th and 1. i wonder if we are afraid of breaking tate or something because i don't think we've done a QB sneak this year.

I must say for the last 2 years we have been prety consistent. 3rd and 4th and less than a yard we line up in the I and hand off to Minor for a 1st down. I like the qb sneak much more, but it has worked..mostly because Minor usually refuses to be denied other than the blocking or play call.

Ok - so I get that Minor was dinged, but if he's healthy enough for 4th down at the 1, isn't he healthy enough for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down too? Brown is a talented player, but his talent isn't running through walls. If Minor got those 3 carries, he's in, despite little room and the total lack of creativity.

I agree with you, but I think you sell it short Minor scores on all 3 especially the stretch play that was a little off tackle. Brown ran those plays like a Mangina, he was looking for a hole, he had a soft spot he had to stick his head in there and say I'm not gonna be denied and run right into Ortmann and push the pile.

One the one hand, I might have called a sneak once. On the other hand, Tate isn't a big guy, and a sneak could result in a big shot on his bad shoulder. I think I would have had Minor in there right away, despite the bad ankle. RAGE TIME!

This might sound arrogant, but if you are Michigan, you really should believe that you can get the ball one yard in four tries against a bottom-feeder like Illinois. It didn't work out and the game went to shit. Big deal. It's over now and there is this week to worry about. The bad news is that you can only win one game at a time, but the good news is that you can only lose one game at a time. I am willing to bet that RR has this team motivated and confident on Saturday: something along the lines of "let's win this one and worry about the others later."

I have been wondering what is up with a bunch of coaches choosing not to QB sneak from the 1 yard line. I mean it is literally snap the ball, get a push, and fall forward. I do not mean to make it overly simple but it really is. Earlier this year I saw Mississippi State get down to the 1 against LSU and choose not to sneak it. I just don't get it. Either coaches are out smarting themselves, but foregoing the sneak from the one is a trend that I have noticed both in the college game and the NFL.

I would have liked to see a different formation at least one of the tries. Go 4 wide and spread out their D. They knew we were going to run it, but at least get some of their defensive players out of the box. That being said, I can't blame Rich Rod for wanting to shove it down the other team's throat. Normally, we could get a yard.

I was a center, and continue to believe that any decently executed sneak should get 1-1.5 yards. Easily. From the 1 I understand not sneaking. From the 1 inch, I want to see that call. You raise an interesting issue with Moosman, as to why one might not have been called last week. Another possible reason is that we have a very light (not to mention inexperienced) QB, who we cannot lose to injury and who has coughed the ball up a few times near the goal line. Handing off 4 times showed confidence in the line and asked less of Tate. But I would have loved a sneak or PA pass. Oh well...
