QB injuries already?

Submitted by crg on
This is my first discussion thread - apologies for any etiquette breaches: I caught the spring game on BTN2Go - was generally impressed by the play so early in the year. Was a bit concerned when I saw Malzone leave with some issue with his left hand (he had been doing reasonably well). The announcers did not say anything about it (that I caught), but could this be a problem? The team is not exactly short on QB options, but considering that Baylor was forced to go to their 4th and 5th string QBs at the end of the season, one never knows how much depth is truly needed. Was there any news of the injury? Thanks. EDIT: I see that many people have responded negatively to this post and I will re-iterate that 1) I just wanted to see if any official word on Malzone's injury was known and if it will effect his availability by fall and 2) I am NOT claiming that this is likely to have an impact on the team as a whole since he was unlikely to be in top 3 for that spot. I brought up the Baylor example to show that this is not a purely hypothetical problem.

I don't think that it is all that knee-jerk; we practice it a lot around here before putting it into the thread.

But in reality, it's a thread "worried" about the possibility of the 4th/5th option at QB possibly being hurt, and how that would affect the team.  I'll say this now, if UM is down to its 4th or 5th QB, they are already past the type of preparation you can plan for.  Hell, Baylor just ran the option with a WR at that point.

I haven't seen anything posted about Malzone.  Someone on the game thread mentioned Malzone's hand was injured, but that's about it.  Just checked MLive and nothing was posted there.

Will never play QB at Michigan. He's at best 4th on the depth chart right now, and I bet by the time the season rolled around if push came to shove and the other 3 QBs disappeared, it would be Peters over Malzone. He's a MAC level talent at best, and will have to transfer to that level of school to have a shot to play. If he wants to stay and earn a Michigan degree, more power to him.

4 star with a top (non Michigan) offer of Pitt or CMU. The star value of a player often isn't as telling as his offer list. I'll take a 3 star with Florida, LSU, Ohio State, Texas and USC offers over a 4 star with top offers of CMU and Pitt. Fact is, when you watch him play, he isn't very good. Easily the 5th best QB on the depth chart. And to be quite honest, if it came to playing Malzone, I wouldn't be opposed to switching Gentry back to QB.

His other offers football powers Bowling Green, Akron, Toledo, Wake Forest, Western. He's short, not athletic, and I haven't seen one ounce of tape that indicates he's a Power 5 level QB. If he has any ambition of regular playing time in college his only opinion will be too tranfser to a lower tier program, otherwise he's here for the degree. That's just the hard truth.

It's my personal belief that if all of these scouts were truly THAT good at talent evaluation and projecting a player's career, they would have a coaching job or be a recruiting coordinator somewhere. Not that I have any qualms with scouts, but I think I would trust the coaches handing out the scholarship offers a bit more. If Pitt and CMU coaches are the top coaches that want you, you're probably not THAT good. You're not a 4 star. Sure, it's cool to follow the rankings and get a bunch of highly ranked guys. But it really means nothing. If you're good, you're good. If you're bad, well then you're bad. Malzone is a mid major level QB. He's 5th at best on the depth chart and 6th if you move Gentry back.

Most recruiting sites employ low paid recent journalism grads that watch some highlights and people take their word as "scouts". I think the highly ranked 5 star projections are usually correct, but that's like people projecting the top 10-20 picks in the 1st round of the NFL draft. Anybody who's watched football for 5 minutes can tell you guys like Calvin Johnson are legit.

Malzone got the 4 star bump because Michigan gave him an offer. Without that he would have been a nondescript 3 star.

The rankings are fun to follow, and definitely have some merrit, but it doesn't take a football genius to realize Malzone is just not a power conference level player.

His non-throwing hand had a collision with someone's helmet. I'm sure it was very painful, but I'm also sure that if that had happened during a game and he were our only (or best) QB option, he would have been able to continue. But even if he did somehow break it, not just bruise it, there's plenty of time for that to heal.

He went to the locker room early. An apparent left hand iinjury. No official news yet. All of the QB's have improved under JH. Nice to see! Speight is much closer to J'OK than expected Morris appears to be a distant third Peters looked pretty good for a true Fr Malzone is deep in the pack

Speight looked the best. Morris is most improved and running a close second. O'korn is good, but may have had an off day. He can run. Peters will definately redshirt. Malone will be working through something. As for evaluating the QB play, it sounds like everyone saw what they wanted to see.

When you split the teams like this and have first stringers alongside walk-ons, I think it's a bit tough to actually determine who was the best. What I can say, is that Speight looked the most comfortable. I think what the great thing is, all of the QBs look to have improved tremendously. I honestly don't think I'd be too concerned with whomever starts. I'm more confident in Speight or Morris than I was last year and even towards the end of the season.

Both Speight and O'Korn led TD drives. O'Korn did not have the WR's and faced a very good D. On the hand, Speight looked calm and collected. Still has to wind up to thro, but he was accurate. Morris is NOT close second. He overthrew, threw behind, and still struggles with accuracy and touch.

Other than literally the last 10 minutes of Spring ball, he went through all the preparation/practices.  He now has a few weeks to take a break, get through finals, and get treatment.  I don't think he broke anything.  I believe his had was stepped on and he has swelling.  He'll be ok. Even if he gets put in a cast, he'll/we'll still be alright.

I couldn't help but to cut and paste your picture and send it to some of my suckeye acquantences.  TY!!  I told them that it was JT Barrett's throwing hand.  Let them twist in the wind and research the fallacity of the matter.  Who's got it better than us???  NOBODY!!!

It's not injuries. It's injury. It's spring. He is not our first or second string QB. Some team had to start their fourth string QB at the end of a season once. Oh no.

The top of his hand looked pretty bruised from what I could tell.  But not gonna worry about.  If Malzone is needed this season, there are more problems than a bruised, or even broken, hand to worry about.  Just the thought of Malzone being needed this year brings a shiver to my spine...

It appeared to me he had a broken bone. The trainer immediately covered it with a towel. I noticed it was very round and dark like the bone may have broken the skin. It could have been a very bad contusion but that's just what it looked like.

His hand looked like he had a giant blue bubble that needed to be popped. Kinda gross looking.
