Sad day. Former Michigan QB and brother of former HC and player Bump Elliott passed away today. Pete was the coach at illinois from 1960-1966 and faced his brother Bump at Michigan in the Elliott Bowl yearly.
Pete was an All-American, 2-time National Champion and 2-time Western Conference Champion.

Elliott was the first athlete in Michigan’s history to win 12 letters – four each in football, basketball, and golf. He guided the Wolverines football squad to back-to-back undefeated seasons in 1947 and 1948. He helped Michigan to a dominating 49-0 victory over Southern California in the 1948 Rose Bowl and guided the team to an undisputed national championship the following season... He was awarded the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor for Athletic and Scholastic achievement and earned a degree in history from Michigan.
That's not all; he coached with Bud Wilkinson at Oklahoma, led Illinois to a Rose Bowl win and later served as the Illini Athletic Director. Oh, and his two sons Bruce and Dave both played football for the Maize and Blue.

Thoughts and condolences to the Elliott family in this time. In addition to stints as an assistant at Oklahoma and as head coach at Illinois, the release said he also coached at California and Miami (FL). Definitely a diverse career as a head coach, and all that before his tenure as the executive director of the Pro Football Hall Of Fame. A lifetime of service to the sport indeed.

This probably needs to be said...
...there was a time, when Pete Elliott left Illinois, I think around 1967, that a scandal surrounding a "slush fund" had been exposed. To make a very long story much shorter, the AD at Illinois had retired. And Head Football Coach Pete Elliott was chosen to fill the post. But he had a rival in that Assistant AD Mel Brewer had wanted the job. When Eilliott got the appointment, Brewer resigned and soon after a paper purporting to be a ledger of payments made to players in three different sports including football was handed to the Big Ten Conference office. Not only was there at that time no elaborate set of NCAA rules about the use of booster funds; the issue wasn't even on the NCAA radar. The Conference handled those things. The alleged Illinois slush fund (as I recall, it was mostly a basketball thing) basically amounted to booster money that was usually used to give athletes summer jobs that allowed them to continue to train and practice. "Everybody did it," was the truism that actually applied. MSU and OSU were notorious for it, and Biggie Munn and Woody Hayes had been sanctioned for it, by the Conference. Illinois had been regarded, along with Michigan, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Minnesota, as part of the "clean" group.
Anyway, Pete Elliott was forced to resign under pressure from the other conference schools, with Biggie Munn and MSU pushing the hardest. It was the only hint of a blemish on a sterling career of excellence on and off the field for Pete Elliott. Nobody who really knew Pete Elliott ever knew him as a cheater; and his later career, his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame and his leadership as Executive Directer and Board Member of the Pro Football Hall Fame in Canton all answered the Illinois departure. He was always a class act.
